Chapter 13 - Like an onion

Lynn's gaze did not leave Kacy—

not as she walked away, not as the hallway thinned around her, not even as she turned the corner and vanished from sight.

For a second longer, Lynn stood still.

Watching nothing.

Then—

"Whatever you're doing…"

Kim's voice cut in, low but edged with something that didn't belong in casual conversation.

"Stop it."

The words didn't travel far—but they landed.

Lynn turned slowly.

Kim stood a few steps away, posture straight, gaze fixed. There was no hesitation in her stance now, no softness left from earlier composure.

This wasn't a warning tossed lightly.

It was deliberate.

Measured.

Heavy.

Lynn's brow lifted, a smile forming—not warm, not amused—something sharper.

"What exactly am I doing, Lil Miss Kim?" she asked, her tone almost playful as her eyes swept over Kim, assessing, weighing.

Kim didn't move.

"You know what you're doing."

A pause.

"And you need to stop."

The hallway noise dimmed around them—not because it had quieted, but because something in the space between them demanded attention.

Lynn's smile deepened, just slightly.

"Do I?"

Kim took a step forward.

Small.

But enough.

"You have no idea the path you're about to walk."

This time, there was no room to mistake it.

Not curiosity.

Not irritation.

Warning.

Real.

---

Behind her—

Colton's fingers stilled mid-motion.

Kaiden's gaze shifted—subtle, but precise.

They didn't speak.

They didn't need to.

That sentence—

It wasn't casual.

---

Lynn nodded once.

Twice.

Almost exaggerated.

Then she let out a soft laugh.

"That girl is like an onion," she said, voice light but carrying. "Layer after layer."

Her eyes flickered in the direction Kacy had gone.

"And I don't mind the tears it takes to get through them."

Kim's jaw tightened. "This isn't a game."

"The fact that you're warning me—" Lynn cut in smoothly, tilting her head "—only makes it more interesting."

A step closer.

Now they stood within each other's space.

"It's almost like you're trying to protect something."

Silence stretched.

"Or someone."

Kim's eyes sharpened.

"Whatever it is," Lynn continued, voice lowering just enough to draw the moment tighter, "…it won't stay hidden forever."

For a brief second—

Something flickered across Kim's face.

Not fear.

Not quite.

But close enough to tension that it mattered.

Lynn saw it.

And that—

That was enough.

She straightened.

Turned.

And walked away.

---

She passed Kaiden and Colton without breaking stride.

But she didn't ignore them.

Her gaze brushed past them—slow, deliberate.

Colton met it.

And for once—

There was no warmth in his expression.

Just cold.

Sharp.

Assessing.

Kaiden—

Unchanged.

Still.

Detached.

But his eyes—

Followed.

Lynn's lips curved faintly.

One way or another… I'll step into this circle.

She didn't look back.

---

Behind her—

Colton exhaled through his nose, tension coiling under his skin.

"She's—"

He stepped forward—

And stopped.

A hand rested on his shoulder.

Firm.

Grounding.

Colton turned.

Kaiden.

One brow raised.

A silent question.

Kaiden held his gaze for a moment.

Then—

A small smile appeared.

Controlled.

Gone almost as quickly as it came.

"She's right."

Colton blinked. "Who?"

Kaiden's eyes narrowed slightly.

Colton coughed. "Alright, alright—Lynn Mackenzie. But what part is she right?"

Kaiden didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slipped his hands into his pockets and started walking toward the library.

Colton followed, falling into step beside him.

"Your peach blossom," Kaiden said after a moment, tone even, "and her friend…"

A pause.

"…they're hiding something."

Colton tilted his head, studying him.

"And that excites you?"

Kaiden's lips curved faintly.

"I'm intrigued."

---

A grin spread across Colton's face.

There it is.

"She's good," he said, nudging Kaiden lightly with his shoulder. "Very observant."

A beat.

"Unlike someone I know."

Kaiden didn't react.

Colton clutched his chest dramatically. "Ah—wounded."

A quiet chuckle slipped out of him.

The tension eased.

Just slightly.

"I could recruit her," Colton added, voice dropping into something more thoughtful. "The Mackenzie family's structure is rigid—too rigid. People like her don't stay contained forever. If she's already pushing boundaries—"

"Not yet."

Kaiden's voice cut through.

Calm.

Final.

Colton glanced at him.

Kaiden didn't slow.

"We build first."

A second passed.

Then Colton nodded.

"Yeah."

His grin returned—softer this time.

"Foundation first."

---

The library greeted them with quiet.

Tall shelves. Filtered light. The kind of silence that wrapped around you rather than pressed in.

They moved instinctively toward their usual section—

Still talking.

Still in step.

"Imagine her face when she realizes she's being recruited by me," Colton added with a smirk.

Kaiden shot him a look. "She'll decline."

"Painful."

"Inevitable."

Colton laughed under his breath. "You have no faith in my charm."

"None."

"Cruel."

---

Then—

Impact.

A body brushed between them.

Too fast.

Too precise.

Gone before either could react.

Everything shifted.

Instantly.

The ease—

Gone.

Colton's smile faded.

His shoulders straightened.

His eyes sharpened, scanning.

Kaiden stilled completely.

The air around them tightened—subtle, but heavy.

Students nearby faltered without knowing why.

A second passed.

Then—

Kaiden looked down.

A wax-sealed envelope rested in his hand.

Colton's gaze dropped to it, something darker sliding into his expression.

A slow smile followed.

Different from before.

Colder.

"He's good," Colton murmured.

Kaiden studied the seal.

Recognition flickered.

"That's why he's the messenger."

---

The tension lingered—

Then slowly eased.

Like a breath released.

Around them, students resumed movement, unaware of what had just passed between seconds.

---

Colton leaned in slightly. "What does it say?"

Kaiden sat.

Colton followed.

The seal broke.

Clean.

Kaiden's eyes moved across the page—

And something shifted.

A smile.

Small.

Controlled.

But real.

He handed the letter over.

Colton read.

A soft chuckle escaped him.

Low.

Satisfied.

He folded the paper once, then looked up.

"Let's go."
