Chapter 13 - perfect happy family

Act I: The Warmth of the TrapThe golden morning sun floods the courtyard of Gracefield Sanctuary, dissolving the dark shadows of the night. The sound of children laughing echoes across the perfectly manicured grass. Fifteen-year-old Yurto is sitting at a wooden picnic table, teaching a group of wide-eyed nine-year-olds how to play chess. Nearby, Zora is suspended in the air, his legs morphed into strong, biological vine-like swings that three toddlers are joyfully riding.Yurto: Moving a knight with a soft smile. Checkmate, Leo. You're getting faster, but you need to watch your flanks.Zora: Laughing boisterously as he gently lowers the toddlers. Alright, alright, recess is over, little monsters! Go wash up for lunch before Mom catches us tracking mud onto the porch!Yurto (Internal Monologue): I don't know why I had that weird nightmare yesterday. Looking at this courtyard, listening to the birds... this is reality. We are safe. We are a family.Asher stands near the kitchen garden, holding a basket of freshly picked tomatoes. He looks down at his hands, his fingers twitching slightly.Asher (Internal Monologue): I heard something last night. A voice through a door. A name... Hiria. It sparked a terrifying fire in my chest. A feeling that I was broken, that someone I loved was screaming in the dark. But as the sun came up, the feeling washed away, leaving only the foggy, heavy static of the memory-wipe serum. Even if something is off... even if this house is a beautiful cage... does it actually matter? My throat is broken. I can't speak. The children here love me. Mother treats me with kindness. If there was a past life before this place, it's dead and gone. This peace is real enough for me.Act II: Mother's Gentle ShadowNice Mom (Cecelia): Walking into the courtyard, her white apron fluttering in the breeze as she carries a tray of cold lemonade. Asher, my sweet boy. You've been working so hard in the garden. Come, take a break.Asher turns, offering a soft, serene smile. He quickly moves his fingers in fluid, practiced motions. [Thank you, Mother. The tomatoes are perfectly ripe today.]Cecelia: Setting the tray down, her fingers moving in flawless, gentle response. [You have a magical touch, Asher. The garden thrives because of your pure heart.]She reaches up, gently brushing a stray silver feather from his grand angel wings, her touch warm and fiercely maternal. Asher closes his eyes, leaning into the touch. The static in his brain grows heavier, completely numbing the lingering dread from the night before. If she is a monster, why does her hand feel so warm? He decides to let the doubts go. It simply isn't worth the pain.Zora: Sliding over to the table, snagging a glass of lemonade and winking at Cecelia. Mom, you're a lifesaver. Honestly, if the noble ladies who adopt us from this place don't have your class, I'm running right back home to you.Cecelia: Laughing merrily, a sound like silver bells. Oh, Zora. I'm sure whoever adopts you will be completely charmed by your unique... talents.Act III: The Sibling BondThat afternoon, the sky turns a beautiful, bruised shade of twilight. Yurto organizes the standard evening game of hide-and-seek across the entire forested boundary of the estate. It's a tradition the older brothers take very seriously.Yurto: Adjusting a stopwatch, his tactical mind humming with pleasant, low-stakes energy. Alright, siblings! You have five minutes to hide in the western woods. Zora, Asher, and I are the seekers. If we catch you, you have to help peel potatoes for dinner! Go!The children scatter into the trees, giggling and screaming with excitement.Asher flies gracefully above the canopy, his massive white wings catching the fading sunlight. He looks down at his brothers sprinting through the brush below. Zora playfully uses a tiny biological radar-dish that grows out of his wrist to "ping" the locations of the hidden children, laughing maniacally when he finds three of them crammed behind a single bush.Zora: Shouting. Found you! Team Potato Duty grows stronger!Asher: Landing softly beside Yurto on a mossy ridge, signing with a peaceful expression. [They are hiding well today. It takes them longer to freeze under the pressure.]Yurto: Smiling, checking his watch. They are learning. It's a good life, Asher. I used to feel like I had to carry a heavy burden... like I was responsible for an impossible strategy. But here? The only strategy is making sure the kids have fun.Act IV: The Sleeping VolcanoAs night falls, the family gathers around the grand hearth in the parlor. Cecelia sits in a rocking chair, knitting a sweater, while the younger children doze off on the thick rug. Zora is asleep on the sofa, a toddler resting on his chest, his organic arm completely retracted into normal human skin.Yurto sits on the floor, leaning his head against Asher's shoulder as Asher gently strokes his hair with a white-feathered wing. It is the picture-perfect image of a happy, domestic family. The horrific truth—the betrayal of their father, the captivity of their mother Eleanor, and the brutal torment of Hiria in the Abyssal Pit—is buried deep beneath layers of magic and forced bliss.Asher looks into the crackling orange flames of the fireplace. For a brief second, the fire sparks, casting a jagged shadow against the wall that looks vaguely like a pair of flaming swords.Asher blinks. The image is gone. He lets out a silent, raspy sigh through his damaged throat, closing his eyes and letting the comforting warmth of the parlor consume him. He doesn't remember. He doesn't want to try to escape. He believes, in his heart, that this happy family life is all that matters. But far away, beneath the frozen crust of the earth, the first cracks are beginning to form in the Abyssal Pit, as a tortured monster with his face begins to count the days until vengeance.[To Be Continued...]
