Chapter 304: Second Sight
The ice pellets from Bastion Nine fell mercilessly onto the sloping slate roof.
The sky in the eastern quarter was a dark, heavy shade of purple. Below, the city was silent, hiding behind heavy shutters and locked doors. At the corner of an old tenement building, a syndicate watchman by the name of Kaelen sat absolutely still beside a falling-apart chimney.
Kaelen was a professional. Ice water dripped through his black wool coat, but he did not tremble.
He did not rub his hands together to generate warmth.
The shadows to his left shifted unnaturally.
Nyx Vespera melted out of the darkness. She did not make a single sound as her heavy combat boots touched the slick, wet tiles. A lesser man would have drawn a weapon or gasped in shock. Kaelen simply turned his head. He recognized the sleek, pitch-black combat uniform of the Phantom Queen.
"Your perimeter is completely clear," Nyx whispered into the rain.
