Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Girl Who Smiled Through Pain

The rain fell softly over the quiet streets of the city, as if the sky itself was crying for someone it had lost.

Inside a small café by the roadside, Aarav sat alone, staring at his untouched cup of coffee. The world around him moved fast—cars passing, people laughing, phones ringing—but for him, everything felt slow… distant.

Aarav wasn't always like this.

Once, he used to smile easily. Once, he believed in love.

But life had a strange way of taking things away.

He sighed and looked outside through the glass window. That's when he saw her.

A girl.

Standing under the rain.

No umbrella. No rush.

Just… standing there.

Her long hair was soaked, sticking to her face, and yet—she was smiling.

Not a fake smile.

Not a forced one.

A real smile.

Aarav frowned slightly. Who smiles like that in the rain?

Something about her didn't feel normal. Not in a bad way—but in a way that made him curious.

Without thinking much, he stood up, grabbed an extra umbrella from the café stand, and walked outside.

The rain hit his face instantly.

He walked toward her slowly.

"Hey… you'll get sick," he said, holding the umbrella over her.

The girl looked at him, surprised.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Her eyes… they were different.

Beautiful—but tired.

Like someone who had cried too much… but didn't want the world to know.

She smiled again. "Thank you… but I like the rain."

Aarav blinked. "You like getting drenched?"

She laughed softly. "Sometimes, rain hides tears better than anything else."

That line hit him.

Hard.

Because he understood it.

More than he wanted to admit.

He looked away for a second. "Still… doesn't mean you should stand here forever."

She tilted her head. "Are you always this serious?"

"Only when I meet strange people," he replied.

She smiled again. "Then I guess I'm very strange."

There was something warm in that moment.

Something simple.

Something… alive.

After a short pause, Aarav asked, "What's your name?"

"Meera," she said.

"Aarav."

Silence followed—but it wasn't awkward.

Just quiet.

Peaceful.

They walked back into the café together.

Inside, Meera sat across from Aarav, holding a cup of hot tea now. Her hands trembled slightly—not from cold, but something deeper.

Aarav noticed.

"You okay?" he asked.

She nodded quickly. "Yeah… just tired."

But Aarav didn't believe it.

There was something broken behind her smile.

Something she was hiding.

And strangely… he felt connected to it.

"Why were you standing in the rain?" he asked.

She looked down at her cup.

For a long time, she didn't answer.

Then finally, she whispered—

"Because it feels like someone is holding me… without asking questions."

Aarav froze.

He didn't expect that answer.

Not from a stranger.

Not from someone who smiled so easily.

He didn't know what to say.

So he didn't say anything.

Sometimes silence is kinder than words.

Days passed.

But Aarav couldn't forget her.

Meera.

The girl who smiled in the rain.

The girl who spoke like she carried a thousand untold stories.

He started visiting that café every day at the same time.

At first, he told himself it was coincidence.

But deep down, he knew—

He was waiting for her.

And one evening…

She came back.

This time, she wasn't in the rain.

She was standing at the door, looking at him like she had been searching for him too.

"You came," Aarav said without thinking.

Meera smiled. "So did you."

That was the beginning.

Not of love.

Not yet.

But of something fragile.

Something beautiful.

Something that could either heal them…

Or break them even more.

As they talked more that evening, Aarav learned small things about her:

She loved old songs

She wrote poems but never showed anyone

She hated lies more than anything

But there were also things she avoided:

Her family

Her past

And the reason behind her sadness

Aarav didn't push.

Because he knew—

Some stories need time to be told.

When Meera left that night, she stopped at the door and turned back.

"Aarav…"

"Yeah?"

"If I disappear someday… would you remember me?"

The question felt strange.

Unnecessary.

But also… heavy.

Aarav frowned. "Why would you disappear?"

She didn't answer.

Just smiled.

That same soft, painful smile.

"Just tell me."

Aarav looked at her for a moment.

Then he said quietly—

"I don't think I could forget you… even if I tried."

Meera's eyes softened.

And for a second…

It looked like she might cry.

But she didn't.

She just nodded… and walked away.

That night, Aarav couldn't sleep.

Her question echoed in his mind.

"If I disappear someday…"

Why would she say that?

What was she hiding?

And why did it feel like…

Time was running out?
