Chapter 6 - A Memory That Wasn’t His

Riven didn't run.

That was the first thing that changed.

The creature was still there—just beyond the trees, its shape barely visible in the broken light. Waiting. Watching. Measuring him the same way he had started measuring the world around him.

His instincts screamed at him to move.

To get away.

To survive.

But something else held him in place.

Something quieter.

Colder.

"…Observer."

The word came out slowly this time.

Not confused.

Not questioning.

Testing.

The air didn't respond.

The world didn't shift.

But something inside him did.

Riven adjusted his stance, lowering his center slightly, his breathing slowing again—not calm, not relaxed, but controlled.

If running didn't work before…

Then maybe—

Understanding would.

The creature moved.

Just a little.

Enough to confirm one thing.

It wasn't rushing him.

That meant it didn't need to.

Riven's jaw tightened.

"…So I'm already prey."

The thought didn't scare him as much as it should have.

That alone felt wrong.

Then—

The world flickered.

Not outside.

Inside.

His vision blurred for a split second, like something had passed through his mind instead of his eyes.

And suddenly—

He wasn't in the forest anymore.

The ground beneath him felt different.

Hard.

Flat.

Artificial.

The air was clearer, sharper—filled with distant sounds that didn't belong to nature. Metallic echoes. Rapid movement. Energy.

Riven blinked.

And the world changed completely.

A vast landscape stretched out before him—open terrain, broken ruins, scattered structures that looked both ancient and designed. The sky wasn't natural either. Too clean. Too perfect.

"…What is this…?"

He wasn't alone.

A figure stood ahead of him.

Not still.

Moving.

Fast.

Too fast.

The man dashed across the terrain like he wasn't bound by weight, weaving through obstacles, dodging attacks that Riven couldn't even fully see.

Because there were enemies.

Monsters.

Multiple.

Large, aggressive, unpredictable.

And yet—

He wasn't overwhelmed.

He was playing.

That was the only word that fit.

Every movement was precise but reckless. Calculated but chaotic. Like he was enjoying it more than he should.

Riven felt it instantly.

This wasn't survival.

This was mastery.

The man leaped forward, spinning mid-air, striking one of the creatures cleanly before landing and immediately shifting direction again. No hesitation. No wasted movement.

A grin flashed across his face.

Wild.

Excited.

Alive.

"…He's insane."

The words slipped out without thinking.

The figure paused for just a fraction of a second.

Then—

Turned.

Riven froze.

For a moment, it felt like their eyes met.

Which shouldn't have been possible.

This wasn't real.

This wasn't happening.

And yet—

"…You're watching?"

The voice came through clearly.

Sharp.

Curious.

Not surprised.

Riven's chest tightened.

"…What?"

The man tilted his head slightly, still smiling.

"…Huh. That's new."

And just like that—

Riven knew.

Not by name.

Not by memory.

But by feeling.

Recognition.

The kind that didn't need explanation.

"…Sunraku…"

The name surfaced naturally.

The man—Sunraku—let out a small laugh.

"…No idea what that means, but sure."

Behind him, one of the monsters lunged forward suddenly.

Fast.

Violent.

Deadly.

Riven's instincts reacted immediately.

"Behind—!"

But the warning wasn't needed.

Sunraku moved before the attack even fully formed.

A quick step.

A shift.

A strike.

Clean.

Efficient.

Effortless.

The creature collapsed.

Gone.

Like it had never stood a chance.

Sunraku stretched slightly, rolling his shoulder like the fight had barely mattered.

Then he looked back at Riven again.

"…You're not supposed to be here, are you?"

Riven stayed silent.

Because he didn't have an answer.

"…Yeah. Thought so."

Sunraku crouched slightly, resting his arm on his knee, still watching him with that same sharp, amused expression.

"But you're interesting."

That word hit differently.

Interesting.

Not weak.

Not lost.

Not prey.

Riven frowned slightly.

"…This isn't real."

Sunraku's grin widened.

"…Depends."

"On what?"

"…On whether you learn anything from it."

Riven didn't respond immediately.

Because something about that—

Felt important.

Too important to ignore.

"…Then what am I supposed to learn?"

For a moment, Sunraku didn't answer.

Then—

He stood up straight.

The energy around him shifted slightly.

Still chaotic.

Still wild.

But sharper now.

More focused.

"You're thinking too much."

Riven blinked.

"…What?"

"You're trying to figure out the rules before you even know how to move."

Sunraku tapped his own head lightly.

"That'll get you killed faster than anything."

Riven's jaw tightened slightly.

"…Then what?"

Sunraku pointed forward.

Not at him.

Past him.

"At the thing that's trying to kill you."

Riven felt it again.

That presence.

That pressure.

Even here—

It was bleeding through.

"…Face it."

The words were simple.

Direct.

Familiar.

"…You don't need to understand everything."

Sunraku's grin returned.

"…You just need to not die."

The world flickered again.

Stronger this time.

Breaking.

Shattering.

Riven felt the ground disappear beneath him—

And he was back.

The forest.

The darkness.

The creature.

Closer now.

Real.

Watching him.

His breathing hitched for half a second—

Then steadied.

"…Don't think too much."

He whispered it to himself.

Not as doubt.

As a reminder.

His stance shifted again.

Lower.

Sharper.

His eyes didn't wander this time.

They locked.

Directly onto the creature.

"…Just don't die."

The creature moved.

So did he.

And this time—

Riven didn't run. 🔥
