Chapter 11 - Chapter11: The Emperor's summons

The messenger came at dawn.

Cassian was still in the vault. Still sitting against the crystal wall. Kaelen's head on his shoulder. The cloak wrapped around them both.

He heard the footsteps. Heavy. Armored.

Not a spy. A soldier.

The Emperor knows.

Cassian gently moved Kaelen's head. Laid him on the folded cloak. Stood.

The vault door dissolved.

A soldier stood there. Gold armor. Red plume. The Emperor's personal guard.

"Lord Cassian Vale. You are summoned to court. Immediately."

Cassian stepped through the door. Let it re-form behind him.

"Why?"

The soldier's face was blank. "The Emperor did not share his reasons."

Cassian looked back at the stone. He could feel Kaelen through the thread. Waking. Confused.

Stay there, he sent. Do not move.

The thread pulled back. Soft. Worried.

Cassian followed the soldier up the stairs.

---

The throne room was cold.

Black marble. High ceilings. Fires that gave no warmth. The Emperor sat on his throne of bone and iron.

His eyes were black holes.

Cassian knelt at the foot of the throne. Head down. Hands open. The position of loyalty.

"My lord."

"Rise, Cassian."

Cassian stood.

The Emperor smiled. It did not reach his eyes.

"I hear you have been spending much time in the vault."

Cassian's jaw tightened. "The Enigma requires supervision."

"The Enigma requires healing. And you require healing. A convenient arrangement." The Emperor leaned forward. "How goes the bond?"

Cassian did not flinch.

"There is no bond. Just healing."

The Emperor's smile widened.

"Liar. I have dream-walkers. I have spies. I know about the soulwound. I know about the thread. I know you held his hand while he slept."

Cassian's blood went cold.

He knows everything.

"The bond is unintentional," Cassian said. "It is a side effect of the resonance. Nothing more."

"Nothing more." The Emperor stood. Walked down the steps. Each footfall echoed. "You expect me to believe that? The Silent Reaper, who has not touched another living being in years, sits in a crystal prison holding hands with an Enigma. And it means nothing?"

Cassian said nothing.

The Emperor stopped inches from his face.

"I have a suggestion," the Emperor said. Soft. Dangerous. "Bring the Enigma to the capital. I have better facilities here. Better mages. He can heal you more efficiently. And I can monitor the bond. For safety, of course."

Cassian's hands clenched.

"No."

The Emperor's smile vanished.

"No?"

"The Enigma is too weak to move. The crystal prison is his life support. Moving him would kill him."

"Then we move the crystal."

"The crystal is rooted to the vault. It has grown into the stone. Cutting it would shatter it."

The Emperor's black eyes narrowed.

"You are making excuses."

"I am stating facts."

"You are refusing me."

Cassian met his gaze.

"Yes."

Silence.

The fires hissed. The shadows danced. The Emperor's face went very still.

"Do you know what happens to those who refuse me, Cassian?"

"I have killed them for you. Many times."

"Then you know their fate." The Emperor turned. Walked back to his throne. Sat down. "I am being generous. I am offering you a place in the capital. Warm rooms. Good food. A chance to serve your Emperor more closely."

"And the Enigma?"

"The Enigma serves his Emperor. That is what he was made for."

Cassian's wolf stirred.

No one touches ours.

"The Enigma is not a weapon," Cassian said.

The Emperor laughed. Cold. Sharp.

"Everything is a weapon, Cassian. You. Me. The Enigma. The difference is, some of us know how to aim."

Cassian said nothing.

The Emperor waved a hand.

"You are dismissed. Think about my offer. I expect your answer in three days."

Cassian turned. Walked to the doors.

"And Cassian?"

He stopped.

"The next time you refuse me, I will not ask nicely. I will take the Enigma by force. And I will make you watch."

Cassian walked out.

His hands were shaking.

The wolf was snarling.

We kill him, the wolf growled. We kill him now.

Not yet, Cassian answered. Not yet.

He walked down the hall. Down the stairs. Past the soldiers. Past the iron door.

The vault waited.

And inside it, Kaelen.

---

Kaelen felt Cassian coming before he saw him.

The thread was tight. Angry. Pulsing with rage and fear and something else.

Danger.

Kaelen stood. Pressed his palms to the crystal.

The prison hummed a warning.

The Emperor, Kaelen thought. He did something.

The vault door dissolved.

