Chapter 10 - Semifinals Breaking The Ice

The semifinals arrived with a surge of nervous energy that Yun Qing hadn't felt since his old life. In his cramped apartment, the afternoon light slanted through the thin curtains as he adjusted the VR helmet one last time. His hands were steady, but his mind raced with old ghosts — the memory of rain-slicked rooftops and the final betrayal that had ended his first life. Trust was a luxury he had long learned to live without.

Yet here he was, queuing into the semifinals with Ling Feng.

The map loaded: Abyssal Veil, a sprawling night-time ruins filled with floating platforms, deep chasms, and ever-shifting shadows that changed with the virtual moonlight. Perfect for an assassin, punishing for anyone who couldn't keep up.

Their opponents were the current bracket favorites — "Storm Reapers": a Level 42 wind mage known for devastating crowd control and a Level 40 spear warrior who specialized in aggressive dives and high mobility.

Ling Feng's voice came through the private channel the moment they spawned together, calm and reassuring. "They'll try to separate us with wind gusts. I'll anchor the main platform and control the center. You use the outer shadows. Strike when they overextend."

"Got it," Yun Qing replied, his own voice low and focused. He could already map the fight in his head — the way the wind mage would push them toward the edges, the spear warrior's predictable lunge patterns.

The countdown hit zero.

The Storm Reapers struck hard and fast. The wind mage opened with a howling gale that blasted across the platforms, trying to knock Ling Feng off balance and isolate Yun Qing on a narrow ledge. Ling Feng planted himself like an immovable glacier, activating a wide-area slow zone that countered the gusts and pulled both enemies inward.

Yun Qing didn't wait. He activated Shadow Step, his slender form dissolving into the deepest pools of darkness between the floating ruins. The world turned grayscale and silent as he ghosted along the outer edges, circling behind the spear warrior.

The warrior dove toward Ling Feng with a spinning spear thrust, shouting, "Take this, Ice Emperor!"

Ling Feng absorbed the hit with expert positioning, his health dipping but holding thanks to his tanky build. "Now," he said quietly over chat.

Yun Qing exploded from the shadows.

Shadow Burst detonated at point-blank range against the spear warrior's back, followed by a fluid chain of dagger strikes targeting joints and vital points. Critical hits chained together in a deadly rhythm. The warrior's health bar plummeted.

"Behind me—!" the warrior yelled, trying to spin around.

Too late.

The wind mage swung his staff to launch a rescue tornado, but Ling Feng was already there — a perfectly timed root skill locking the mage in place while his control zone limited escape routes. The Shadow-Ice Link triggered again, shortening cooldowns and letting Yun Qing chain another burst before the enemies could recover.

The synergy felt electric. Ling Feng created openings with ironclad defense and crowd control; Yun Qing filled them with lethal precision and shadow manipulation. Every move complemented the other — ice anchoring shadow, shadow amplifying ice.

The spear warrior tried one last desperate counterattack, lunging toward Yun Qing with everything he had. Yun Qing dodged with the same fluid grace he once used to evade real bullets, then countered with a feint that left the warrior wide open. A final Shadow Burst finished him.

One down.

The wind mage panicked, unleashing a massive storm ultimate that whipped wind blades across the entire arena. Ling Feng took the brunt of it, his health dropping into the red zone as he shielded Yun Qing from the worst.

"Hold on," Yun Qing said, voice tight. He pushed forward through the gale, using shadow clones to draw aggro and create distractions. Then he slipped behind the mage and delivered the killing combo — precise, cold, and final.

The victory screen lit up the darkness in brilliant gold.

Spectator chat exploded:

"That rookie is a monster!"

"Ice Emperor actually protected him like that?!"

"Best duo I've seen in months!"

In the victory lobby, the atmosphere felt different — heavier, more intimate. Ling Feng's avatar turned to face Yun Qing fully, silver-gray eyes no longer purely cold. There was warmth there now, and something deeper.

"You saved me at the end," Ling Feng said quietly. "Most players would have played safe. You pushed through the storm for me."

Yun Qing swallowed, the adrenaline slowly fading. In real life, he leaned back in his chair, heart still racing. "We're a team. That's what teams do."

Ling Feng was silent for a long moment. Then his voice dropped, sincere and a little vulnerable. "Tomorrow is the finals. After that… the café. Midnight Brew, 3 PM. I'll reserve the back pods. We can review the matches, talk about the tournament… or just talk about whatever you want. No game, no masks. Just us."

The invitation hung in the air like a lifeline and a threat all at once.

Yun Qing's mind flashed to blood on concrete and the last words of his betrayer. Trust had cost him everything once. But Ling Feng had fought beside him without hesitation, adapting, protecting, believing in their synergy even when Yun Qing was still a "trash noob."

The walls around his heart — built over years of shadows and silence — cracked a little more.

"…I'll be there," Yun Qing said finally, voice barely above a whisper. "If we win the finals."

Ling Feng's soft exhale sounded almost relieved. "Then we win the finals. I'm looking forward to meeting you, Yun Qing. The real you."

As the lobby timer ticked down, Yun Qing logged out slowly, staring at the ceiling of his tiny apartment.

Tomorrow, the finals.

And the day after… a real meeting with the man who was slowly thawing the ice around the Shadow Emperor's guarded heart.

For the first time in two lives, Yun Qing felt something dangerously close to hope.
