Chapter 18 - After the Storm

The silence that followed felt heavier than the fight itself.

The eastern sector slowly returned to stillness, but it was no longer the same kind of quiet. Something had changed.

Something had settled.

Aarav stood in the middle of the street, his breathing steady, his posture relaxed—but his eyes were still sharp.

"…It's over," Mira said quietly.

"…For now," Aarav replied.

The faint crack in the sky above remained, unchanged, watching over everything like a constant reminder.

Mira looked at him.

"…You need to explain."

Aarav glanced at her.

"…Explain what?"

"…That."

Her tone was calm—but firm.

"…What you did just now."

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"…I don't fully understand it myself."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the truth."

Silence.

Mira studied him carefully.

Not suspicious.

Not accusing.

But analyzing.

"…Your movement changed," she said.

"…How?"

"…Before, you were reacting."

She paused.

"…Now, you're deciding."

Aarav didn't reply immediately.

Because she wasn't wrong.

"…Maybe," he said.

Mira shook her head slightly.

"…No. Definitely."

She looked at the spot where the creature had fallen.

"…Even I couldn't follow that last movement."

Aarav smirked faintly.

"…That makes two of us."

But inside—

He understood one thing.

That wasn't the system.

That wasn't analysis.

That was—

Something else.

Something deeper.

The screen flickered faintly in front of him.

Quieter now.

Less aggressive.

"…At least you've calmed down," Aarav muttered.

Mira noticed the slight shift in his gaze.

"…It's still there, isn't it?"

"…Yeah."

"…Can you control it?"

Aarav thought for a moment.

"…Not exactly."

"That's not reassuring."

"…It's not meant to be."

Mira exhaled slowly.

"…You're dangerous."

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"…To who?"

Mira looked at him directly.

"…That's what I'm trying to figure out."

Before Aarav could respond—

A distant sound echoed through the street.

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Approaching.

Both of them turned.

"…Took them long enough," Aarav said.

Mira's expression hardened slightly.

"…They're not here for the monsters."

"…I know."

Figures appeared at the end of the street.

Not panicked.

Not rushed.

Calm.

Controlled.

The same group that had been watching.

Aarav's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So they finally decided to show up."

Mira stepped slightly forward.

"…Stay careful."

"…Always."

The group stopped a few meters away.

One of them stepped forward.

"…Aarav."

Aarav's expression didn't change.

"…You already know my name."

"…We know more than that."

A brief pause.

"…You've been causing irregularities."

Aarav smirked faintly.

"…That sounds like a problem."

"…It is."

Silence.

The air grew heavier again.

But this time—

It wasn't from the system.

It was from them.

"…Come with us," the man said calmly.

Mira stepped in slightly.

"…On what authority?"

The man didn't even look at her.

"…This doesn't concern you."

"…It does now."

Aarav raised a hand slightly.

"…Relax."

Mira frowned.

"…This isn't the time—"

"…It's fine."

Aarav stepped forward.

Calm.

Unbothered.

"…And if I say no?"

The man's gaze sharpened.

"…Then we make it necessary."

Silence.

Aarav smiled slightly.

"…Yeah."

"I thought so."

Because things were finally getting interesting.

And this time—

It wasn't just about monsters anymore.
