Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Rejection

The Selection Arena stretched wider than Kael Riven had ever seen, a colossal expanse of polished stone that reflected the golden afternoon sun like a lake of molten light. The crowd was a living, buzzing organism—thousands of voices, cheers, whispers, and laughter interweaving into a deafening hum. He had dreamed of this day, of standing among the chosen, of proving himself. But as he looked around, the whispers carried not hope, but doubt.

Kael felt the weight of every eye on him, not of respect, but of expectation. Expectations he had no power to meet. Every selected candidate radiated energy as their abilities ignited, bursts of light marking them as the world's next heroes. Some leapt forward, glowing with strength, their names etched into the public record by the ceremonial announcer, their families' pride shining brighter than the arena's chandeliers.

One by one, they were called. Kael watched friends, allies, even those he thought weaker than himself, ascend. His stomach twisted. The cheers made him shrink into the shadows, feeling smaller, less than he had ever known himself to be.

Finally, the moment came. The announcer's voice boomed:

"Riven, Kael—compatibility check initiated."

Kael's heart pounded, a thunderous echo in his ears. He felt the eyes of the world pierce him, judging him, expecting something… anything.

Then, silence.

A soft, almost imperceptible beep.

No compatibility detected.

The words hung in the air like poison. Laughter rippled through the stands, hushed at first, then louder, sharper. Friends averted their eyes. Family faces tightened with disappointment. Even his minor rival, a boy who had smirked at him in the corridors, now looked openly smug.

Kael swallowed, the taste of bile sharp in his mouth. His legs felt like lead. His hands shook—not with fear, but with disbelief. This… this can't be real.

The Selection was supposed to recognize potential. He had trained, endured, hoped. Yet here he was, standing as a failure for all to see. The arena felt suddenly enormous, suffocating, every cheer for the others another dagger against his ribs.

He left without a word, stepping through the archway into the quiet of the corridors behind the arena. The crowd's laughter faded into murmurs, but he still felt it clawing at his skin. A minor official called after him, voice dripping with pity:

"Better luck next year, Riven."

Kael didn't respond. Words had abandoned him. All he felt was the weight of emptiness.

Night fell, draping the city in a blanket of shadows. Kael returned to his small apartment, a room bare but for a bed, a desk, and the memory of humiliation that clung to every corner. He sat on the edge of the bed, staring at his hands, remembering the faces, the sneers, the whispered disbelief.

Then, a faint glow appeared on the wall. At first, he thought it was a reflection of the streetlights. But the light pulsed, soft, deliberate, like a heartbeat. Words formed in midair, letters that shimmered faintly:

[SYSTEM ACTIVATED]If the world refuses to define you… I will.

Kael's breath caught. His mind raced, half expecting someone to be playing a cruel prank. But there was no one. The room remained silent except for the faint hum of the glow.

A choice appeared, hovering like a shard of light before him:

Suppress fear response → Gain clarity under pressure Detach from shame → Mental focus, efficiency increased

He stared, frozen. It was impossible. A system? For him? Why him?

But deep down, something stirred. Not hope. Not joy. Something colder. A spark of… possibility.

Kael reached out, hesitated, then selected the first option: Suppress fear response.

The light enveloped him briefly, not painful, not soothing—just… transformative. He felt tension drain from his shoulders. The lingering weight of humiliation was still there, but now it was distant, manageable.

For the first time since the Selection, Kael allowed himself to breathe.

But even in relief, a shadow of unease clung to him. What have I just done?

The screen flickered one last time before vanishing. Silence returned. Yet it was different now, heavier, pregnant with possibility. Kael felt the shift deep inside him. The first choice had been made, and the consequences, however subtle now, had begun.
