Chapter 56 - Feeling Sad

Didi had the textbook open at the correct page, though she had not read a word of it since the lecture began.

At the front of the room the instructor was drawing mana circulation diagrams across the blackboard while the rest of the class copied them down.

Circulation was one of her weaker subjects, so she should have been the first person there writing anything at all.

'His exam falls somewhere in these next few days,' she thought, tapping one finger against the spine of the book, 'so he could be at the guild this very hour.'

She pictured him going in through those double doors with his hands in his pockets, walking into a life-altering examination the way other men walk into a tavern.

'He will pass,' she thought, with more confidence than the evidence had earned, 'he carried me out of a forest past the thing that killed Sir Gazel and an entire squad of royal knights.'

The confidence lasted until her mind arrived at the banquet.
