Chapter 80 - The first thing to ever hurt the watcher

The connection landed.

And the universe broke.

Nancy gasped as emotions not her own slammed into her mind hard enough to nearly tear her apart.

Fear.

Not ordinary fear.

Ancient fear.

The kind born from watching entire realities die screaming.

The Veil's memories flooded through her—

worlds consumed by the Watcher.

Civilizations erased before they could even understand what hunted them.

Stars collapsing into silence.

And beneath all of it—

one unbearable truth.

The Veil had never wanted to destroy worlds.

It had been trying to survive.

Nancy staggered violently.

Kai caught her before she could fall.

"Nancy!"

Her eyes were wide with horror.

"It's running," she whispered.

The First Alpha stared at her sharply.

What did you do?

"I connected to it."

Several wolves looked horrified.

Leo blinked.

"You connected to the cosmic nightmare?"

"Apparently," Nancy said weakly.

The Veil itself had gone silent now.

Not attacking.

Not screaming.

Because for the first time since its existence began—

something understood it.

The Watcher hated that instantly.

The pressure from the fracture intensified hard enough to split the earth apart again.

ITS PURPOSE IS CONSUMPTION.

Nancy looked up at the massive eye.

"And yours is what?" she shouted back.

"Ending everything that's different from you?"

The forest shook violently.

The Watcher moved again.

A second claw emerged from the fracture.

Reality tore open around it like paper.

Nyra's voice became urgent.

Nancy, it's angry.

"Good."

The Watcher's gaze sharpened.

YOU DEFEND A PARASITE.

Nancy's chest tightened as the Veil's emotions echoed through her again.

Not evil.

Hungry.

Terrified.

Alone.

Like an animal trapped in endless darkness.

"No," Nancy said quietly.

"I defend choice."

The silver-gold bond ignited across the clearing again—

but now something had changed.

The connection no longer linked just the wolves.

It touched the Veil too.

And the impossible happened.

The Veil creatures stopped attacking.

All across the forest, shadow creatures froze mid-motion, confusion rippling through them.

Because the fear controlling them had weakened.

The Watcher noticed immediately.

Its voice darkened.

YOU TAINT THE NATURAL ORDER.

Nancy almost laughed despite the terror.

"Your natural order sucks."

Kai made a noise that might've been a laugh if he wasn't actively dying.

The corruption inside him suddenly slowed.

Nancy felt why instantly.

The Watcher's hold on him was weakening.

Not because it lost power.

Because the Veil was resisting now too.

The Watcher looked at the darkness inside the fracture.

The Veil trembled violently—

then did something no one expected.

It moved between the Watcher and the world.

The entire clearing went silent.

Leo stared upward in disbelief.

"…Did the apocalypse monster just protect us?"

The First Alpha looked equally stunned.

Impossible.

But it was happening.

The Veil's massive form spread through the fracture like living darkness, blocking the Watcher from fully entering reality.

Not out of kindness.

Out of defiance.

The Watcher became still.

And somehow—

that stillness felt worse than rage.

YOU WOULD BETRAY ME FOR THEM?

The Veil answered with raw emotion instead of words this time.

Fear.

Pain.

Exhaustion.

And now—

something new.

Hope.

Tiny.

Fragile.

But real.

Nancy felt tears sting her eyes unexpectedly.

The Watcher noticed that too.

Its gaze slowly lowered toward her again.

Everything became cold.

YOU CHANGED IT.

Nancy swallowed hard but stood her ground anyway.

"Maybe it wanted to change."

The eye narrowed.

Then—

for the first time—

the Watcher entered the clearing completely.

Not physically.

Something worse.

Its presence.

The world dimmed instantly.

Sound disappeared.

The bond strained violently.

Every wolf collapsed except Nancy and Kai.

And even they barely stayed standing.

The Watcher focused entirely on Nancy now.

Then it spoke a sentence that made Nyra recoil in horror.

THE LAST GUARDIAN SAID THE SAME THING.

Nancy's blood ran cold.

Last Guardian?

Nyra's voice became almost inaudible.

…There were others before you.
