Chapter 52 - Azura gang

Chapter 52

The bar looked nothing like the abandoned building from a week ago.

The walls were painted a deep charcoal gray, the floors refinished to a warm brown, the bar itself polished to a shine. Bottles lined the shelves behind it—whiskey, rum, vodka, brands Elijah didn't recognize but knew cost money. The stools were new, the tables were clean, and the lights overhead cast a warm glow across the room.

Upstairs, four rooms had been finished. The main office at the end of the hall, two bedrooms on either side, and a small kitchen near the stairs. Simple, functional, theirs.

Elijah stood behind the bar, watching the carters bring in the last of the bottles. He checked each one as they set them down, counting, making sure nothing was missing. The men worked quickly, efficiently, and when they were done, they left without a word.

He was alone for a moment. He looked around the room—at the bar, at the tables, at the stairs leading up to the rooms above.

Ours.

The door opened.

Kai walked in first, his eyes moving over the room, taking it all in. Behind him came Mai, her purple hair falling past her shoulders, her dark purple eyes wide as she looked around. And behind her, Rena stepped through the door, her black hair pulled back, her face calm but curious.

Mai's eyes found Elijah. She walked toward him, her steps hesitant at first, then faster.

"Elijah," she said.

"Mai."

She stopped in front of him, her hands clasped in front of her, her cheeks flushing slightly. "I never got to thank you properly. For saving me. For—" Her voice caught. "For everything."

Elijah shook his head. "It was nothing."

"It wasn't nothing." Her voice was firm. "You almost died."

Elijah didn't answer. He just nodded, accepting her words.

Rena stepped forward, her eyes moving over Elijah's face. She was taller than Mai, her features sharper, but the resemblance was clear—the same high cheekbones, the same full lips, the same dark purple eyes that held too much to ever fully hide.

"It's good to see you again," Rena said. "It's been a long time. You've grown."

Elijah smiled. "You too. Still beautiful as always."

Rena's eyebrows rose. Then she laughed, "Elijah, you're becoming a charmer."

"I learned from Kai."

Kai snorted from across the room. "He did not learn that from me."

Rena's smile faded slightly. Her hand reached out and touched Elijah's arm. "I'm sorry about your husband," Elijah said quietly. "He was a good man."

Rena shook her head. "We should be the ones saying thank you. You saved us. Both of you." She looked at Kai, then back at Elijah. "We owe you everything."

Elijah didn't argue. He just nodded.

Henry burst through the door like he owned the place.

His arm was still in a sling, but his steps were light, his green eyes bright, his energy filling the room. "This place looks amazing," he said, spinning in a slow circle. "Kai, you weren't joking."

Kai leaned against the bar, his arms crossed. "You look better than yesterday."

"I heal fast." Henry grinned. "Eighty-five percent, Maybe ninety almost at my peak."

"That's not how healing works."

"That's how my healing works."

Kai shook his head. "Yesterday you couldn't stand. Today you're walking around like nothing happened."

Henry struck back immediately. "Yesterday you almost got choked out by Victor. Today you're standing here making jokes. We both had bad nights."

Kai's jaw tightened, but the corner of his mouth twitched. "Fair."

Elijah laughed, the sound surprising even himself. Henry and Kai both looked at him, and then Henry started laughing too.

The door opened again.

Aurora stepped inside.

Her silver hair was pulled back, the cut above her eye healed to a thin pink line. Her blue eyes moved over the room—the bar, the tables, the people—settling finally on Elijah. She wore dark jeans and a fitted jacket, simple, practical.

"Nice place," she said.

Elijah nodded. "Glad you came."

"I am the one whose glad to be here."

Henry looked her up and down. "I keep forgetting your name."

"I'm the one who lost to Elijah."

"Is your name Areuro or something."

"It's not." Aurora moved to the bar and sat on one of the stools. "It is Aurora."

Kai stood beside Elijah. Everyone was here—Kai, Henry, Aurora, Mai, Rena.

Elijah took a deep breath.

He reached under the bar and pulled out a bottle—whiskey, dark amber, expensive. He set it on the counter along with six small cups. He poured slowly, evenly, filling each cup to the same level.

When he was done, he looked at everyone in the room.

"Today," he said, "is the start of the Azura Gang."

His voice was steady, calm.

"This is our base. From here, we're going to take over the 9th District. But first, we need to make our foundation solid. That means taking this territory. The blocks around this bar. The streets, the buildings, the people. They become ours."

He picked up his cup.

"We're going to make a lot of enemies. We're going to put ourselves in dangerous situations. People are going to try to kill us. Some of them might succeed."

His eyes moved over each of them—Kai, Henry, Aurora, Mai, Rena.

"But I promise you this. I will protect everyone in this room. Because in this world, the only people we can look at and fight beside are family. Blood doesn't matter. What matters is standing together when the battles come."

His voice dropped lower.

"I hope no one here ever betrays us. Because if someone hurts my family—my blood or the people in this room—I won't forgive them. Ever."

Killing intent laced his words. Not directed at anyone in the room, but a promise.

Then he smiled.

"But for now, let's enjoy this drink. And then we pay a visit to our nearby gang."

He raised his cup.

Everyone raised theirs.

They drank.

Henry set his cup down and let out a low whistle. "That was a good damn speech. I wanted that yesterday. "

Elijah looked at him. "Now I gave you your speech."

They both laughed.

The door opened.

Three men walked in. With clothes that had a symbol, hard faces, hands in their pockets. The same men who had been watching the bar for days.

They stopped when they saw the group inside. Their eyes moved over Kai, over Henry, over Aurora. Then they looked at Elijah.

Elijah set his cup down and smiled.

"Welcome," he said.

Every empire starts small before the world notices it.

And the dangerous thing about ambition is that once it begins growing…

it rarely stops where you planned.

The deeper the story goes, the more this stops being about random underground fights and starts becoming something heavier.

Territories.

Loyalty.

Power.

Influence.

And the people gathering around Elijah now will eventually become part of moments that change far more than just one district.

Some bonds will strengthen.

Some people will evolve.

And some enemies won't understand what they're walking into until it's already too late.

Because sometimes the most important moments in a story begin quietly…

With a drink raised between people who have no idea how far they're about to go.
