Chapter 21 - The Message No Mother Wants

Just as the family seemed to be finding stability again, tragedy nearly struck.

One rainy evening, Chumuka received a phone call.

The caller was unknown.

Her heart tightened immediately.

Few good things arrive through unexpected late-night calls.

"Are you Mrs. Chumuka Chanda?"

"Yes."

"There has been an accident."

For a moment, the world seemed to stop.

The caller explained that Twaambo, her grandson, had been involved in a serious bus accident during a school trip.

The line became blurry as panic flooded her mind.

Within minutes the family was rushing toward the hospital.

Nobody spoke much during the journey.

Everyone was trapped inside their own fears.

Choolwe prayed continuously.

Mwansa gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

Chanda stared silently through the window.

When they arrived, they learned that several children had been injured.

Doctors were still assessing the situation.

The waiting room felt endless.

Minutes felt like hours.

Hours felt like days.

For the first time in years, all the family's disagreements seemed insignificant.

The loan.

The inheritance dispute.

The arguments.

The pride.

None of it mattered.

Only one thing mattered.

Family.

Finally, a doctor emerged.

The family stood immediately.

The doctor's expression was serious but calm.

"Twaambo is injured," he said, "but he is going to recover."

Relief swept through the room like a wave.

Some cried openly.

Others simply sat down, overwhelmed.

Later, as Chumuka watched her grandson sleeping in the hospital bed, she reflected on how fragile life truly was.

A single phone call.

A single moment.

A single accident.

Everything can change.

She gently held his hand.

The dramas that had consumed the family suddenly appeared smaller than before.

Because life had reminded them of something essential.

Love is not measured during easy seasons.

It is revealed when people stand together through fear.

And although the storm was not completely over, the Chanda family was beginning to rediscover what mattered most.
