Chapter 237 - The Eleventh Transformation

Chapter 237: The Eleventh Transformation

The seven-meter-tall Asura Transformation stood anchored in the center of the ruined corridor, a towering monstrosity of bone and lightning. Five-colored light flowed like liquid glass over its massive skeletal frame. Infused with the raw power of the Five Elements, the thunder body encasing the bones had grown terrifyingly dense, while the Yao Qi radiating from its surface shifted from a translucent haze into a heavy, physical mist that hissed against the stone floor.

Hakushin finally retreated.

The withered, mummified figure drifted backward, settling onto the ground at the far end of the corridor. The scattered prayer beads levitated from the dust, snapping back into his waiting palm.

His cloudy, sunken eyes locked onto the Asura Transformation.

Hikaru could feel the weight of that gaze pressing against his very soul. The ancient monk was looking at him seriously now. He was no longer looking at a mere vengeful spirit in need of a routine purification; he was looking at a genuine threat. The dismissive air was gone, replaced by the heavy, suffocating focus of a predator recognizing a rival.

Then, Hakushin moved. He did not teleport this time. He did not cast out his prayer beads, nor did any blinding pillars of holy light erupt from the heavens.

Instead, the air behind him warped, tearing open to reveal three massive beast shadows.

He had summoned the three guardian spirits he had previously swallowed into the mountain's core.

The Vajra Lion tore its way out of the solid mountain wall, its tattered golden spiritual body marred by deep, smoldering blood-fire burns.

The Heavenly Eye Peacock seeped down from the cracked ceiling, a majestic golden phantom with broken wings, half of its ethereal form frozen solid by a lingering, biting moonlight.

Finally, Hyōbi-shin—a pitch-black spiritual entity dragging a severed tail—clawed its way out from a jagged fissure in the floorboards.

The battered remnants of the three guardian spirits surged toward the seated monk simultaneously. Golden, black, and pure white spiritual light poured into that withered, mummified vessel like three raging tributaries crashing into a parched riverbed.

Hakushin's physical form began to warp.

His spine, hunched for centuries, snapped violently straight. His withered, paper-thin flesh expanded, bulging with unnatural vitality. The ancient monk robes shattered into dust, revealing the petrified skin beneath. The grayish-white contours of his body resembled the jagged, layered strata of a mountain, shifting and swelling section by section.

Flesh tore. Bone cracked. Four new arms violently extended from beneath his ribs, bursting through his sides.

Each of his six hands grasped a different divine artifact—a vajra pestle, a blooming lotus, a precious sword, and strings of glowing prayer beads.

A fleshy ushnisha swelled atop his bald head. His previously haggard, corpse-like face smoothed out, transforming into a visage of upright, terrifying solemnity. His cloudy eyes ignited, burning with a blinding, molten gold.

The pure Power of Will completely eradicated the lingering resentment in the air.

He was no longer a trapped vengeful spirit. He was no longer a demonic Buddha rotting inside a mountain.

He had become a true Bodhisattva.

The Living Buddha devoured the Mandate Power of the three guardian spirits, manifesting a divine form. Four solemn arms, flowing precious light, and a suffocating wave of Power of Will poured from him at ten times the previous concentration.

Down the length of the corridor, the remaining stone Buddhist statues shattered simultaneously. The shockwave of holy energy pulverized them into fine dust.

Hakushin reclaimed all the power within them. Every ounce of Buddha Power embedded in Mount Hakurei, all the physical fossils, and the agonizing accumulation of centuries poured directly into this Bodhisattva form.

The suppressive force in the corridor skyrocketed, slamming down like a falling sky.

Under the crushing pressure of the Bodhisattva form, the massive skeleton of the Asura Transformation began to groan. Bone dust drifted from Hikaru's joints.

The seven-meter giant was forced down, shrinking back to six and a half meters.

The pressure intensified. Six and a half meters ground down toward six meters.

It was like a mayfly trying to uproot an ancient oak.