Cassian stepped through. His face was pale. His silver eyes were bright. His hands were fists at his sides.

"What happened?" Kaelen asked.

Cassian stopped in the center of the room.

"The Emperor summoned me. He wants you moved to the capital. He wants to monitor the bond."

Kaelen's blood went cold.

"And you said?"

"I refused."

Kaelen stepped closer. "Cassian. He will not let that stand."

"I know."

"He will come for me. With soldiers. With mages. With the dream-walker."

Cassian's jaw tightened. "I know."

"Then why did you refuse?"

Cassian looked at him. Silver eyes burning.

"Because if he takes you to the capital, I will never see you again. He will lock you in a deeper prison. He will force the bond. He will trigger the Reverberation. And you will forget everything. Including your own name."

Kaelen's chest ached.

"So you chose to make an enemy of the most powerful man in the world. For me."

"Yes."

"You are a fool."

"I know."

Cassian reached out. Took Kaelen's hand.

"But I would rather die a fool than live knowing I gave you to him."

The thread pulled.

The soulwound burned.

Kaelen squeezed his hand.

"Then we need a plan."

"A plan for what?"

"To survive. To escape. To find a way out of this before he comes for us."

Cassian shook his head. "There is no escape. The vault is sealed. The capital is surrounded by armies. The Emperor has dream-walkers who can find anyone anywhere."

Kaelen's eyes went distant.

"The previous Enigma. The one before me. She wrote about a way out. A tunnel. Beneath the vault. It leads to the river."

Cassian's breath caught.

"You remember?"

"No. I read it in her diary. Before I forgot. But I remember reading it. The words are still here." He touched his temple. "The tunnel exists. She used it. But the Emperor sealed it after she died."

"Can it be unsealed?"

Kaelen closed his eyes. Reached into the smoke of his memories.

"Maybe. There is a key. A resonance key. Only an Enigma can open it."

Cassian's grip tightened.

"Then we have three days. Before the Emperor's deadline."

Kaelen opened his eyes.

"Three days to find a tunnel that might not exist. To open a seal that might be unbreakable. To escape an army that surrounds us."

"Yes."

Kaelen smiled. Small. Fierce.

"I have survived worse."

Cassian pulled him closer. Not a hug. Just holding. Forehead to forehead. Breathing the same air.

"We will do this together," Cassian said. "Or not at all."

"Together," Kaelen agreed.

The thread hummed between them.

The crystal pulsed.

And somewhere above, the Emperor's dream-walker opened his eyes.

They are planning something, the dream-walker whispered to his master.

Let them plan, the Emperor replied. Hope makes the fall more painful.

---

That night, Cassian did not leave.

He sat with Kaelen on the crystal floor. They did not heal. Did not touch beyond holding hands.

They planned.

"There is a crack in the wall," Cassian said. "Small. But growing. The crystal is weakening."

Kaelen looked at the crack. A thin line of darkness in the blue.

"The prison is dying," Kaelen said. "Or waking up. I do not know which."

"If it dies, you die with it."

"Then we must escape before that happens."

Cassian nodded.

"The tunnel. Where does it begin?"

Kaelen closed his eyes. Reached into the smoke.

"Under the crystal. Beneath the floor. There is a stone that does not hum. The previous Enigma marked it."

Cassian looked at the floor. Blue crystal. Endless. Impossible.

"How do we find it?"

Kaelen opened his eyes.

"We listen."

He pressed his palm to the floor. The crystal hummed. Loud. Then softer. Then loud again.

And then—

A silence.

A spot where the hum stopped.

"There," Kaelen said. "There is the stone."

Cassian knelt beside him. Touched the spot. Cold. Not warm like the rest.

"It is real."

"Yes."

Cassian looked at Kaelen.

"Three days. We need tools. Rope. Food. Weapons."

"I cannot leave the vault."

"But I can." Cassian stood. "I will bring what we need. Tomorrow. Tonight, we rest."

Kaelen looked up at him.

"You will come back?"

Cassian knelt. Took Kaelen's face in his hands.

"I will always come back."

He kissed Kaelen's forehead. Soft. Brief.

Then stood. Walked to the door.

The vault dissolved.

Cassian stepped through.

The stone re-formed behind him.

Kaelen touched his forehead where Cassian's lips had been.

The thread pulled.

Warm.

He will come back, Kaelen thought. He promised.

And for the first time in years, Kaelen believed someone.
