Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Devil's Dining Table

The Gremory mansion's interior was a sensory overload. Crystal chandeliers bathed the grand foyer in warm, golden light that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Marble floors reflected the glow like a dark mirror. Velvet drapes the color of deep wine framed towering windows that looked out upon the blood-red moon. Opulence on a scale Kaito had only ever dreamed of from anime screens.

He followed Rias down a long corridor, acutely aware of Kiba's watchful gaze drilling into his back and Koneko's silent, unnerving presence beside him. The petite girl walked without making a sound, occasionally popping another candy into her mouth with a soft click.

"So," Kiba said, his voice smooth but carrying an undercurrent of steel that could cut glass. "You took down a Stray Devil with a single punch. That's... unusual for a human with no apparent training."

Kaito shrugged, forcing nonchalance into his shoulders. "Beginner's luck? Adrenaline? Honestly, I just swung and hoped for the best."

Kiba's smile didn't waver, but his eyes sharpened. "Interesting. Most beginners don't aim for a magical core's fracture point on instinct. That's a technique that takes years to master."

Crap. He's a genius swordsman. Of course he'd notice. Kaito's mind raced. The System had highlighted the weak point, but he couldn't exactly explain that. "Guess I just have good instincts. Or maybe this Sacred Gear thing is giving me combat intuition."

[Alert: Kiba Yuuto's suspicion level increased slightly.]

[Recommendation: Divert attention or build rapport quickly.]

Before Kaito could formulate a better response, a new voice drifted down the hallway like warm honey laced with a hint of dangerous mischief.

"Ara, ara. Is this the mysterious, handsome guest I've been hearing about?"

Kaito turned and felt his breath catch in his throat.

A woman approached, her hips swaying with a natural, hypnotic grace that seemed to bend the very air around her. Long, black hair tied in a high ponytail cascaded down her back like liquid silk. Her violet eyes held a playful, almost predatory glint that promised both pleasure and pain. She wore a modified shrine maiden's outfit that left nothing to the imagination—the fabric hugged every dangerous curve, and a generous display of creamy cleavage was accentuated by the red ribbon tied beneath it. A warm, inviting smile played on her lips, but Kaito could sense the raw power radiating from her like a pleasant, crackling static charge.

Akeno Himejima. The Priestess of Thunder. The ultimate sadomasochistic queen of DxD.

[Alert: High-Value Target Detected.]

[Name: Akeno Himejima. Race: Fallen Angel/Devil Hybrid. Affection Level: 0 (Amused/Curious).]

[Potential Affection Bonus: This target responds positively to confidence and a tolerance for... teasing.]

"Akeno," Rias said with a fond smile. "Perfect timing. This is Kaito Kurosawa. He'll be joining us for dinner and staying as our guest for the foreseeable future."

Akeno's violet eyes swept over Kaito from head to toe, lingering for just a moment too long on his shoulders and then his eyes. "Oh my. Rias, you've brought home quite the delicious one this time." She stepped closer, and Kaito caught a whiff of her perfume—cherry blossoms and something darker, more electric, like the air before a thunderstorm. "And he defeated a Stray Devil bare-handed? How... exciting."

She reached out and gently brushed a speck of dust off Kaito's shoulder. Her fingers lingered, and a tiny, pleasant static shock jumped between them. Kaito flinched involuntarily, a shiver running down his spine.

"Ara, forgive me," Akeno giggled, her eyes sparkling with delight. "I seem to be a little... charged tonight. You're not afraid of a little shock, are you, Kaito-kun?"

Kaito met her gaze and forced a confident grin. "I've survived death today. A little static electricity isn't going to scare me off."

Akeno's smile widened, a genuine flash of approval crossing her features. "Ara, ara. Confident. I like that."

[Affection Update: Akeno Himejima +10. (Current: 10/100 - Entertained).]

