The rascals around me and I turned our heads this way and that, looking for the disappeared moonbird. But even the gem pieces that had been on the desk were gone, let alone the moonbird, and from somewhere, a strange noise kept coming.
"Quack."
Edwin followed the sound to the other side of the desk, and then something fluttered up. Dodging Edwin's preemptively swung sword, that something screamed in utter panic, fiercely flapping its wings.
"Quaaack!"
'What's that? The moonbird? … But it's too small to be that.'
Besides, it wasn't a ghost but a living bird, which shed real golden feathers each time it flapped its wings.
A bird, looking just like the moonbird but much smaller in size, flew around the office, making loud quacks.
As I connected the dots that the disappeared gems were pieces of the moonbird's egg, I realized what that creature might be.
