Chapter 10 - System Collapse

The room was quiet again.

But it was not the same kind of quiet as before.

It felt fragile.

Like reality was holding itself together with effort.

Kairo Vance sat on his bed, staring at his hands.

Nothing was happening.

No system screen.

No shadow distortion.

No whisper.

But that was what made it worse.

"…It's too quiet," he muttered.

His shadow stretched on the floor.

Normal.

Stable.

Obedient.

But Kairo no longer trusted it.

Not after everything.

He stood up slowly.

"…Show me."

No response.

He narrowed his eyes.

"…System."

Nothing.

Silence.

Then—

A flicker.

Weak.

Broken.

[System Reconnection Attempting…]

Kairo's eyes sharpened.

"…Finally."

But before he could finish—

The system screen distorted violently.

The air in the room twisted.

Then—

[ERROR]

Core synchronization failed

Kairo froze.

"…Failed?"

The system flickered again.

Harder this time.

[WARNING]

Dual relic interference exceeding containment threshold

The room temperature dropped instantly.

Kairo stepped back.

"…Containment?"

Suddenly—

His shadow reacted.

Not slightly.

Not subtly.

Violently.

It expanded across the entire floor in a single instant.

Kairo's eyes widened.

"…What are you doing?"

The shadow did not respond.

It rose.

Like liquid darkness standing upright.

And for the first time—

It did not mirror him.

It moved independently.

A low voice echoed from it.

"…Stop suppressing."

Kairo's breath slowed.

"…Suppressing what?"

The room shook slightly.

Then—

A second presence emerged behind the first shadow.

Not fully formed.

But visible.

Distorted.

Unstable.

The second relic.

It had returned.

And this time—

It was not silent.

"…Release is required."

Kairo's expression darkened.

"…No."

The air cracked instantly.

⚠️ SYSTEM BREAKDOWN INITIATED

[Core Stability: 41%]

Kairo's eyes widened slightly.

"That dropped too fast…"

The system flickered violently.

Lines of broken code-like symbols filled his vision.

[ERROR]

Host synchronization failure

Relic conflict detected

Containment seal weakening

The room began to warp.

Walls bending slightly inward.

Light distorting.

Reality bending.

Kairo clenched his fist.

"…This is getting worse."

⚡ POWER LEAK BEGINS

His shadow suddenly expanded again.

But this time—

It wasn't just shadow.

It was pressure.

Pure force.

The air around him shattered slightly.

A ripple spread outward.

Glass in the room cracked.

The bed slid slightly backward.

Kairo stepped back immediately.

"…I didn't do that."

The first shadow spoke again.

Calm.

Too calm.

"…You are leaking."

Kairo's eyes narrowed.

"…Leaking what?"

The second shadow answered.

"…Us."

The system screamed internally.

[CRITICAL FAILURE]

Relic containment breach imminent

Kairo felt it.

Something inside him pushing outward.

Not pain.

Not control loss.

Pressure.

Like something enormous was trying to exist fully inside a space too small.

His breathing slowed.

"…So this is what you meant by unstable."

The room darkened slightly.

Not because of light.

Because something inside him was absorbing it.

Suddenly—

A crack appeared in the air in front of him.

Not a portal.

Not a tear.

A fracture.

Reality itself breaking under pressure.

From it—

A single fragment of darkness spilled out.

And the moment it touched the floor—

The entire room went silent.

Even the system paused.

Kairo stared at it.

"…That's not shadow."

The fragment moved slightly.

Alive.

Aware.

Then—

It expanded.

Slowly.

Like it was waking up.

⚠️ FINAL SYSTEM WARNING

[WARNING]

Host identity destabilizing

Relic dominance shifting

Kairo stepped forward slightly.

"…Stop."

The fragment stopped.

The entire room froze.

Then—

The first shadow spoke.

"…You are not in control anymore."

Kairo's eyes narrowed sharply.

"…I never was."

Silence.

Then—

The fragment slowly retracted.

As if obeying something else.

Not him.

Not the system.

Something deeper.

The system flickered one last time.

Then stabilized weakly.

[Emergency Stabilization Applied]

Everything slowly returned to normal.

Walls repaired visually.

Light restored.

Room still.

But Kairo knew.

Nothing was normal anymore.

He looked at his hand.

Then his shadow.

"…That was me."

No response.

But he could feel it.

The momentary slip.

The power leak.

It was real.

And it would happen again.

Far away—

The entire monitoring facility erupted in alarms.

[UNSTABLE CORE DETECTED]

[HOST POWER LEAK CONFIRMED]

[PHASE TWO ESCALATION REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY]

A commander stood silently.

"…He's breaking containment naturally."

Another voice responded.

"…Then Phase Two is no longer optional."

Silence.

Then—

"…Initiate retrieval."

🔥 ENDING HOOK

Back in his room—

Kairo sat down slowly.

The silence returned.

But this time—

It felt like something had already escaped.

Somewhere.

Somehow.

And it was only a matter of time before it returned.
