Chapter 20 — The Sky-Serpent's Fall
Kai took a deep breath. The cold, electric air of the Empty Waters filled his lungs.
Time to use everything I have learned in my training.
He jumped.
Not upward — forward, from the deck of the flagship, his body arcing toward the colossal serpent that blotted out the sky. As gravity began to claim him, he drove his heel into empty air.
The atmosphere cracked.
A thunderous rupture exploded beneath his foot, sending a circular shockwave rippling outward for kilometers. The force of the kick launched him higher, transforming the empty sky into a staircase of shattered pressure points.
Another kick. Another crack.
Higher. Higher. Higher.
He climbed above the serpent's head, above the orc guardian raining beams of light from the clouds, above even the thin, frozen wisps of the uppermost atmosphere. The serpent's immense form — larger than any mountain range — coiled beneath him, its scales gleaming with the dull, dying light of a forgotten sun.
Then Kai twisted sideways and punched.
His fist connected with the serpent's skull with the force of a meteor striking a continent.
The impact was cataclysmic. The serpent's entire body — miles of coiled muscle and bone — lifted out of the black sea. The sheer displacement of its mass rising from the water generated a tsunami that raced outward, waves tall enough to swallow smaller vessels whole. The creature flew upward, propelled by Kai's blow, passing the orc guardian, climbing into the heavens.
Kai did not stop.
He ran across the air, his feet striking invisible platforms with each step, each impact leaving behind a ruptured ring of white light. He caught up to the serpent's head and began to fight — not from a distance, not with strategy, but with raw, brutal, hand-to-hand combat in the open sky.
His fists hammered the serpent's face. His legs kicked its throat. He struck from the left, from the right, from above and below, each blow landing with the weight of a cannonade. Before the serpent could even register that it had been launched skyward, Kai was already on its opposite side, raining down blows from every angle.
The serpent, dazed and furious, whipped its tail upward. The massive appendage wrapped around Kai's body — not gently, but like a constrictor crushing its prey — and hurled him downward toward the black sea. The speed was immense. The water rushed up to meet him.
Kai punched the ocean.
His fist struck the surface a split second before his body would have hit, and the resulting explosion of pressure did not stop him — it rebounded him. The water erupted upward in a column of white foam, and Kai launched himself back into the sky, soaking wet but unbroken.
The battle continued in the heavens.
Blow for blow. The serpent struck with its head, its tail, its venom. Kai answered with fists, knees, elbows — every weapon his body could provide. The sky around them became a war zone of shattered clouds, thunderous shockwaves, and arcs of purple venom that sizzled through the air.
---
The Mid-Air Duel
Kai hung motionless in the open sky, far above the cloud layer, his body tilted slightly forward as the colossal serpent coiled beneath him. The air trembled as the snake lifted its head — larger than entire valleys — its jaws spreading wide enough to swallow mountain peaks whole. Instead of retreating, Kai raised one leg high, muscles tightening like coiled steel. Then he kicked downward into empty air.
The moment his foot struck, the atmosphere cracked like glass. A thunderous boom exploded outward as a circular shockwave spread for kilometers.
Using the shattered air as footing, Kai launched himself forward at terrifying speed, skipping across invisible pressure points he created with each step. Each kick left behind ruptured rings in the sky, stacked like broken halos. The serpent reacted instantly, swinging its head sideways like a moving continent. Kai raced along the arc of its movement, his body weaving through violent wind tunnels created by the serpent's motion, closing the impossible distance between a human and something the size of mountain chains.
The serpent lunged upward, jaws snapping shut with a force that compressed the surrounding clouds into violent spirals. The bite was so massive that the air itself was dragged inward, forming a temporary vacuum that pulled rain, mist, and scattered debris toward its maw. Kai sensed the pull and pivoted midair, twisting his body sideways as he drove both feet into the air behind him, shattering it into another explosive foothold. The impact propelled him directly toward the closing jaws instead of away from them.
At the last instant before the fangs collided, Kai thrust both palms forward and slammed them against one of the serpent's descending fangs. The difference in scale was absurd — his entire body smaller than the tip of the fang — yet his strike detonated like a meteor impact. A shockwave erupted from the contact point, halting the bite mid-closure. The serpent's massive head jerked sideways from the counterforce, sending ripples down its body that traveled across its mountain-length coils like earthquakes racing across land.
