The silence between them wasn't empty anymore.
It was heavy.
Filled with questions Ava wasn't sure she wanted answers to.
They had been walking for what felt like hours. The city lights had faded behind them, replaced by quieter streets and darker corners. Still, he didn't let go of her hand.
Not once.
"Are you going to keep dragging me around all night?" Ava finally asked, her voice tired but sharp.
He didn't slow down.
"Until it's safe."
"And when will that be?"
A pause.
Then—
"When they stop looking for you."
Ava stopped walking.
This time, she pulled her hand away.
"For me?" she asked, disbelief creeping into her voice. "You mean you, right? They're after you."
He turned to face her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he said quietly—
"They saw you with me."
That was enough.
Ava felt her stomach drop.
"So now I'm a target," she whispered.
"Yes."
The word hit harder than anything else.
No hesitation. No comfort.
Just truth.
Ava ran a hand through her hair, trying to think straight.
"This is insane," she muttered. "I don't even know your name."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
As if the question itself carried weight.
Then, slowly—
"Rayan."
The name felt strange on her lips.
Like something dangerous disguised as something simple.
"Ava," she replied.
He nodded once.
"I know."
Her brows furrowed. "How?"
He didn't answer.
And somehow—
That answer was worse than any truth.
They moved again, slower now.
More cautious.
Ava couldn't stop stealing glances at him.
Rayan.
Even his name felt like a secret.
"Who are they?" she asked after a while.
"People you don't want to meet."
"Too late for that."
A faint smirk touched his lips.
"You're learning."
They reached an old, nearly abandoned building. Broken windows. Rusted doors. The kind of place no one looked at twice.
"Inside," Rayan said.
Ava hesitated.
"You expect me to trust you?"
He looked at her—calm, unreadable.
"No."
"Then why would I go in there?"
He stepped closer.
Not threatening.
Not forceful.
Just… certain.
"Because outside," he said quietly, "you have no chance."
That was the thing about him.
He didn't try to convince her.
He didn't promise safety.
He just told the truth—
And somehow, that made it harder to walk away.
Ava sighed and stepped inside.
The air was cold. Dust filled the space. Every sound echoed louder than it should.
Rayan closed the door behind them.
Locked it.
Then finally—
He relaxed.
Just a little.
"You can rest here," he said.
Ava leaned against the wall, her body finally catching up with everything that had happened.
"You act like this is normal," she said.
"For me, it is."
That answer stayed in the air.
Heavy.
Ava studied him for a moment.
"You're not just some random guy running from trouble," she said slowly. "You are the trouble."
Rayan didn't deny it.
Didn't argue.
He just looked at her—
And said something that made her heart skip—
"I told you already."
Ava swallowed.
"Told me what?"
He stepped closer, his voice low and steady.
"Loving me… would be dangerous."
Her breath caught.
"I never said I loved you."
Another faint smile.
"No," he said. "But you didn't run either."
And that—
That scared her more than anything else.
Outside, the wind howled softly.
Inside, the silence grew deeper.
But this time—
It wasn't just fear that filled the space.
It was something else.
Something reckless.
Something neither of them could stop anymore.