The dining hall was immense. A long, polished mahogany table dominated the center, surrounded by high-backed chairs upholstered in crimson velvet. Candles floated in mid-air, their flames burning with a soft, magical light that cast dancing shadows on the walls. Platters of food—roasted meats glistening with juices, exotic fruits in colors Kaito couldn't name, steaming bread that smelled like heaven, and dishes he didn't even recognize—covered the table in a lavish spread fit for royalty.

Rias took her seat at the head of the table with the natural grace of a queen. "Please, Kaito. Sit. Eat. You're our guest."

Kaito sat, and immediately Akeno slid into the chair directly beside him, closer than strictly necessary. Her thigh brushed against his under the table, and she made no move to pull away. Kiba sat across from them, his posture perfect and watchful. Koneko sat further down, already piling her plate with an alarming amount of food despite her small frame.

"So, Kaito-kun," Rias began, elegantly cutting into a piece of meat. "Tell me about this power of yours. When I scanned you in the garden, my magic registered the presence of a Sacred Gear. Yet, I couldn't identify its type or origin. It was almost as if it was... hiding from me."

All eyes turned to Kaito. The weight of their attention was palpable, pressing down on him.

[Quest Update: "A Devil's Hospitality."]

Sub-Objective: Explain your powers without revealing the System.

Kaito took a bite of bread to buy himself a second. "To be honest, Miss Gremory—Rias," he corrected himself, earning a small smile from her. "I don't fully understand it myself. I was a normal human until a few hours ago. Then I died—or almost died—and woke up here with this... thing inside me." He tapped his chest. "The power just kind of... tells me things. Like where to hit an enemy. And it makes me stronger. Faster. It's like having a combat tutor in my head."

Rias's blue-green eyes gleamed with fascination. "It tells you things? Fascinating. A sentient-type Sacred Gear, perhaps. I've heard of such artifacts—they bond with the user's soul and provide guidance. The Boosted Gear of the Red Dragon Emperor is one such example."

Kiba leaned forward, his silver hair catching the candlelight. "Boosted Gear doubles the user's power every ten seconds. Yours seems to provide analytical data and physical enhancement. Different, but potentially just as formidable if nurtured correctly."

"Indeed," Rias agreed. "A sentient Sacred Gear that actively conceals itself from external scans... it must be a Longinus-class, or something entirely new. A unique existence." She smiled, and Kaito felt a chill run down his spine that had nothing to do with fear. "You are a treasure, Kaito Kurosawa."

[Affection Update: Rias Gremory +15. (Current: 40/100 - Greatly Intrigued).]

A treasure? More like a walking cheat code with a built-in wingman, Kaito thought. But he kept his expression grateful. "I'm just trying to figure things out as I go."

Akeno leaned in, her shoulder pressing against his. Her breath was warm against his ear as she whispered, "If you ever need help... figuring things out, Kaito-kun, I'd be more than happy to assist. I'm quite skilled at... unlocking hidden potential." Another tiny static shock made the hairs on his arm stand up, and her violet eyes sparkled with mischief. "Day or night."

[Affection Update: Akeno Himejima +10. (Current: 20/100 - Interested).]

Kaito swallowed hard. Stay calm. You knew this was coming. The harem route is real, and it's actively trying to short-circuit your brain.

Koneko paused her relentless consumption to stare at Kaito with her unblinking golden eyes. "...He's weird. But strong. Can he cook?"

The sudden non-sequitur shattered the tension like a hammer through glass. Rias laughed, a genuine, melodic sound that filled the hall. "Koneko, I believe that's your highest form of praise."

Kaito grinned at the petite girl, grateful for the lifeline. "I can make a mean omelet, if that helps."

Koneko's eyes widened just a fraction—a seismic reaction by her standards. "...Omelet. Fluffy? With rice?"

"Fluffy, with rice, and maybe some ketchup art on top," Kaito promised.

Koneko stared at him for a long, intense moment. Then she nodded once, solemnly. "...Acceptable. Tomorrow. Breakfast. Don't forget." She returned to her mountain of food with renewed vigor.

[Affection Update: Koneko Toujou +10. (Current: 15/100 - Omelet Pact Sealed).]

