Chapter 6 - Party Lights, Stolen Glances, and a Heated Corner

Saturday night arrived faster than I expected. I stood in front of my mirror adjusting the new black button-up Bella had picked out for me online—fitted just right across the shoulders after a week of lifting with Ryan. My arms looked a little fuller already, the gym paying off quicker than I'd hoped. Downstairs, the house smelled like perfume and energy. Bella was in the living room in a short red dress that hugged her curves like it was daring anyone to look away—dark wavy hair cascading over one shoulder, hazel eyes popping with a touch of makeup. Sophia leaned against the doorframe in a tight black top and jeans that made her long legs look illegal, auburn hair loose and glowing under the hallway light.

"You clean up nice, Ethan," Bella said, looping her arm through mine for a second as we headed out. "Chloe's going to lose it when she sees you."

Alex was waiting outside on his motorcycle, helmet under one arm, that easy tattooed grin in place. "Ride's here if anyone wants it. But the car's safer for the three of you." He nodded at Bella, and she laughed, sliding into the passenger seat of Sophia's car like it was the most natural thing. I took the back, pulse steady but humming. Party night. First real one in this life. No more background guy.

Ryan's cousin's house was already jumping when we pulled up—bass thumping from the open back doors, string lights strung across the yard around a small pool, maybe thirty people milling between the kitchen and the deck. Red cups, laughter, the sharp smell of beer and weed mixing in the warm night air. Ryan spotted me the second we walked in, fist-bumping hard.

"Brooks! You brought the whole crew—nice." His eyes lingered on my sisters for half a second, appreciative but chill. "Chloe and Sarah are already here. Poolside, last I saw."

Chloe found me before I even made it outside. She looked incredible in a simple white tank and denim skirt that showed off those volleyball legs, blonde hair down for once and catching the lights. Blue eyes lit up when she saw me. "You came. And you look… damn, Ethan. Gym's working overtime."

We grabbed drinks—light beer for me, something fruity for her—and fell into easy talk by the pool. She introduced me to a couple more people from the volleyball team, her hand brushing my arm every few minutes like she didn't even notice. The music shifted to something slower, and she pulled me toward the deck to dance. Bodies close, her hips swaying against mine just enough to make my blood run hotter. Nothing crazy—just the kind of intimate press that felt like a promise. Her breath warm on my neck when she leaned in to say something over the beat. "I'm glad you're here."

Sarah appeared a few songs later, sharp green eyes and that athletic body poured into a tight crop top and shorts. She had a new guy with her—some college junior named Tyler she'd apparently met through a mutual friend. Tall, messy brown hair, cocky smile, the kind of build that screamed he played lacrosse or something. "Ethan! Track buddy made it to the dark side," Sarah laughed, bumping my shoulder. Tyler nodded at me, already half-focused on her.

The night blurred in the best way. I danced more with Chloe, her body fitting against mine a little tighter each time. Ryan dragged me over for a quick beer pong game with some teammates, winning us a round and slapping my back like we'd known each other forever. Bella and Sophia floated through the crowd, turning heads without trying—Bella laughing with Alex by the fire pit, his hand resting low on her back for a second as they talked. Sophia had a small group around her, green eyes flashing as she told some story that had everyone leaning in.

I stepped inside for another drink around eleven, the house cooler and quieter away from the main party noise. That's when I wandered down the hallway toward the bathroom and heard it—the low murmur of voices from the half-open door of a guest room.

I wasn't trying to spy. I just… paused.

Sarah and Tyler were in there. Not all the way, but enough. The room was dim, just a lamp on the nightstand. Sarah's back was against the wall, crop top pushed up, Tyler's hands sliding over her bare stomach and higher, cupping her breasts through her bra while they kissed like they were starving for it. Deep, hungry kisses—tongues, soft moans escaping her as his fingers teased under the fabric. Her legs parted a little, one of his thighs pressing between them, grinding slow and deliberate. Sarah's hands were in his hair, pulling him closer, her sharp green eyes half-lidded in pleasure. It wasn't full sex—clothes still mostly on—but it was raw, intimate, the kind of heated make-out that promised more if no one walked in. Tyler whispered something against her neck and she arched into him, letting out a breathy laugh that turned into a quiet gasp when his hand dipped lower, fingers tracing the edge of her shorts.

My stomach did a weird flip. Not jealousy exactly—she wasn't mine—but the sight hit me harder than it should. Sarah, the confident girl from the track who'd winked at me two days ago, now pressed up against some college guy like this was the most natural thing in the world. The way her body moved against his, the soft sounds she made, the sheer heat in that dim room… it stirred something in me I couldn't name. A tiny spark of drama, like the universe was showing me how fast things could shift when you weren't paying attention.

I backed away quiet before they noticed, heart beating a little harder. Back outside, Chloe was waiting by the pool with two fresh drinks. "There you are. Everything okay?"

"Yeah," I said, forcing an easy smile as I took the cup. "Just the line for the bathroom."

We danced again, her body closer now, her hand lingering on my chest. But that hallway glimpse kept flashing in my head—Sarah's arched back, Tyler's hands on her, the way she'd melted into it. It added an edge to the night, a reminder that this life wasn't all clean lines and easy wins. People were moving fast around me.

Bella and Sophia found us later, Alex in tow. My sisters looked flushed and happy, Bella's dress riding up her thighs a bit as she hugged me quick. "This is fun," she said, voice bright. "You two look cute together."

Sophia's eyes caught mine, that knowing smirk. "Don't stay out too late, superstar. We've got all day tomorrow to recover."

We left around one, the car ride home full of laughter and recaps. Chloe had texted me goodnight already—Had the best time. Track Tuesday?—and Sarah had shot me a quick See you at practice, runner like nothing had happened in that room.

I lay in bed later, the house quiet except for the faint sound of Bella and Sophia moving around their rooms. The party replayed in pieces: Chloe's warmth against me, Ryan's easy friendship, my sisters shining like they always did… and that intimate corner with Sarah and Tyler, raw and unfiltered.

It wasn't my moment. But it stuck with me, adding a strange new layer to the momentum I was building.

This life was picking up speed. New people, new sparks, new glimpses behind closed doors.

And I was right in the middle of it.
