Chapter 14 - Chapter 14:The Whispering Shelves

The Royal Library was more than a building it was a living record of the Northern Empire's soul. In the quiet hours of the night the air in the basement felt thick like honey. Xuan Ye moved through the aisles his blue robe fluttering slightly as he walked with the Void Step. He was no longer just a boy in a basement he was a shadow navigating the lungs of the empire.

His Ink-Wash Heart beat with a slow heavy rhythm.

With every percentage point his connection to something Unwritten deepened. He could now hear the scrolls. Not the words written on them but the intent of the people who had created them. A scroll written by a dying soldier carried a sharp desperate resonance. A ledger written by a corrupt official felt oily and unstable.

He stopped in front of a shelf that was tucked away in a corner of the mid Grade history section. It was covered in a layer of grey dust that hadn't been disturbed in decades. The label simply read

Records of the Forgotten Alliances.

Xuan Ye reached out and his fingers brushed against a scroll made of dragon hide.

He didn't pull back. His Transcendent Mortal Physique acted as a shield and his Ink Wash Heart pulsed with a dark hunger. He gripped the scroll and pulled it from the shelf.

The moment he opened it a voice echoed in his mind. It wasn't the raspy voice of a ghost like the Jade Pillar Ancestor. It was a chorus of whispers.

"The North is a lie... the Heroes are anchors... the sky is a cage..."

Xuan Ye's eyes turned pitch black. He didn't focus on the whispers. He focused on the ink. The scroll detailed an alliance between the Northern Empire and the Eternal Flame Dominion from three thousand years ago. It wasn't an alliance of peace. It was a joint project to build a Light-Lock around the borders of the Finite World.

They aren't just protecting the empire, Xuan Ye realized. The Four Great Empires are working together to keep something out. Or to keep everyone in.

The more he learned the more he realized that the Elemental Heroes were like jailors. They maintained the balance so that the population would never grow strong enough to challenge the sky. The Northern Emperor the Flame Empress the Sea Emperor they were all administrators of a massive cosmic prison.

"So that's why they fear anomalies," Xuan Ye whispered. "A prisoner who doesn't follow the rules of the cell is a threat to the entire structure."

He rolled the scroll back up and placed it exactly where he had found it. He couldn't take the physical object but the information was already absorbed and stored in the Book of Fate.

He began to walk toward the exit of the basement when he felt a sudden ripple in the Qi above him. It wasn't the heavy thunder of Raiden. It was something light and ethereal.

The Third Princess.

Xuan Ye immediately dropped to his knees and pulled a stack of mundane tax ledgers toward him. He hunched his shoulders and let his breathing become shallow and ragged. He looked like a tired boy struggling with a heavy workload.

The door to the basement creaked open. Zhao Ling stepped in. She didn't wear her formal Royal robes tonight. She wore a simple white training outfit but her Heavenly Eyes were active. The soft green glow illuminated the dark shelves like twin emeralds.

"Xuan Ye," she said. Her voice was calm but it carried the weight of her late Qi Gathering peak.

Xuan Ye looked up blinking rapidly as if startled by the light. "Your Highness! I... I didn't hear you enter. My apologies!"

He tried to stand up but accidentally tripped over the ledgers and sprawled onto the floor.

Zhao Ling watched him with an unreadable expression. Her Truth-Seeking Vision was scanning him again. She saw the broken meridians. She saw a normal heart. But she lingered on his hands.

"The Head Archivist says you are the most efficient page he has ever had," she said walking closer. "He says you find things in minutes that usually take hours to locate. How does a boy with no spiritual roots navigate a library protected by high tier arrays?"

Xuan Ye kept his gaze on her boots. "I just... I remember the smells Your Highness. The old scrolls smell like dried earth. The new ones smell like chemicals. I just follow the scent. I have nothing else to do but work."

Zhao Ling stopped a few feet away. She reached out and lifted his chin with the tip of her finger. Xuan Ye looked into her green eyes and for a second he felt the Book of Fate try to lunge at her. He suppressed it with a sheer act of will.

"You are a strange variable Xuan Ye," she murmured. "I saw the Jade Pillar manifest at the waterfall. I saw the Demon. And yet you the only mortal in the vicinity walked away without a scratch. My eyes tell me you are a tragedy. But my instinct tells me you are a something more than that."

"I am just lucky Your Highness" Xuan Ye said and his voice trembled perfectly. "Luck is all a trash like me has left."

Zhao Ling pulled her hand back. "Perhaps. Or perhaps the Heavens have a different script for you. I am leaving for the Holy Sanctuary of the White Lotus in two days. Lin Xue has been returned to the temple but she is... empty. The priests say her bloodline was erased. Not stolen. Erased."

Xuan Ye's heart missed a beat a genuine one. Erased. They might start to understand the nature of the Unwritten.

"I want you to accompany my convoy," Zhao Ling continued. "As my personal page. The Sanctuary has the best libraries in the World. If there is a record of what happened at that waterfall it will be there. And if you are as lucky as you say maybe that luck will help me find the truth."

Xuan Ye bowed his head "I am the Princess's shadow. I will go wherever you command."

"Good. Prepare your things. We leave at dawn."

She turned and left the basement. The emerald light vanished and the darkness rushed back in.

Xuan Ye stood up slowly. He wiped the dust from his knees.

The Holy Sanctuary, he thought. The center of the world. The place that holds authority equal to the Supreme Sects. And the home of the 6 Righteous Holy Sects.

If the Royal Library was a pantry the Holy Sanctuary was a feast. They had healing arts that could revive the dead. They had the the great ancestors that could crash countries like a piece of cake. And they had all the secrets of the Demonic Kingdom and the Forest of Death.

He looked at his hands. The black ink was swirling under his skin eager to taste the Life of the White Lotus once again.

"Then I will just have to be the most convincing mortal they have ever seen" Xuan Ye whispered.

He didn't go back to his quarters to sleep. He spent the rest of the night absorbing the remaining scrolls in the basement. If he was leaving the capital he was going to take its entire history with him.

By the time the sun rose he had reached 16% of the Ink-Wash Heart.

The journey to the center of the world was about to begin. The Princess thought she was using him as a lucky charm to find a demon. She didn't realize she was inviting the end of the world into her own carriage.

Xuan Ye walked out into the morning light and his cheerful smile was brighter than the sun.

The script was moving, the Holy Sanctuary was about to learn that some things are better left unwritten.
