Chapter 4 - THE MAN WITH RED EYES

Over the next several days, as they traveled through the forest toward Tayar, Lucina began to understand the truth about her new life. Hakan was not just a king—he was a dragon of considerable power and ancient age. The men who served him were utterly devoted to him, treating him with a reverence that went beyond normal loyalty.

They traveled in a caravan, moving swiftly through the landscape. Lucina rode in a comfortable cart, driven by one of Hakan's men named Teron, who treated her with surprising gentleness. Each night, they would camp, and Hakan would come to spend time with her, sharing stories of his kingdom and his past.

But Lucina noticed something strange about him. His demeanor would shift slightly each time he came near her. His eyes would glow more brightly. His breathing would become heavier. It was as though her very presence affected him on a fundamental level.

One evening, as they sat by the campfire, Lucina finally gathered the courage to ask him directly.

"Why do you keep looking at me that way?" she asked quietly.

Hakan was startled by the question. For a moment, he seemed to struggle with how to answer. When he finally spoke, his voice was careful, thoughtful.

"When I look at you," he said slowly, "I see the girl who saved my life. But there is something else as well. When I first found you in the forest, bleeding and broken, I felt something I hadn't felt in many, many years." He paused, his eyes meeting hers. "I felt hope."

Lucina didn't know how to respond to that. Hope was such a fragile thing, and she had learned long ago not to rely on it.

"Tell me about your past," she said, trying to change the subject. "How did you become a dragon? How did you become a king?"

Hakan settled back, and his expression grew distant, as though he were remembering things both beautiful and terrible.

"I was born a dragon," he explained. "My father was the previous king of Tayar, and my older brother Raiken was meant to succeed him. I was always in my brother's shadow—he was stronger, braver, more suited to leadership. My father recognized this, and so did I. I accepted my place as the younger prince, knowing that I would serve my brother rather than rule over him."

"What happened?" Lucina asked.

"A war," Hakan said simply. "A man called the Dragon Slayer came to our lands with powerful weapons and ancient magic. He was hired by a neighboring kingdom to eliminate our race. We fought, and we fought hard. But the Dragon Slayer was extraordinarily skilled." His jaw clenched. "He killed my brother. He would have killed me as well, but Raiken... my brother threw himself in front of the arrow meant for me. He died protecting me."

Lucina reached out and gently placed her hand on his arm. She didn't speak—there were no words adequate for such loss.

"After that," Hakan continued, "I became king. Not because I wanted to, but because I was all that remained. My mother, the Queen, was devastated by my brother's death. She had always loved him more than me. She could barely look at me without seeing the son she had lost." He looked at Lucina, his expression vulnerable. "For ten years, I have worn the crown knowing that I am not the king my kingdom deserved. I am the king they got, when they should have had my brother."

"That's not fair to yourself," Lucina said softly. "You didn't choose to be born second. You didn't choose for your brother to sacrifice himself. Those were his choices, his sacrifices. That doesn't make you less worthy of the crown."

Hakan looked at her with surprise, as though he had never considered such a thing. "You're right," he said finally. "But knowing something intellectually and feeling it in your heart are two different things. I have spent ten years feeling like an imposter, like a fraud wearing a crown that belonged to someone greater."

"Until you met me?" Lucina asked gently.

"Until I met you," Hakan confirmed. "When you healed me in that forest, when I felt your power flowing into my body, it was as though... as though I was being reborn. For the first time in ten years, I felt worthy. I felt like perhaps I had something to live for beyond duty and obligation."

Lucina didn't know how to respond to such an admission. This man—this powerful king, this ancient dragon—was admitting vulnerability to her. He was revealing his deepest pain.

And somehow, despite everything that had happened to her, despite all the abuse and rejection she had suffered, she found that she wanted to comfort him.

"You are worthy," she said quietly. "I may have only known you for a few days, but I can see that you are a good man. Your people love you. That wouldn't be the case if you were unworthy."

Hakan reached out and gently took her hand. His skin was warm, almost hot to the touch. "When we reach Tayar," he said, "I want you to know that you will be treated as an honored guest. You will have your own chambers, your own servants. You will be given whatever you need or desire. You will never want for anything again."

"What about you?" Lucina asked. "What do you want?"

Hakan was silent for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. "What I want is to understand you. What I want is for you to trust me. What I want..." he paused, clearly struggling with his words, "what I want is for you to stay with me. Not as a guest, but as... as something more. As a partner. As someone I can share my burdens with."

Lucina felt her heart skip a beat. She barely knew this man. But she also knew that he had saved her when she was helpless. He had offered her protection when she had none. He had shown her kindness when the world had shown her only cruelty.

"I don't know what I feel," she admitted. "My life has been so filled with pain that I don't know how to process anything else. But I am willing to try. I am willing to give this—to give us—a chance."

Hakan smiled, and the relief in his expression was visible. "That is all I ask," he said. "That you give us a chance."

They sat together by the fire through the night, talking about their lives, their dreams, their fears. And for the first time since the night she had healed the dragon, Lucina felt something like happiness beginning to bloom in her chest.