The Ten-Transformation Five-Organ Asura against Hakushin's Bodhisattva form—the gap was a chasm. An impossible difference in sheer, fundamental level.

Within the skull of the Asura, Hikaru's Crimson Demon Eyes shimmered, reflecting the intense light of the Five Elements. Purple patterns, orange flares, silver brilliance, emerald traces, and pale white streaks layered over his scarlet pupils, surging together in a chaotic storm.

He knew exactly how strong he was. Using the most pragmatic metric, he could effortlessly slaughter three of his former four-organ selves at the exact same time. Among Twelve-Transformation demons, his foundation was rock solid. He possessed genuine, terrifying accumulation.

By his own categorization, which Twelve-Transformation demon hadn't spent at least several centuries hoarding power? The weakest were four or five hundred years old. The strongest, monsters like Kidomaru, bordered on being true Great Yokais—ancient ghosts over a millennium old whose domains could outpace ordinary Great Yokais in sheer speed.

The baseline for that tier was absurdly high. Yet, Hikaru was chasing—and in some aspects, exceeding—five hundred years of demonic depth with barely a single year of grinding.

But against this? It clearly wasn't enough.

He was facing a Living Buddha. A semi-awakened saint standing only a single step away from true enlightenment and Nirvana. A high monk who harbored dark resentment in his heart, yet still commanded the absolute authority of a Bodhisattva.

Surpassing the accumulation of a five-hundred-year-old demon meant nothing here.

His Ten Transformations were not enough.

He needed to force the next step.

He needed the Eleventh Transformation: the three souls. The Heavenly Soul, the Earthly Soul, and the human soul.

He had mapped out the concept for this evolution long ago, designing a brutal, hyper-efficient path to rapid success.

He naturally possessed the Earthly Soul. The very essence of an Oni Samurai was rebirth after death. The Earthly Soul was the absolute foundation of his demonization, rooted deep in his marrow since the first second he opened his eyes in this world.

But the Heavenly Soul...

That required the Shikon Jewel.

It required that cursed, precious orb—the artifact that sealed the howling resentment of hundreds of demons and the pure soul of the strongest priestess in history.

Hikaru did not have the Shikon Jewel in his hands.

But he had someone who did.

He had Kikyo.

The Shikon Jewel rested against Kikyo's chest, and Kikyo was waiting outside the temple.

He didn't need to hold it. He only needed a medium. A connection.

An arrow—shot from the outside world directly into the heart of the mountain.

On the jagged secondary peak directly opposite the main summit of Mount Hakurei.

Kikyo stood perfectly still at the edge of the cliff, the fierce mountain wind whipping her white robes and red hakama around her legs.

Her longbow was fully drawn. The string bit deeply into her fingers, pulled to its absolute limit. Blinding white spiritual power condensed at the arrow's iron tip, swelling into a dense, crackling sphere three feet in diameter.

Behind her loomed the massive, shimmering wall of Mount Hakurei's Buddha Power Barrier. A jagged rift tore through the golden energy—a wound she had spent two grueling days carving open.

The rift was trying to heal, its edges continuously shrinking.

Against her collarbone, the Shikon Jewel vibrated violently. The pure light of the naohi within it flared, piercing straight through the heavy fabric of her priestess robes and casting a brilliant, pulsing halo of white light over her skin.

Deep within the jewel, Midoriko's ancient remnant soul whispered into her mind.

"The time has come."

Kikyo released the string.

The arrow vanished. It tore through the rift in the barrier, dragging a violent wake of spiritual power three feet wide behind it. It traversed the vast, empty space separating the two peaks in a fraction of a second, hurtling straight for the temple at the summit.

But this arrow was not aimed at Hakushin.

It was aimed directly at Tsuchimikado Kokoro.

Outside the temple at the summit.

Kokoro, currently possessed by the ancient will of Nue, stood casually balanced on the edge of the roof ridge. Seven massive puppet demons surrounded the young girl like a grotesque honor guard.

