Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Mother Hen

Tang Han spent the entire noon break reading, and his trainer expertise rose to yet another level.

The more he read it, the more he wanted to recommend the second half of From Beginner Trainer to Basement Material to other people.

Because it was just that good.

He had the distinct feeling that whoever wrote this book had to be a kindred spirit. Other people might not understand what the author was getting at, but Tang Han could grasp it at a glance, as though the two of them were long-lost brothers with identical thought processes.

Tang Han had asked the system who the author was, but the damned thing simply played dead and refused to answer. Left with no other choice, Tang Han could only keep reading while silently praying that this poor veteran had somehow managed to escape the basement in the end.

As for lunch, two gulps of his own custom-made S-rank honey drink solved that problem easily enough.

And just like that, afternoon arrived.

Since Tracen Academy's schedule was academic classes in the morning and physical training in the afternoon, the training grounds were far more crowded than they had been earlier. Horse girls steadily began to fill the place.

Among them were even some veteran trainers who had brought their own runners over to the sandpit for long-jump practice.

Looks like they knew long-jump training could improve speed too, Tang Han thought. They even came early to claim the best spots.

"This is a problem."

He scratched his head awkwardly.

Originally, he had planned to continue Urara's jump training that afternoon. But now the training area had already been occupied, and according to the principle of first come, first served, Tang Han had no grounds to demand the space back. After all, he had merely been sitting nearby reading instead of actually training.

With the training area gone, the plan he had set earlier was useless.

So what now?

It was not as though he could simply build a piece of speed-training equipment on the spot.

"Actually, you can," the system suddenly said.

Tang Han blinked. "Hm? What do you mean?"

"The author of that previous book also wrote another one," the system said. "It just so happens to teach you how to build training equipment."

Tang Han narrowed his eyes. "What book?"

"The title is Training Tools: From Building Treadmills to Making Children's Toys."

Tang Han: "..."

Well then. That veteran really was an all-round genius.

And he had definitely gotten thoroughly ravaged in the end.

"Let me see it first."

Tang Han pulled out Training Tools: From Building Treadmills to Making Children's Toys and found that the thing was thicker than ten advanced mathematics textbooks stacked together.

That said, the contents still felt remarkably aligned with his own tastes, and most of it consisted of hand-drawn diagrams showing how to assemble finished products from individual parts.

The first half was perfectly normal: it taught the reader how to build treadmills, resistance bars, massage devices, and even electric toy cars.

The strange part was the second half.

Crib mobiles, carrot-whacking games, UFO toys, fishing rods...

Every last one of them was a child's toy.

That veteran must have ended up with an enormous family—wives everywhere, kids everywhere.

What a tragedy.

Tang Han flipped through the book a little more, then finally shut it with a sigh.

Yes, it did explain how to build a decent treadmill out of simple parts.

But that still required actual parts.

Tang Han had only been employed for two days. He owned basically nothing besides the clothes on his back.

As for opening a shop and selling S-rank honey drinks, he had already ruled that out. Selling things would waste too much time, and something as absurdly delicious as his honey drink would inevitably make people addicted. Once that happened, a mob of obsessed fans would start hunting down its creator, Tang Han, costing him even more time.

What a headache.

He could only revise the training plan on the fly.

Tang Han rubbed at his aching temples—he had skipped his noon nap, and his head was throbbing—and started thinking up a new training schedule.

Just then, Urara arrived at the training grounds as promised.

Only, she was not alone.

There was another horse girl walking beside her.

King Halo.

"Urara-chan, where's your trainer?" King Halo asked. "I don't see him anywhere."

"Trainer-san is a super amazing ninja," Urara replied proudly. "He's using an invisibility technique. If you don't look carefully, you won't be able to find him."

"A ninja? Invisibility?" King Halo looked deeply skeptical.

"Urara-chan, you haven't been tricked, have you?"

"No way! Trainer-san would never lie to me. I trust Trainer-san!"

"But you only met him this morning, didn't you?"

"That's not right," Urara corrected. "We met last night."

"Last night?!" King Halo stared, then immediately grabbed Urara by the shoulders in alarm. "Urara-chan, he didn't do anything to you, did he?!"

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"I mean... did he coax you into taking your clothes off? Or touch you with his hands or anything?"

Urara blinked in confusion. "No?"

"Whew. That's good..." King Halo finally let out a breath.

"I've heard some trainers are perverts," she said seriously. "You're so cute, Urara-chan. Be careful not to get kidnapped. From now on, you need to keep your distance from him. If he ever tries anything inappropriate, call the police. And if that doesn't work, call me. I'll come protect you."

"Okay..."

While the two horse girls were talking, Tang Han—who had been sitting barely three feet in front of them in silent meditation—opened his eyes and looked up at them speechlessly.

Tang Han: I think I just heard someone talking behind my back.

System: Not "I think." That is exactly what happened.

Tang Han: "..."

He studied the brown-haired, wavy-haired horse girl standing beside Urara and immediately recognized her.

Oh. So it was King Halo—Urara's roommate, and also the mother hen of her daily life.

Tang Han did not actually mind being used as a negative example to educate children. If it really helped Urara raise her guard and protect herself, then in a way he would have contributed something useful.

Besides, he needed to keep his distance from every horse girl anyway. King Halo's earnest warnings to Urara were, if anything, helping him out.

Well said, King Halo.

"Good afternoon, you two," Tang Han said, taking the initiative to greet them.

"Eek!"

King Halo jumped so hard at the sudden voice that her whole body trembled, her tail sticking straight up as she stared at Tang Han in terror.

What was that?!

Who had just appeared in front of her?!

Suspicious person?!

Compared to King Halo's fright, however, Urara was delighted.

"Ah! Trainer-san! You were here!"

"See, Saint King-chan? I told you so. Trainer-san really can use invisibility~"

"It's actually real..." King Halo still found it hard to believe.

But however reluctant she was to accept it, she had no choice but to admit that the black-clad person before her really did seem capable of becoming invisible.

And apparently he had been sitting there for quite a while, listening to their whole conversation.

Which meant everything she had just said about him—every bad thing—had probably been heard in full.

This is so awkward. Should I apologize?

King Halo really did want to apologize.

Unfortunately, her overwhelming pride stopped the words from coming out. The apology that should have left her mouth instead emerged as a noble-lady laugh.

"Ohohohohoho—"

She let out an elegant peal of laughter.

"You should be grateful," she declared. "You just witnessed Saint King's Moment of Panic. That's a rare sight no one else gets to see. We're even now."

Tang Han: "..."

Right. Of course that was how she chose to handle it.
