Shireen knew her own condition well, so she behaved obediently and rarely left her room. Every day she quietly read books in her room or the courtyard, occasionally chatting with the maids.
Hearing Shireen's question, Drogon grinned, revealing two rows of tiny sharp teeth. Flying onto the table, he picked up a pen and wrote:
"We leave tomorrow."
"Really? We can go tomorrow?"The happiness came so suddenly that Shireen could hardly believe it.
Seeing her excitement, Drogon nodded his little head.
Although Shireen had long grown accustomed to staying alone quietly in the house, that didn't mean she disliked liveliness and company.
"Are you going to Slaver's Bay with me?" she asked again.
Actually, she also wanted to ask why Drogon wouldn't simply carry her there by flying, but she figured he must have his reasons, so she held back the question.
Drogon nodded. Of course he would escort Shireen to Slaver's Bay personally; otherwise, he wouldn't feel safe letting her travel alongside Tyrion.
He still remembered how, in the original story, Tyrion and Varys encountered Jorah on the road to Slaver's Bay. Jorah recognized Tyrion and kidnapped him in hopes of earning a pardon.
Then, incredibly, the two of them ran into slave traders and were captured themselves. Tyrion had nearly had his little brother cut off, and only escaped thanks to his quick wit.
"There will also be two others traveling with you. You'll meet them tomorrow," Drogon continued writing.
Hearing that others would accompany them, Shireen vaguely understood why Drogon wasn't flying her there directly. Perhaps those two people were special somehow? she wondered silently.
Drogon stayed with Shireen in the courtyard for most of the day. Before nightfall, he flew out to the grasslands for another feast and also brought back plenty of Dothraki horse meat and blood pies for her.
Pentos was not far from the Dothraki Sea. At Drogon's current speed, a round trip only took about an hour.
Shireen was surprised that Drogon had returned with so much delicious food after being gone such a short time. But since she had eaten too much during the day, she only tasted a little and saved the rest for the journey tomorrow.
The next morning, two carriages stopped outside the courtyard where Shireen was staying. Five guards rode before and behind them. Struggling a bit, Shireen carried her small bundle and books into one of the carriages.
The day before, Drogon had used the secret signals agreed upon with Varys to leave a message for Illyrio Mopatis, the governor of Pentos, asking him to prepare carriages and guards. Now, early this morning, they were ready to depart.
After Shireen climbed into the carriage, it did not immediately leave. A moment later, she heard the gate of the neighboring courtyard open, as if someone had come out.
Carefully lifting the curtain, she saw a man and a woman stepping through the gate—one tall, one short. The woman was beautiful and seductive, while the man was a dwarf with a diagonal scar across his face.
The dwarf glanced toward Shireen's carriage and happened to see her peeking through the curtain. He even smiled at her.
Startled, Shireen quickly withdrew her head, immediately thinking of someone: Tyrion Lannister, the Imp.
She never expected Drogon would have her travel together with him.
But Tyrion's nephew was king, his sister the queen regent, and his father the Hand of the King. Why would he go to Slaver's Bay with her?
As the daughter of Stannis Baratheon, Shireen knew the Lannister family very well.
From the sky, Drogon saw Shae's charming face and couldn't help sighing inwardly. No wonder Tyrion had been so infatuated with her. She really was beautiful—even more alluring than Melisandre.
After Tyrion boarded his carriage, the two wagons finally rolled slowly toward the city gates.
Twenty minutes later, they left Pentos. After traveling a bit farther beyond the city, Drogon flew directly into Shireen's carriage.
The guards outside only saw a black shadow dart into the carriage. Alarmed, they hurriedly knocked on the door to ask if she was alright. After Shireen assured them nothing was wrong, they assumed what they had seen was merely an illusion.
The carriages traveled farther before stopping in an empty clearing.
Tyrion climbed down first, followed by Shae, who wore a thoroughly satisfied smile.
After Varys had knocked Tyrion unconscious and sent him to Pentos, Shae thought she would never see him again. She had witnessed Tyrion's arrest and the venomous hatred in Queen Cersei's eyes.
Shae did not know whether King Joffrey had truly been killed by Tyrion, but she knew one thing for certain: Cersei would never let Tyrion go easily. She would very likely kill him.
Only then did Shae understand why Tyrion had insisted it was dangerous for her to remain in King's Landing. If Cersei discovered her existence, she might very well have her hanged.
She had once believed Tyrion simply no longer wanted her and had sent her to Pentos so he could be with noble Sansa instead.
Only after Joffrey's death did she realize just how terrible the relationship between Tyrion and Cersei truly was—it had already reached the point where they wanted each other dead.
What Shae never expected was that, while she was feeling miserable the previous night, Tyrion had suddenly appeared before her. In that moment, she truly felt like the happiest woman in the world.
When Tyrion told her they would travel to the distant Slaver's Bay, she did not object at all. As long as she could leave King's Landing and stay together with Tyrion, she was willing to go anywhere.
The only thing that puzzled her was that the mysterious person living in the neighboring courtyard was also traveling with them, and Tyrion seemed to have known this already.
Whenever she asked about the companion, Tyrion refused to explain, only saying it was "a woman." After her initial surprise, she realized he obviously didn't mean a woman romantically involved with him, which made her even more curious.
Seeing the carriage stop, Shireen poked her head out the window and climbed down together with Drogon.
The moment Drogon appeared, Tyrion, Shae, the drivers, and the guards all saw him.
The drivers and guards were stunned. They struggled desperately to calm the restless horses, preventing them from bolting in terror at Drogon's sudden appearance.
Tyrion and Shae stared wide-eyed at Drogon, who hovered in the air with crimson wings gently beating.
Tyrion handled it better—Varys had already told him about Drogon.
But Shae had never seen a real dragon before, nor had she heard that dragons, extinct for more than a century, had returned to the world. Even though Drogon was still small, she inexplicably felt a faint but terrifying pressure coming from him.
Seeing Tyrion looking at him, Drogon grinned slightly in greeting. This was Tyrion's first time seeing Drogon, but Drogon had already seen Tyrion at Joffrey's wedding feast.
"Hello, I'm Shireen Baratheon, and this is Drogon."
Seeing that Drogon had voluntarily emerged from the carriage while Tyrion clearly had never met him before, Shireen introduced them herself.
Only then did Tyrion pull his gaze away from Drogon.
Shae had been so captivated by Drogon that she hadn't paid much attention to Shireen. Hearing the introduction, she finally noticed the remnants of greyscale scars on the girl's face and realized she shared the same surname as the current king.
She looked at Tyrion in shock, silently asking about Shireen's identity.
"Hello, Shireen. I'm Tyrion Lannister, and this is Shae," Tyrion introduced himself. Then he quietly added to Shae:
"She's King Robert's niece—the daughter of Lord Stannis."