[New Sub-Quest Unlocked: "Koneko's First Omelet."]

Objective: Cook a perfect fluffy omelet with rice for Koneko's breakfast.

Reward: 200 XP, Koneko Affection +20, ??? Skill Unlock.

Failure: Koneko Disappointment (-30 Affection). No one wants that.

As the meal progressed, Kaito decided to test his unique trait. He caught Rias's gaze across the table and held it. Three seconds.

[Protagonist's Gaze Activated.]

[Target: Rias Gremory.]

[Hidden Desire/Weakness Detected: "Freedom from the Cage of Nobility." Deep down, Rias desires a genuine connection untainted by politics and a partner who sees her as Rias, not the Gremory Heiress. She longs for someone who will fight for her, not because of her name.]

Kaito's heart ached. He knew this from the lore, but seeing it confirmed by the System made it viscerally real. She was surrounded by power and luxury, yet felt trapped by expectations. He looked away before she noticed his staring.

Then, he glanced at Akeno, who was pouring him a cup of tea with deliberate slowness, her violet eyes watching his reaction with undisguised amusement. Three seconds.

[Protagonist's Gaze Activated.]

[Target: Akeno Himejima.]

[Hidden Desire/Weakness Detected: "Acceptance of Her Whole Self." Akeno despises her Fallen Angel heritage, believing it makes her impure and unworthy. She longs for someone who can embrace both the holy and unholy sides of her nature—someone who won't flinch when she reveals her dark wings.]

This is heavy, Kaito thought. Knowing their deepest insecurities is a huge responsibility. And the ultimate key to their hearts.

"So, Kaito-kun," Rias said, setting down her fork with a soft clink. "I have a proposition for you. You are currently a guest, but this world—the Underworld—is dangerous for an unaffiliated human with a powerful, unidentified Sacred Gear. There are factions who would seek to capture, control, or eliminate you. The Fallen Angels, rogue devils, even elements within the Church."

Kaito nodded slowly. He knew this too.

"I would like to offer you a place within my household," Rias continued. "Not as a servant, but as a resident under my direct protection. In return, you would help us with certain... tasks. Stray Devil extermination, for instance. You've already proven capable." Her smile turned slightly sly. "Think of it as an extended, all-expenses-paid stay in a luxurious mansion, with the occasional monster hunt and... interesting company."

[Quest Update: New Opportunity Detected.]

[Rias Gremory has extended an offer of residence and informal alliance.]

[Accept: Unlock consistent XP opportunities, deepen relationships with peerage members, gain access to Underworld resources and training.]

[Decline: Remain a vulnerable outsider. High risk of encountering hostile factions alone. Likely death or worse.]

The choice was obvious. "I accept, Rias. Thank you for your hospitality."

"Excellent!" Rias clapped her hands together, her crimson hair shimmering. "And please, call me Buchou. We're going to be living together, after all. It feels more... familial."

"Buchou," Kaito repeated, and the word felt right.

Rias's smile widened, a genuine warmth reaching her eyes that transformed her from a stunning devil princess into something more approachable, more real. "I like the sound of that."

[Affection Update: Rias Gremory +25. (Current: 65/100 - Trusted Guest).]

[Milestone Reached: First Nickname (Buchou).]

[Reward: 300 XP. Skill Fragment: "Mana Sense (Basic)" acquired.]

[Level Up! User is now Level 3. All stats increased by 5%.]

Suddenly, Kaito felt a subtle shift in his perception. The world around him seemed to breathe. He could faintly sense the magical energy emanating from everyone—Rias's warm, crimson glow like a comforting fire; Akeno's crackling violet and white aura that tingled against his senses; Kiba's sharp, silver sheen like a drawn blade; and Koneko's dense, golden pressure like a sleeping volcano. It was overwhelming and exhilarating.

"Whoa," he breathed, rubbing his temples as the sensations flooded in.

"Are you alright?" Kiba asked, his tone carrying a hint of genuine concern for the first time.

"Yeah, just... my Gear is adapting. I can suddenly feel everyone's mana. It's intense."

