Chapter 5: You Were Never Safe
The room was quiet again.
Too quiet.
She stood frozen, staring at the empty space where he had just been.
Her mind refused to believe it.
"He was here…" she whispered.
"But… how can someone just disappear?"
Her phone was still in her hand.
The last message burned into her eyes—
"Now you can't ignore it anymore."
A sudden knock on the door made her jump.
Knock. Knock.
Her heart skipped.
"W-who is it?" she asked,
her voice shaking.
Silence.
Another knock.
Slower this time.
Heavier.
Knock… Knock…
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
She slowly walked toward the door.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
"Is someone there?" she asked again.
No answer.
Her hand reached for the handle.
For a moment—
She hesitated.
Then suddenly—
Her phone buzzed loudly.
She flinched and looked down.
A new message.
From him.
"Don't open the door."
Her breath stopped.
Another message came instantly—
"It's not me."
Her heart started racing uncontrollably.
Then—
The knocking stopped.
Complete silence.
Relief barely had time to settle—
Because a new sound replaced it.
A faint scratching.
From the other side of the door.
Her eyes widened in horror.
Scratch… scratch…
It sounded like someone—
Or something—
Dragging their nails slowly across the wood.
Her legs felt weak.
"What… is that…" she whispered.
Her phone buzzed again.
"Stay away from the door."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I don't understand… what's happening to me…"
The scratching suddenly stopped.
Silence returned.
But this time—
It felt worse.
Because slowly…
Very slowly…
The door handle began to turn.
Her heart nearly stopped.
"No…" she stepped back, shaking her head.
The handle turned halfway—
Then stopped.
For a second—
Nothing happened.
And then—
A whisper.
From the other side.
Soft.
Distorted.
Not human.
"Open… the door…"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Her voice broke as she whispered, "Go away…"
The whisper came again.
Closer this time.
"I know… you're inside…"
Her body froze.
Because at that exact moment—
Her phone buzzed again.
"It found you."
