Chapter 2 - Same?

The next day at lunch, Rajat was climbing the grand staircase of the main school building, each step feeling heavier than the last. His mind was a chaotic mess, replaying yesterday's events on a loop.

*That kiss. It felt so real. Her lips were so soft. But it wasn't real, it was for show. For her. Why would the most beautiful girl I've ever seen pick me? Me? She was just scared of that guy. But the way she looked at me after... and she said it was her first kiss. Mine too. God, I can still feel it. What does it even mean? Nothing. It has to mean nothing. I'll probably never see her again anyway.*

He shook his head, trying to physically dislodge the memory, and looked up. His breath caught in his throat. There she was. Ranjita. She was wearing the school uniform, but she wore it like no one else did. The white shirt was unbuttoned just enough to show a daring amount of cleavage, and the pleated skirt seemed shorter than regulation, hugging her hips. She was leaning against a railing, laughing with another girl.

Just then, the other girl, a stunning girl with even bolder makeup, nudged Ranjita. "Come on, Ranjita Malla, we're going to be late for class!"

Ranjita Malla.

The name hit Rajat like a physical blow. *Ranjita Malla? The Ranjita Malla? The TikTok queen? The girl who's voted 'Most Beautiful' every year? The one every guy in school fantasizes about? That was the girl from yesterday?*

As if his thoughts had summoned her, Ranjita looked down from the landing, her eyes sweeping across the crowd of students on the stairs. They landed directly on him. Her laughing expression vanished, replaced by pure, unadulterated shock. Her eyes widened as the realization dawned on her, too. *He's from my school.*

Ranjita quickly whispered something to her friend, Priya, and peeled away from the group. She practically jogged down the stairs, her eyes locked on Rajat. He was frozen in place, his heart pounding in his throat.

"Come with me," she said, her voice a tense whisper. She didn't wait for an answer, just grabbed his wrist and pulled him along, away from the prying eyes in the hallway. She dragged him down a deserted corridor and into an empty classroom, shutting the door behind them. The click of the latch echoed in the silent room.

They stood there for a moment, the silence deafening. Rajat couldn't look at her, his face burning with a blush so hot it felt like a fever.

"I... I'm so sorry about yesterday," Ranjita finally said, her voice small. She was twisting the hem of her skirt, her cheeks flushed a deep crimson. "I didn't know who else to ask. I was just... panicked."

"It's... it's okay," Rajat managed to mumble, still staring at the floor. "I'm just... surprised. I didn't know you went here."

"I didn't know you did either," she said, finally looking up at him. Their eyes met, and the blush on both their faces intensified. The memory of the kiss hung between them, heavy and undeniable. "So... you're in 11th grade too?"

Rajat just nodded, unable to form words. The most popular girl in school was apologizing to him in an empty classroom, and all he could think about was how her lips had felt on his.

Rajat finally found his voice, though it came out as a nervous croak. "I just... I didn't think that the most popular girl in school... that you'd never had a boyfriend. Or a kiss... until yesterday."

Ranjita's blush deepened, and she looked away, focusing on a crack in the wall. "It's not like that," she said softly. "Everyone just sees the TikToks and the clothes. They think I'm this... experienced person. But it's all for show. It's easier to act confident than to let people see you're scared. Guys like Vikram... they don't want to get to know me. They just want... you know." She gestured vaguely at her body. "So I push them away with attitude before they can get close enough to hurt me. I've never... let anyone."

The vulnerability in her voice made Rajat's chest ache. He felt like he was seeing the real her for the first time.

She took a hesitant step closer. "About yesterday... the kiss." Her eyes met his, and they were filled with a confusing mix of shyness and determination. "Something... changed in me. When we kissed, it felt different. It wasn't for Vikram anymore, not at the end. It was... real. For a second." She bit her lip. "Can we... can we try it again? Without an audience?"

Rajat's mind went blank. He could only nod, his throat too tight to speak.

They leaned in slowly, this time with no pressure, no bully to perform for. Their lips met again, a gentle, tentative touch. It was soft and sweet, and it sent a jolt straight through Rajat's entire body. When they pulled apart, they were both blushing harder than ever.

"Sorry," Ranjita whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I just... had to know. Do you... do you have a girlfriend?"

The question was so absurd he almost laughed. "No," he said, shaking his head. "Definitely not."

A small, relieved smile touched her lips. "Good." She took a deep breath, as if gathering courage. "What happened between us last night... it changed something. I'm tired of the fake world, the TikToks, the popularity contest. I want to experience the real world... with you."

Rajat stared at her, completely floored. *The real world... with me?* He looked at her, truly looked at her. Not just the beautiful, popular girl, but the person underneath who was just as scared and lonely as he was. And he had to admit, his eyes kept drifting to her body, to the curve of her hips and the swell of her breasts beneath her uniform shirt. She was right there, asking him.

He swallowed hard. "Okay," he breathed out. "Yes." Because what else could he say? The most beautiful girl in school was asking him to be her guide to something real, and his body was screaming at him to accept.
