Chapter 99 - Five Years

The week before the speech, he took stock.

Not deliberately. Not with a list — he had been making fewer lists lately, or rather making them and leaving them unfinished, which was its own kind of progress. He took stock the way you took stock when something significant was approaching and your mind did it automatically, assembling the picture of where things were.

The designation framework had been law for eighteen months.

Two hundred and fourteen companies across six sectors. The number updated weekly now — Priya maintained the count, which she had added to her reporting structure without being asked, which Seren had noted and not commented on because it was exactly right.

The pregnancy accommodation framework was in its first year of voluntary adoption. Forty-seven pilot companies had become ninety-three. The regulatory consultation for mandatory adoption was twelve months away.

He had written the initial case for it.

Three other people were leading it now.
