Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10:The First Step Out of the Cage

The morning arrived with tension already in the air.

Kevin felt it before he even opened his eyes.

Something had changed.

Not in the village.

Not in the dojo.

But in the way people looked at him.

"…It's getting worse."

He sat up slowly.

His new sword rested beside him.

Simple.

Reliable.

Real.

Unlike the wooden practice blades of the past.

Outside, voices murmured.

Not loud enough to clearly hear—

But enough to know:

He was being discussed.

Kevin exhaled.

"…So they decided."

He walked into the training yard.

Shimotsuki Kuina was already there.

Sword drawn.

Waiting.

"You're late," she said.

"…I didn't oversleep."

Kuina tilted her head slightly.

"…You feel it too."

Kevin didn't deny it.

"…Yeah."

The air between them was different today.

Heavier.

More serious.

Not just training anymore.

Something was ending.

Something else beginning.

Clang!

They clashed immediately.

No warm-up.

No hesitation.

Kevin moved forward—

Controlled aggression.

Kuina met him head-on.

Steel rang out.

Again.

Again.

Kevin shifted his stance—

Then pressed in.

Clang!

Kuina blocked—but stepped back half a step.

"…You're faster."

Kevin exhaled.

"…You're still stronger."

Clang!

Another exchange.

This time—

Kevin didn't retreat.

He pushed through the pressure.

For a split second—

He broke Kuina's rhythm.

"…!"

But she recovered instantly.

And knocked him back.

Thud.

Kevin slid across the ground.

Silence.

Kuina lowered her blade slightly.

"…You almost had it."

Kevin stood up slowly.

Dust on his clothes.

Breathing steady.

"…Almost isn't enough."

Kuina smirked faintly.

"…You're finally understanding that."

From the edge of the yard—

A shadow appeared.

Koushirou.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes were not.

"…Kevin."

Kevin turned.

"…Sensei."

Koushirou stepped forward.

"I've received a request."

Kuina frowned slightly.

"…Request?"

Koushirou nodded.

"A merchant caravan needs escort to the next port."

Kevin blinked.

"…Escort?"

"Yes."

Koushirou's gaze settled on Kevin.

"And you will go."

Silence.

Kuina raised an eyebrow.

"…Why him?"

Koushirou answered calmly.

"Because he needs experience outside this village."

Then added—

"And because staying here will no longer be safe."

Kevin understood immediately.

"…The Marine."

Koushirou didn't deny it.

Kuina crossed her arms.

"…I'm going too."

Koushirou shook his head.

"Not this time."

Kuina frowned deeper.

"…That's unfair."

Kevin looked at her.

"…It's fine."

Kuina turned sharply.

"…It's not."

Kevin smirked slightly.

"…I'll come back."

Kuina studied him.

Long.

Quiet.

"…Don't die."

Kevin nodded once.

"…I won't."

That was enough.

Not reassurance.

Not comfort.

Just understanding.

Later that day—

Kevin stood at the village gate.

A small caravan waited.

Simple carts.

Few guards.

Merchant nervous but hopeful.

The leader looked at Kevin.

"…You're the escort?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Yeah."

The man hesitated.

"…You're just a kid."

Kevin met his eyes.

"…Still safer than nothing."

A pause.

Then—

"…Fair enough."

The caravan began moving.

Kevin walked beside it.

Silent.

Observant.

The village slowly faded behind them.

First time.

Leaving.

Not training.

Not sparring.

But the real world.

The road stretched ahead.

Uncertain.

Unforgiving.

And somewhere far behind—

A Marine report was being written.

"…Subject: Unknown anomaly."

"…Possible unnatural ability."

"…Recommend surveillance."

Kevin didn't know that yet.

But he would soon.

For now—

He simply walked forward.

Step by step.

Into the world that would either shape him…

Or break him.

The wind shifted slightly.

And for the first time—

Kevin didn't feel like he was just surviving.

He felt like he was moving.