Kai planted one foot against nothing but open sky, his leg trembling as he compressed the air beneath it again and again in rapid pulses. Each micro-impact produced small bursts of thunder that stacked into a roaring pressure point beneath him. The serpent sensed the rising disturbance and swung a massive coil upward, the movement bending entire cloud layers into curved walls that surged toward Kai like tidal waves of mist.
At the exact moment the serpent's coil reached striking range, Kai slammed his heel downward with brutal force. The air beneath him detonated into a massive expanding dome of pressure that collided directly with the rising coil. The impact did not pierce the serpent's body but forced its enormous mass to recoil, sending shockwaves rippling across its scales like earthquakes rolling along mountain ridges. The rebound pushed Kai backward through the air, while the serpent's coil shuddered and twisted, destabilized by the sudden counterforce.
The serpent lashed forward with its tail, the strike spanning distances equal to entire valleys. The tail cut through the atmosphere so violently that the air behind it tore into long spiraling tunnels, roaring like hurricanes born in seconds. Kai pivoted sideways, kicking off the air to move along the incoming arc instead of retreating from it.
As the tail passed beneath him, Kai twisted his torso and drove his arm downward in a hooking motion, slamming his forearm into the serpent's passing scales. The difference in size was enormous, yet the strike detonated like thunder striking stone. A burst of compressed air erupted outward from the point of impact, forcing the tail to veer slightly off its intended path. The redirected momentum created massive turbulence in the sky, causing swirling cloud columns to tear apart as the serpent's tail recoiled from the sudden resistance.
The serpent suddenly thrust its head upward, jaws partially open, attempting to ram Kai with sheer mass rather than biting. The motion dragged an enormous column of air upward with it, creating violent updrafts that threatened to toss anything nearby into chaotic spirals. Kai leaned forward into the rising wind, stomping the air repeatedly to stabilize himself against the massive current.
As the serpent's head closed the distance, Kai launched forward in a straight burst, driving both feet into the air behind him to accelerate. He pulled one knee upward, focusing all momentum into a single descending strike. His knee collided with the serpent's armored head scales, releasing a circular shockwave that burst outward like a ring of thunder. The serpent's head jerked slightly downward from the impact, its ascent interrupted as ripples of force traveled along its massive skull, disturbing the stability of its towering posture.
Without warning, the serpent twisted its colossal body into a spiraling formation, rotating so fast that entire rings of clouds began circling around it. The spinning mass generated a violent cyclone, winds screaming outward in all directions. Kai was dragged into the rotating current, his body pulled toward the center where the serpent's coils tightened like crushing walls of living stone.
Instead of resisting directly, Kai allowed himself to be pulled inward briefly. Then he kicked violently against the rushing air, striking it in rapid succession to create temporary footholds within the spinning storm. Using these unstable steps, he surged forward and slammed both fists downward into the outer edge of the rotating coil. The twin impacts exploded outward into overlapping shockwaves that disrupted the serpent's rotational rhythm. The cyclone stuttered, its winds faltering as sections of the massive coil rippled unevenly under the force of Kai's strikes.
The serpent lunged with sudden precision, snapping its jaws shut in a sideways biting motion meant to crush through sheer closing force. The enormous fangs sliced through the air like falling cliffs, dragging shockwaves behind them that distorted the clouds into jagged fragments. Kai darted toward the closing jaws instead of away, using short explosive kicks against the air to accelerate into the narrowing gap.
At the final instant before the jaws closed completely, Kai slammed both palms outward against the inner surfaces of the serpent's upper and lower jaws. His strike unleashed a violent pressure burst that spread along the massive bone structures like a shock traveling through stone. The jaws snapped shut — but not cleanly. The force of Kai's impact slightly misaligned the closure, causing the serpent's head to twist sideways from its own momentum. The sky around them erupted into chaotic wind bursts as the serpent recoiled from the disrupted strike.
The sky had already become a battlefield of broken clouds and roaring winds, but now it trembled with something heavier — anticipation. Kai hovered in open air, his body steady despite the violent storms raging around him. Far below, the ocean reflected flashes of lightning born from the serpent's convulsions. The serpent's colossal body stretched across the heavens, its coils layered like entire mountain ranges stacked together. Its tail swept through the sky in enormous arcs, each swing powerful enough to shred entire cloud formations into long streaming ribbons.
Kai raised his right arm slowly, holding it straight at his side. His fingers aligned tightly, his palm flattened, the edge of his hand becoming rigid like a forged blade. Every muscle from his shoulder down to his fingertips tightened, compressing power into a single line of motion. The air around his arm began to tremble under the pressure, faint cracks forming in the atmosphere as if reality itself struggled to withstand the focused force gathering there.
