Chapter 2 - The First Shirt

CHAPTER FOUR: THE FIRST SHIFT

"I'll see you again."

His voice lingered even after I turned away.

I didn't respond.

I didn't need to.

Because I already knew he would.

That was how it started before.

And that was exactly how it would start again.

I stepped into the crowd, blending in with the noise and laughter. The air smelled of expensive perfume and quiet arrogance. Everyone here believed they were untouchable.

Just like him.

Just like her.

A flicker hit me—

Rain. Cold marble. Blood pooling beneath me.

My breath tightened for a second.

I stopped walking.

Not again.

I exhaled slowly, forcing the image away.

Focus on now.

Not then.

I continued walking, my heels clicking softly against the polished floor. Conversations drifted around me—business deals, fake compliments, shallow laughter.

Then I saw her.

My best friend.

She stood near the center, laughing lightly, her hand resting on someone's arm as if she belonged there.

Like she hadn't once stood behind me as I died.

My chest tightened sharply.

A flash—

Her laughter behind me. His silence. My last breath.

My fingers curled slowly.

Control it.

This is not the time.

I walked past her.

Deliberately.

Without stopping.

Without acknowledging her.

But I felt it.

Her gaze following me.

Confused.

Suspicious.

Good.

Let her feel it.

Let her notice the change.

Across the hall, I felt it again.

His gaze.

Sharp.

Focused.

Watching me like I was something he needed to understand.

I turned slightly and met his eyes.

Just for a second.

Then I looked away.

No warmth.

No invitation.

Only distance.

That single moment was enough.

I could feel it.

The shift.

The beginning.

This time…

I wouldn't fall first.

END OF CHAPTER FOUR

She didn't avoid him… she made him follow.

CHAPTER FIVE: HE STARTS TO NOTICE

He didn't wait long.

Of course he didn't.

He never did.

"You avoided me."

His voice came from behind me.

Calm.

Confident.

Certain.

I turned slowly.

"I didn't," I replied.

My tone was neutral.

Too neutral.

And he noticed.

A faint crease appeared between his brows.

"You left without saying anything."

"I wasn't aware I owed you that," I said lightly.

A pause.

Not long.

But enough.

He stepped closer.

Close enough that I could feel his presence without touching him.

"You're not like the others here."

His gaze didn't leave my face.

Studying.

Measuring.

Trying to understand.

A flash hit—

His hand gripping my wrist tightly. His voice low and cold. "Don't test my patience."

I pushed it away instantly.

Not here.

Not now.

"I get that a lot," I said calmly.

His lips curved slightly.

Not fully amused.

But interested.

And that was worse.

Later, she approached me.

"Hey!"

Her voice was warm.

Too warm.

Fake.

I turned toward her.

Smiled lightly.

Like I used to.

"You look different today," she said, studying me closely.

Her eyes were sharp.

Always had been.

I just didn't notice before.

A flash—

Her voice laughing behind me as I bled out.

I swallowed it.

Forced it down.

"People change," I said simply.

Her smile faltered for a second.

Then returned.

But I saw it.

The crack.

"You didn't tell me you'd be here," she added.

"Neither did you," I replied.

Soft.

But pointed.

Silence stretched briefly between us.

Not comfortable.

Not friendly.

Different.

Good.

Let her feel it.

Let her question everything.

Because this time…

I'm not the one being deceived.

END OF CHAPTER FIVE

She thought she knew her best friend… but this time, the stranger is her.

CHAPTER SIX: THE INVITATION

The invitation came that night.

Exactly like before.

Same envelope.

Same handwriting.

Same trap.

I stared at it for a long moment.

My fingers hovered over the paper.

A flash—

Candlelight. His eyes. A promise that led to betrayal.

My chest tightened slightly.

Not this time.

I opened it.

A private dinner.

From him.

Of course.

At the restaurant, everything was the same.

Dim lighting.

Soft music.

Controlled atmosphere.

He was already there.

Waiting.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would," I replied.

Truth.

But not the one he thought.

We sat across from each other.

Silence stretched briefly.

But it wasn't empty.

It was filled with tension.

Unspoken questions.

Unclear intentions.

"You accepted too easily," he said.

I tilted my head slightly.

"Should I have refused?"

He studied me carefully.

"Yes."

A small pause.

Then—

"Most people try to impress me," he added. "You don't."

A flash—

Me smiling nervously. Trying too hard. Falling too fast.

Disgust rose in my chest.

At myself.

At the past.

"I'm not most people," I said quietly.

His gaze sharpened.

"You feel familiar," he said again.

There it was.

My breath paused.

A flash—

Rain. Blood. His cold eyes.

I smiled faintly.

"You just have a good memory for faces."

Lie.

Clean.

Controlled.

He didn't look convinced.

Good.

Let him question.

Let him wonder.

Because confusion is where control begins.

END OF CHAPTER SIX

He thinks he's getting closer… but she's already three steps ahead.
