Chapter 9 - Forced Placement

Training ended without ceremony.

No closing speech.

No reflection.

Just a final command.

"Dismissed."

The word cut through the gym, and everything stopped.

Students straightened.

Then moved.

Not rushed. Not relaxed. Controlled, even in leaving.

Pairs broke apart. Gis were adjusted. Bags were collected.

The system did not linger.

It ended cleanly.

Kai stood in place for a moment longer.

His body still carried the memory of repetition. The failed movements. The slight adjustments. The small improvements that no one had acknowledged.

He exhaled slowly.

Then stepped back.

Around him, the squads began to separate.

Eagle moved together.

Viper followed.

Elephant and Rhino formed their own groups.

Tiger did not.

Mateo had already turned away.

Luna stood still for a moment, then began to gather her things.

Jin-Sensei remained near the front.

Unmoving.

As if the end of training did not apply to him.

Kai stayed where he was.

He watched the room empty.

He expected something.

A final decision.

A confirmation.

Anything.

It came from Sensei Hodge.

"Clarke."

Kai turned.

"Yes."

Sensei Hodge held a clipboard again.

Different from earlier.

More formal.

"Step forward."

Kai did.

A few students slowed as they passed.

Watching.

Not openly.

But enough.

Sensei Hodge looked down briefly, then spoke clearly.

"Final provisional placement for today is being recorded."

Kai felt his chest tighten slightly.

This was it.

Not a suggestion.

Not temporary in tone.

Official.

"Tiger Squad," Sensei Hodge said.

He wrote it down.

Deliberate.

Permanent.

"Kai Clarke assigned to Tiger Squad."

The words settled into the room.

Clear.

Recorded.

Not open to interpretation.

Kai felt it.

Different from earlier.

Before, he had been placed.

Now, it was written.

Documented.

Fixed.

A few students reacted.

One from Rhino let out a quiet laugh.

Another from Viper shook his head.

"That makes sense," someone said under their breath.

"Of course it does," another replied.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But present.

Kai heard it.

Every word.

Every tone.

Tiger Squad.

The lowest squad.

And now, officially, he belonged to it.

Mateo turned back.

He had heard it.

Of course he had.

His expression was controlled.

But the reaction was there.

Clear.

"No."

The word cut through the space.

Not loud.

But direct.

Sensei Hodge looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

Mateo stepped forward.

"He doesn't belong in Tiger Squad."

There was no hesitation.

No attempt to soften it.

Kai felt irritation rise immediately.

Luna did not speak.

But she watched.

Carefully.

Mateo continued.

"He slows the squad down. He doesn't meet the standard."

Sensei Hodge did not respond immediately.

Jin-Sensei stepped forward instead.

"This is not a request," he said.

Mateo's jaw tightened.

"It affects the squad."

"Correct," Jin-Sensei replied.

A pause.

"And it has been decided."

Mateo held his gaze.

For a second.

Then two.

Then he looked away.

Frustration contained.

Not resolved.

Kai watched the exchange.

Felt it clearly.

This was not disagreement.

This was rejection.

Direct.

Unfiltered.

Luna spoke next.

Quiet.

Measured.

"On what basis was the decision made?"

She was not arguing.

She was asking.

Jin-Sensei looked at her.

"Evaluation."

Simple.

Clear.

Luna's eyes shifted briefly toward Kai.

Then back.

She said nothing more.

But the question remained.

Unspoken now.

Why him?

Kai felt that too.

From both of them.

Mateo rejected it.

Luna questioned it.

Neither accepted it.

The other squads continued to move past them.

A few slowed.

Watching.

Not interested.

Just observing.

Tiger Squad was already seen as unstable.

This confirmed it.

Kai stepped forward.

He did not wait.

"I'll take it."

The words came out steady.

Mateo looked at him immediately.

Sharp.

Unimpressed.

"This isn't something you take," Mateo said. "It's something you earn."

Kai met his gaze.

"I'll earn it."

"You haven't."

"Then I will."

The exchange held for a moment.

Then Mateo looked away again.

Dismissed.

Luna said nothing.

Jin-Sensei observed.

Kai understood the situation clearly now.

No one here wanted this.

Not Mateo.

Not Luna.

Not the other squads.

Not even the system, fully.

This was not a welcome.

This was placement.

And he was the problem within it.

Kai exhaled slowly.

He did not argue further.

Did not try to justify himself.

He stepped back into position.

Beside them.

Not accepted.

Not acknowledged.

But present.

Tiger Squad.

Jin-Sensei.

Mateo.

Luna.

Kai.

Four people.

One structure.

Forced.

The gym emptied further.

The noise faded.

Soon, only a few remained.

Then even they were gone.

Kai stood there for a moment longer.

Then turned.

Followed the others out.

Not with them.

Not behind them.

Just moving in the same direction.

The placement was done.

The decision was made.

And now, whether anyone wanted it or not...

They would have to function together.
