Chapter 2 - Life really sucks!

"As I call your name, come one by one and place your hand in the crystal. When your potential is revealed, you may go back to your place."

"Now, number one Arnold Segar."

A tall and muscular student walked to the stage.

"Now place your hand on the crystal."

He hesitantly placed his hand. In just a few seconds the crystal started emitting a yellow color.

"Mmm, you are a 'C' level potential. Next." The old man said without giving a second glance.

One after another student got awakened; Zac and Marty were still waiting for their turns.

'Marty Williams"

"Guess it's my turn; wish me luck." Saying that to Zac, Marty stepped onto the stage.

The crystal took a few extra seconds for him, but finally the light was emitted.

"Blue…it's really blue."

"Oh my god, how can that walking cupcake have 'A' level potential?"

The old man looked at Marty. "Good, you have a great future; work hard."

"Thank you, sir." Marty bowed to him and went down the stage.

"See that yours truly has an 'A' level potential; what do you think about that?" he said with a smile.

But Zac replied plainly, "Good for you."

At this point Marty does not know what he has to do to make Zac smile.

"Next, Peter Ritchie."

Zac's body trembled hearing the name. A tall and handsome young man walked onto the stage with an arrogant expression.

It was the same boy Zac saw inside the classroom.

This time the crystal took more time than before; finally, blue light was emitted from it.

The old man looked at him and asked, "You are from the Ritchie family, right?"

"Yes."

"Good, your father must be proud; now go."

Once again the cycle continued.

When Lily stepped on the stage. Marty tried to tease Zac, but the reaction he got from him was something he had never seen before.

"Did something happen between them?" he thought.

Finally, it was Zac's turn. Since his name starts with 'Z,' he is the last one.

"Zac Godson"

Hearing the name, Zac stepped onto the stage and placed his hand on the crystal.

He felt a strong wave of energy passing through all over his body, reaching every cell in it.

After a few seconds the energy went back to the crystal.

Time slowly passed, but there is no reaction from the crystal.

The atmosphere became even more tense.

Zac is famous around the school for being the number one student and dating the school belle.

Till now, the longer the crystal takes, the higher the potential. So the crowd is eagerly waiting to see what Zac's results will be.

Finally, the crystal started changing color; first it was red, then it changed to orange, and then yellow.

When it reached violet, the crowd went into an uproar.

"It's violet."

"How can he have such a high potential?"

"He's going to soar into the sky."

Even the teachers and principal showed strong reactions.

The principal even expressed his happiness by saying, "It's a blessing; our school is finally producing an 'S' level awakening."

But to everyone's surprise, the crystal didn't stop there; it once again changed from violet to gold.

The students and the teachers became confused seeing it, but the old man from the awakened association stood up in surprise.

"How can it be an 'SS' level talent, that too in a rundown place like this?"

The crystal again changed from gold to pure white in color.

The old man became terrified and went to the crystal to check if the crystal was somehow malfunctioning.

He couldn't believe the results even though he is seeing them.

Zac became happy seeing this; for a moment he thought, "So what if you cheated me? Now I have high potential; I will make you regret your decision."

But suddenly all the light from the crystal stopped, and the color started reducing from white till it reached red.

Zac started panicking, "what is happening? Why is it suddenly reducing?"

People watching this also became confused.

The principal went near the old man and asked, "Sir, can you please explain the situation?"

The old man took a huge breath. "It seems his mana channels are the highest level that even I have ever seen; that's why the crystal reacted that way."

"As for his awakened class, it must be 'E' class; that's why it reduced to red color."

The happy faces of the teachers and the principal instantly dropped.

"Truly a pity; with mana channels that high, he would have been a great awakener with a good class."

The students instantly started murmuring.

"Ah…so that's what it is, ah."

"I thought I was going to see a miracle; what a pity."

"He may be academically good, but in the end he is also a loser."

Zac felt even the heavens were trolling him; all the confidence he gained just a moment ago left his face.

Marty from the crowd looked worried, seeing his friend.

He looked at the crowd and saw Lily giving him a disgusting face. While Peter holds her from the side with an arrogant expression.

Zac didn't say anything; he came down the stage and left the school.

For hours he wanders around the road like a dead man, thinking how he is going to break it down to his mother, who had high hopes for him.

Just when he thought there was nothing left to go wrong.

"Ring… Ring… Ring…"

Upon hearing what the other person said, he rushed to the hospital.

There he saw his sister standing near a room and whimpering.

"Carrie, what happened?"

Carrie rushed to him, grabbing his arm. Her body is trembling as she tries to speak.

"Brother…" she choked, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.

"It's Mom."

Zac patted her head. "Please, Carrie, can you stop crying and tell me what happened to Mom?"

"Wimp…wimp…when we were getting…wimp…home, she suddenly fell and lost consciousness…wimp."

Zac tried to console his sister; the door for the room opened, and the doctor came out and looked at Zac.

"Mr. Godson, can we have a moment, please?"

Zac left his sister and went to the doctor's room.

"What? My mom is mana-poisoned? But that's impossible."

"She does not work as an awakened being, so how can she be mana poisoned?" he retorted, hearing the doctor.

"The doctor calmly explained, "I don't know about that, but she is definitely mana poisoned."

"The only way to heal her is to buy a healing potion from the awakened association. It would be easy if you know someone in the association because they only sell it to their members."

"She only has a week of time to live, so try to get it before that."

Zac took his crying sister home and put her to sleep; he then went to his room and closed it shut.

Tears started pouring from his eyes; he knelt down on the floor and cried out loud.

"Why? Why? Why…?"

"Why is it happening to me?"

"I never smoked, used drugs, or bullied anyone."

"I have never done anything bad to anyone, so why is all this happening to me?"

"I loved her with all my heart. I tried to be the best I could for her. I thought we would be always together, so why did she cheat on me?"

"I thought I could change my family for the better if I awakened a good class, but why does it have to be an 'E' level one?"

"My mom sacrificed her entire life for the well-being of me and my sister, and now she is dying, and I'm unable to do anything about it."

"What kind of son am I?"

"Is being good to everyone really a sin?"

All the stocked-up pain in his heart came out together and made him overwhelmed.

He cried while cursing and berating himself for what happened.

After crying for who knows how long, he lost consciousness and fell on to the floor.
