"Why did you light everyone in gold?" Sterling asked, voice still clipped.
"I couldn't c-c-control it," she replied, hurt laced under the upset that was already there.
The stutter gutted something in Maddox's chest that he was fairly certain would require surgery to repair. She was defending herself against his officer for a flame that Maddox had called out of her on a dance floor.
"You are an absolute jackass," Blair snapped. "Gwen, as soon as you can control it, please light him on fire."
"It was a fair question," Sterling shot back. "Does it magically shut off on its own too?"
His Third in Command, the finest strategic mind in his military outside of Ryker, was being sarcastic. To a crying woman. About magic she didn't understand. The man had a death wish.