The Blue-Faced Oni, the Giant Centipede, the Cyclops, the Chariot Bird, the Petrifying Python, the Two-Headed Hound, and the Iron Rat. Seven Materialization-level puppets, heavily modified and bound by high-tier Onmyodo. Golden chains and glowing pentagram runes interwove between their massive bodies, locking them into a flawless defensive array.

Kikyo stood on the distant mountain peak, firing arrows across the vast expanse of the sky.

The two women had been locked in this long-distance sniper duel for a full quarter of an hour.

Kikyo's spiritual archery defied logic. To say she could 'pierce a willow leaf from a hundred paces' was a pathetic understatement. On a battlefield, she was an artillery strike in human form, a divine archer who brought absolute death.

Even here, firing across a mountain range, her archery combined with her suffocating spiritual power exerted a terrifying, lethal pressure.

Every single arrow she fired bypassed the puppets' thick hides, striking instantly at the microscopic Onmyodo formulas painted on their flesh. She hit rune beads, chain joints, and the very cores of their animating techniques with surgical precision.

Fortunately, Nue's reaction speed was monstrous. The ancient entity's manipulation of the seven puppets far exceeded anything Kokoro could achieve on her own. The moment Kikyo's arrows severed a control line, Nue reconnected it in the blink of an eye. Shattered rune beads were instantly bypassed and replaced, keeping the seven massive demons at peak combat strength.

More terrifyingly, Nue had condensed their auras into a single, unified entity.

Seven powerful demons—each sitting at the Ninth or Tenth Transformation by Hikaru's standards—were linked together. It was the equivalent of a massive, overlapping 'Fear' field. In terms of sheer damage resistance, this puppet formation rivaled a Great Yokai.

That was the only reason they could withstand Kikyo's Sacred Arrows.

It looked like a perfect stalemate.

But Nue, staring through Kokoro's eyes, knew this was merely an illusion.

The golden vertical pupils narrowed slightly, and the faint, amused smile on the possessed girl's lips deepened.

"Truly impressive."

Nue spoke, the voice echoing low and strange through Kokoro's throat. It sounded distant, carrying the weight of centuries past.

"Not a single arrow wasted. Every drop of spiritual power used to its absolute, lethal extreme. It has been a quarter of an hour of continuous, maximum-draw firing, yet her breathing hasn't faltered in the slightest."

The golden eyes gazed across the chasm, locking onto the tiny figure in white and red standing on the opposite peak. An indescribable light shimmered deep within those ancient pupils.

There was no hostility. There was no fear.

There was only deep admiration.

"The Midoriko of back then, even as the creator of the Shikon Jewel, did not possess this level of terrifying mental fortitude at your age."

Nue sighed, the sound carrying a strange melancholy.

"Have you... already overcome the trial of love?"

Before the echo of the words faded into the wind, Kikyo's ninth arrow arrived.

This arrow did not aim for the Cyclops's eye. It did not target the Centipede's joints.

It aimed dead center at the petrified roof ridge directly beneath Kokoro's feet.

Nue's golden vertical pupils violently constricted.

In a fraction of a second, instincts honed over hundreds of years of slaughter screamed a frantic, deafening warning.

Nue saw it.

In the exact moment the arrow left Kikyo's bowstring, the ancient entity saw through the entire scheme.

Nine arrows. Nine specific landing points.

From the very first shot, the priestess hadn't been trying to wear down the puppets. The attacks on the shikigami were nothing but a flawless, high-pressure diversion. The true killing move had been quietly buried deep within the architecture of the mountain itself.

Following the petrified bones and flesh of Hakushin that made up the temple, Kikyo's spiritual power had silently seeped into the stone, weaving an invisible, explosive spiritual net that covered half the summit.

Once all nine anchors were set, they would detonate simultaneously.

Nue saw the trap perfectly.

"...Remarkable."

There was no panic in the golden eyes. Only a look of genuine, heartfelt praise.