Rias nodded approvingly. "Your Sacred Gear is evolving rapidly. That's an excellent sign. It means it's bonding well with your soul."

As the dinner wound down, Rias stood gracefully. "Kiba, please show Kaito to his room in the east wing. Tomorrow, we'll begin his orientation. There's much to learn about the Underworld—and about us."

"Of course, Buchou," Kiba said.

Akeno rose as well, stretching languidly in a way that made Kaito quickly avert his eyes. Her shrine maiden outfit rode up dangerously. "Sleep well, Kaito-kun. If you get lonely in that big, empty wing... my room is just down the hall. Third door on the left." She winked and sauntered away, her hips swaying hypnotically. "Sweet dreams."

[Affection Update: Akeno Himejima +5. (Current: 25/100 - Bold Teasing).]

Koneko stood, her plate miraculously clean. She walked up to Kaito and stared up at him with her golden eyes. "...Omelet. Fluffy. Rice. Ketchup art. Tomorrow. Don't be late." She poked his stomach with one tiny finger. "...Or else."

She padded away silently, leaving Kaito both amused and slightly terrified.

Kiba led Kaito through the mansion's winding corridors. "You handled yourself well tonight. Buchou seems quite taken with you. Akeno-san too."

"She's been very kind," Kaito replied carefully.

"Rias-buchou is kind to everyone," Kiba said, his voice neutral but carrying weight. "But I've never seen her so... animated by a newcomer. Her eyes were sparkling. And Akeno-san doesn't tease just anyone—she only invests her attention in people she finds genuinely interesting." He paused, his sharp gaze meeting Kaito's. "Be careful, Kaito. This world will test you in ways you can't imagine. And if you hurt her, or anyone in this household, I won't forgive you."

Kaito met Kiba's gaze steadily. "I understand. And I have no intention of hurting anyone here. I want to protect them, if I can."

Kiba studied him for a long, searching moment. Then his expression softened into a genuine, warm smile. "Good. Then we'll get along just fine. Welcome to the family, Kaito."

[Affection Update: Kiba Yuuto +15. (Current: 25/100 - Cautious Ally).]

They stopped before a grand oak door. "Your room. It has a private bath and a view of the eastern gardens. If you need anything, use the communication circle on the desk. Sleep well."

Kaito stepped inside. The room was enormous, with a king-sized bed draped in silk sheets, rich furnishings, and a window overlooking the silver-leafed forest. It was more luxurious than any place he'd ever lived.

"Thanks, Kiba."

Kiba nodded and closed the door behind him.

Alone at last, Kaito collapsed onto the bed, staring at the ornate ceiling. The System interface glowed softly in his vision.

Kaito grinned into the darkness. "Cook an omelet, learn about devils, survive Akeno's flirting, and figure out how to use Mana Sense without getting a headache. Just another Tuesday in the Underworld."

He closed his eyes, the faint hum of mana all around him lulling him toward sleep. The bed was impossibly comfortable. His new life had officially begun.

And then, just as consciousness began to slip away, a new notification flickered—not in the familiar, friendly blue, but in a deep, ominous crimson.

[ALERT: Anomalous Energy Signature Detected.]

[Source: Approaching Gremory Estate perimeter at high velocity.]

[Threat Level: Unknown. Signature does not match any known Devil, Fallen Angel, or Church database.]

[Recommendation: Prepare for potential hostile contact.]

[ETA: Approximately 10 hours.]

[WARNING: The System advises caution. This entity's presence was not part of original world-line calculations.]

Kaito's eyes snapped open. His heart hammered against his ribs. The crimson text pulsed in his vision like a heartbeat of doom.

Something is coming. Something that shouldn't exist here. And it's arriving at dawn.

He stared at the ceiling, sleep now a distant memory. The first rays of sunlight—or whatever passed for it in the Underworld—would bring more than just an omelet. They would bring the unknown.

And somewhere down the hall, he could have sworn he heard Akeno's soft, melodic laughter. But this time, it sounded... different. Almost knowing.