The serpent lashed its tail toward him with devastating speed, the massive structure roaring forward like an entire mountain range collapsing sideways. The wind pressure alone tore through surrounding clouds, forming enormous shock funnels that rippled across the sky. Kai did not evade. Instead, he slammed his foot downward into empty air, detonating it into a thunderous shock platform. The explosion launched him forward at blinding speed, straight toward the oncoming tail.
The distance closed instantly.
Kai swung his arm downward.
Not wide. Not wild. A single, impossibly precise slicing motion — fast enough that the air could not move out of the way in time. The atmosphere split open along the path of his strike, leaving behind a razor-thin glowing fracture that stretched across the sky. When his hand connected with the serpent's tail, the impact released a slicing shockwave so sharp and focused that it raced across the tail's immense thickness like lightning tearing through stone.
For a heartbeat, everything froze.
Then the severance completed.
The serpent's tail split entirely apart along the strike line. The colossal severed section tore free from the body, separating with explosive force. The detached mass — large enough to rival mountain chains — spun violently through the sky, tumbling downward while trailing spiraling shockwaves that shredded clouds across enormous distances.
The serpent erupted into violent convulsions.
Its remaining body twisted uncontrollably, its balance completely destroyed. Massive coils whipped through the air in chaotic motion, sending thunderous vibrations through the atmosphere. The sky roared with the aftermath; the loss of its tail threw the creature into disarray.
Kai did not watch it fall.
Using the recoil from the severing strike, Kai slammed both feet into the air repeatedly, each step breaking the atmosphere into explosive rings. He launched himself higher — faster — farther than ever before. Cloud layers collapsed beneath him as he climbed, rising far above the serpent's towering head until the creature looked small beneath his descending shadow.
Then he stopped.
Perfectly positioned above the serpent's skull, Kai hung alone in thinning air where the wind screamed in sharp, cutting currents. Below him, the serpent thrashed violently, its massive body writhing in agony after losing its tail. Without that massive counterweight, its movement became unstable — each twist heavier, slower, more desperate. Yet its head still rose, defiant, its enormous jaws opening wide as it roared upward toward the small human figure suspended above it.
Kai pulled his arm back.
Slowly.
Every muscle in his body compressed inward, gathering strength into a single point. His fist tightened until the air around it began to ripple visibly, layers of atmosphere trembling from the force being concentrated there. The clouds below swirled violently, dragged into spiraling rings by the pressure radiating from his descending path — even before he began to move.
Then —
He kicked downward.
The air beneath his foot exploded in the largest atmospheric rupture yet. The shockwave blasted outward like a circular wall, launching Kai into a vertical descent so fast that the sky screamed around him. He fell like a living meteor, his body cutting through layers of cloud in a straight burning line. The friction of his speed ignited the compressed air around him, leaving a glowing streak trailing behind his descent.
The serpent lifted its head, jaws spreading wide, roaring into the oncoming strike. The sound shook the sky itself, clouds ripping apart under the vibration. But it was too late.
Kai drove forward.
His fist slammed into the crown of the serpent's skull with unstoppable force.
The instant of contact unleashed a catastrophic explosion of pressure that spread outward in every direction. The sky fractured into massive expanding rings of compressed air, flattening entire cloud fields into enormous circular shock patterns that stretched across the horizon.
But the true destruction happened inside.
The force of Kai's strike drove downward through the serpent's skull like a seismic shock tearing through bedrock. The impact did not stop at the surface — it traveled through the creature's internal structure, sending violent shockwaves along its immense skeletal frame. Massive ripples surged down its length, joints buckling under the transmitted force.
A chain reaction began.
Sections of the serpent's structure failed one after another under the cascading pressure. Its colossal body jerked violently as the force spread, its stability collapsing across its enormous length. The serpent convulsed midair, its movements losing coordination as its entire frame shuddered from the internal devastation.
The sky roared with thunder as the creature's towering form began to collapse.
Its head dipped.
Its coils slackened.
Its massive body trembled uncontrollably, unable to hold itself together after the catastrophic blow.
Kai remained suspended above the fading shockwave, his arm still extended downward, surrounded by drifting fragments of cloud and lingering rings of pressure that expanded across the heavens.
The battle ended in the echo of that final strike —
a single blow powerful enough to bring down a creature the size of mountains.
