Chapter 6 - Shadow in the Guild and the Path to the Dungeon

Kai left the cheap inn as the three morning suns climbed higher over Valoria. The streets were already alive with merchants setting up stalls, guards patrolling with fresh wanted posters bearing his face, and adventurers rushing toward the central market. He moved calmly through the crowd, hands in his pockets, mind still replaying the events of the previous night.

The system had warned him clearly: the world would push back harder the more he changed fate. That meant he needed to stay hidden longer, strike smarter, and never remain in one place too long.

He stopped at a small back-alley stall run by a shady dwarf and bought a full set of dark assassin leathers. The outfit was matte black with subtle purple threading that resembled faint fate lines when light hit it just right. The hood was deep and wide, designed to swallow the wearer's face unless they chose to be seen. He changed in a narrow alley, pulling the hood low until only the faint glow of his purple eyes was visible in the shadows.

Now he looked exactly like what he had become. A shadow. A reaper. Someone who existed only when he decided to.

Satisfied, he made his way toward the Iron Fang Mercenary Guild. As he walked through the busiest part of the market, he passed groups of bounty hunters openly discussing the World Announcement and the million-gold reward on his head. With Silent Thread Reaper active, he moved right beside two of them. Neither even glanced his way. The skill worked flawlessly.

He deactivated the ability just before pushing open the heavy doors of the guild hall. The place was packed with rough mercenaries. Some sharpened blades at long wooden tables, others studied quest boards covered in high-risk requests. The smell of ale, sweat, and steel filled the air.

A scarred woman behind the main counter looked up as he approached, eyes narrowing at the hooded figure.

New blood, she grunted. Most people who walk in wearing a hood like that are either hiding from something or planning to cause trouble. Name?

Kai Ren, he answered calmly, voice steady and low. Looking for steady work. The kind that pays well and keeps me off main roads.

The woman studied him for a long moment. You don't look like a beginner, but you also don't look like someone who wants attention. Skills?

I'm very good at not being seen, Kai said simply. Good at making problems disappear without anyone noticing. I work alone and I don't ask questions.

She slid a registration form across the counter. Sign it. First job is always a test. There's a caravan leaving for the outer ruins in two hours. Bandit activity has been high. Escort duty. Low pay, but if you survive you get full membership and better contracts.

Kai signed without hesitation.

As he turned toward the quest board, a familiar fiery voice cut through the noise from the back of the hall.

You have got to be kidding me.

Lyra Voss stood near the weapon racks, dual axes strapped to her back, wearing tight mercenary leathers that hugged every curve of her athletic body. Her crimson ponytail swayed as she stormed over, eyes blazing with a mix of shock, irritation, and instant heat.

She grabbed him by the front of his new black leather jacket and dragged him into a quieter corner near the back wall. Their bodies pressed close again. The heat between them rose instantly, just like the night before in her hidden room.

You, she hissed, voice low and rough. After everything that happened last night you just stroll into the guild dressed like some edgy assassin and sign up for work like nothing happened? The entire continent is looking for you and you're here playing mercenary?

Kai's hands settled naturally on her waist, fingers digging into the leather. His hooded face stayed shadowed, but his purple eyes locked onto hers with calm intensity.

Missed me already, Lioness? he murmured, pulling her hips against him.

Lyra's breath hitched. Her strong hands tightened on his jacket, but she didn't push him away. Her thighs brushed against his and the sexual tension crackled between them like fire.

I should turn you in right now, she growled. I should collect that million gold and be done with your arrogant face. But instead I'm standing here remembering how you felt against me in my room last night… and hating how much I want to pin you down again.

Kai leaned in closer, his hooded face almost touching hers. Then stop pretending you want to kill me. We both know you want something very different right now.

Lyra shivered, eyes darkening with desire. For a second it looked like she might kiss him right there in the middle of the guild hall.

Instead she shoved him back hard, face flushed. Shut up. I'm taking the same caravan job. Try not to die before we even leave the city, idiot. And if anyone asks, I don't know you.

She turned and walked away, but not before shooting him one last glare full of fire, hate, and barely hidden longing.

Kai watched her go with a small smirk, then returned to the counter.

The scarred woman had been watching the entire exchange. She raised an eyebrow. You know Voss? That girl is trouble.

She's useful, Kai answered calmly.

The woman chuckled. Fair enough. Before you get the caravan job we need to test you. Guild rule. We don't send unproven meat into real danger. Follow me.

She led him through a side door into a large indoor training arena. Four experienced mercenaries were already waiting: a tall orc warrior, a female ranger with a longbow, a mage in dark robes, and a burly shield-bearer.

Simple test, the woman explained. You stand in the middle of the arena. The four of them will try to find you or hit you with basic attacks. If you can stay undetected for five full minutes, you pass. No killing, no serious injury. Just prove your skill.

Kai nodded and walked to the center. He pulled his hood lower until his face was completely hidden in shadow.

The test began.

The orc charged first, swinging a massive axe. Kai activated Silent Thread Reaper the instant the fight started. His body dissolved into faint purple-black threads. He simply stepped sideways. The axe whistled through empty air. The orc blinked in confusion.

Where did he go?

The ranger fired three arrows in quick succession. All of them missed by centimeters even though Kai stood right in front of her. She lowered her bow, eyes wide.

He's right there. I can feel him but I can't see him.

The mage cast a wide detection spell. Purple light washed over the arena. It should have revealed everything. Instead the light passed straight through Kai as if he weren't there at all.

The shield-bearer swung a heavy fist. Kai remained perfectly still, standing less than a meter away. The punch sailed past his hooded head.

The four mercenaries stopped attacking. They stared at the seemingly empty center of the arena in open shock.

He's standing right in front of us, the orc muttered. I can smell the leather but I can't see the bastard.

The ranger shook her head. This isn't normal stealth. This is something else. He's literally invisible while standing in plain sight.

The mage's hands trembled slightly. I've never seen a skill erase presence this cleanly. Not even high-level assassins can do this without artifacts.

The guild woman watching from the side looked genuinely impressed. Enough. Test passed. With flying colors.

Kai deactivated the skill. He reappeared exactly where he had been standing the whole time, hood still low, calm as ever.

The four testers stared at him in stunned silence. The orc actually took a step back.

You were right there the entire time, the ranger whispered. And none of us could see you.

Kai simply nodded. That's the point.

The guild woman clapped once. Welcome to the Iron Fang. You're cleared for the caravan escort. But the real test comes tomorrow. There's a newly discovered dungeon near the outer ruins. High risk, high reward. The caravan is heading there first. If you want real money and real reputation, that's where you prove yourself.

Kai's eyes gleamed under the hood.

A dungeon.

Perfect.

He glanced toward the door where Lyra had disappeared earlier, remembering how her body had pressed against his in the hidden room the night before. When Elara had stood less than a meter away searching frantically, he had been right there in the corner, completely invisible. The memory sent a thrill through him. Lyra had been so close to panicking, ready to fight to protect him, and yet he had stayed perfectly hidden the whole time.

Now he would test the same skill in a real dungeon.

The game was accelerating.

And he was more than ready.