But seeing the trap and surviving it were two entirely different things. The mind was willing, but the flesh was agonizingly weak.

That was the fatal flaw.

Nue was an incomplete will, a phantom clawing its way back from Hell to possess a living host. This was not a true descent.

It could use Kokoro's eyes to see through the most brilliant tactical schemes. It could use Kokoro's brain to instantly deduce the perfect countermeasure.

But its hands... were the soft, fragile hands of a fifteen-year-old girl.

The Onmyodo cultivation housed within this young vessel couldn't exert even one ten-thousandth of Nue's true, world-breaking strength.

To dismantle Kikyo's spiritual net, Nue needed to simultaneously sever the invisible spiritual threads connecting the nine anchors to the mountain's core.

If Nue possessed its original body, it would have required nothing more than a casual snap of the fingers.

In Kokoro's body? It was mathematically impossible.

It was like shoving a legendary master swordsman into the body of a newborn infant. The mind knew exactly the angle, the speed, and the breath required to swing the blade—but the tiny arms couldn't even lift the steel.

Nue sighed again.

The sound escaped Kokoro's lips, carrying a heavy, ancient world-weariness that looked entirely wrong on the young girl's face.

"What a pity."

The golden vertical pupils took one final, lingering look at the distant figure in white and red.

"As expected of the strongest priestess of this era. It is no disgrace to lose to you."

The ninth arrow slammed into the petrified tiles.

Spiritual power violently erupted from the wooden shaft. Pure white energy spider-webbed along the complex patterns of the roof, following the spinal structure of the ridge straight down into the depths of the mountain.

Deep into the petrified flesh of Hakushin.

On the distant peak, Kikyo drew her bow one final time.

The tenth arrow.

The sphere of spiritual glow at the arrowhead exploded outward, expanding from three feet to a massive five feet in diameter.

She fired.

The moment the arrow crossed the threshold, the nine buried anchors activated simultaneously.

Blinding white light detonated from inside the mountain. The roof ridge violently shattered into dust. Massive stone pillars cracked and buckled. Half of the temple's outer structures collapsed inward, completely pulverized by the piercing, purifying spiritual power.

The complex Onmyodo control lines binding the seven puppet demons were instantly vaporized by the erupting spiritual net.

Everything happened at once. A total, catastrophic collapse in a single instant.

Nue's flawless control over the puppets shattered. Maintaining the control lines while simultaneously suppressing Kokoro's soul had already pushed the girl's limited spiritual pathways to their breaking point. The violent backlash from the total destruction of the puppets surged back through the connection, directly crushing the foundation of the possession.

The Blue-Faced Oni's core rune bead exploded, and the massive husk went rigidly dead, crashing to the tiles.

The Giant Centipede's hundred legs spasmed violently before the beast went limp.

The Cyclops's knees buckled, its thirty-foot-tall body slamming face-first into the rising cloud of rubble.

The Chariot Bird, the Petrifying Python, the Two-Headed Hound, the Iron Rat—all seven terrifying puppets shut down simultaneously, like complex clockwork mechanisms violently stripped of their mainsprings.

The possessed Kokoro stumbled hard as the backlash hit her brain. The shockwave of the collapsing roof caught her small frame, sending her flying backward until she crashed heavily into a pile of shattered stone.

The golden vertical pupils flickered rapidly, fighting to stay open.

In the final fraction of a second before consciousness completely receded, Nue's fading will forced Kokoro's bruised lips to move, silently mouthing a single sentence into the dust.

There was no sound. Only the shape of the words.

"Well done... Next time, we meet in Kyoto."

Then, the golden tide violently receded.

The ancient shadow that had coiled like a venomous snake around Kokoro's soul dissolved, burning away like morning mist under a harsh sun.

Her large, expressive eyes lost their golden glow, returning to their natural, warm amber color before sliding shut.

A brutal, high-speed stalemate that had lasted a full quarter of an hour.

In the end, it only took one arrow to decide the victor.
