Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: New Roommate (Part 1)

The next morning.

Shirai Kuroko walked down the school corridor huffily. The more she recalled the scene of her Onee-sama taking the initiative to exchange contact info with that white-haired guy yesterday, the stronger the jealousy on her became.

"Even I, Kuroko, don't have Onee-sama's contact information! As expected, I'm still not bold enough. Next time I see Onee-sama, I must get her contact info... I want both of my Onee-samas'!!!"

Thinking this, Kuroko raised one of her palms and clenched it tightly. Her eyes seemed to burn with a raging fire, scaring the passing students into instinctively distancing themselves from her.

Of course, Kuroko didn't care about that. In her eyes, it was enough just to be on good terms with her two Onee-samas; as for other students, she'd get along if she could, and if not, so be it.

In a sense, she was quite like Chinatsu, except Chinatsu was an energy-saver who was too lazy to speak up, while Kuroko simply felt it was unnecessary.

Just as Kuroko reached the corner and was about to turn, a familiar voice drifted from the right corner, catching her attention.

"Onee-sama?!"

Kuroko immediately recognized Mikoto's voice, but this time she didn't rush over excitedly. Instead, she leaned against the wall and peeked stealthily toward the right corridor.

The school's Infirmary was on the right corridor. Outside the Infirmary door, Misaka Mikoto was standing with her back to Kuroko, chatting with Yukiko.

To hear more clearly, Kuroko's eavesdropping posture unknowingly became distorted. She looked as comical as could be, but the effect was remarkably significant.

"Yukiko, aren't you moving back?"

Mikoto pursed her lips, looking at Yukiko with reluctance. She had thought that as long as they talked things out, Yukiko would move back to the dorm.

To this end, she had even begged the Dorm Supervisor not to arrange a new roommate too quickly. In exchange, she had agreed to clean the dormitory corridors for a whole week.

"Well... Mikoto, you know my sister's physical condition. Back in the family, she was the one taking care of me; now it's my turn to take care of her."

Yukiko responded softly while turning her head toward the Infirmary door. Inside, Sha Danshan, lying on the bed, wasn't asleep but was quietly staring at the ceiling.

[Empress of the Infirmary]

The title she had gained by acting weak was now unexpectedly fitting. At this moment, she desperately hoped her body would recover quickly so she could join the investigation into the Takebayashi Yayoi from three years ago.

Poor physical condition.

Worrying mental state.

How could Sha Danshan's current state put Yukiko's mind at ease? So she chose to stay by her sister's side, gathering the courage to stand up to her.

[Sister! This is the medicine the doctor prescribed. Even if it's bitter, you have to take it!]

[Look what time it is! Close your eyes and go to sleep. Only by maintaining a healthy routine can your body recover quickly!]

[Want to sit up and look at files? It's not time for you to sit up yet. Lie back down quickly. Sister, do you want to aggravate your injuries?!]

Perhaps having experienced too much helplessness, Yukiko's attitude toward her sister had become much firmer. Often, Sha Danshan, lying in bed, would have the illusion that she was actually the younger sister.

Mikoto was naturally very aware of Sha Danshan's situation, so she also understood that Yukiko's choice to live with her sister was perfectly correct, but...

Understanding was one thing.

Reluctance was another.

"Let's pinky swear!"

Mikoto childishly extended her pinky. Seeing this, Yukiko couldn't help but laugh softly, then extended her own pinky, and they hooked them together.

Kuroko, watching the whole scene as a third party, was so envious she almost ascended to heaven. The entire scene was like a desolate sight of a girl in unrequited love witnessing her crush holding hands with another girl.

"It hurts! Kuroko is in so much pain!"

Kuroko clutched her chest with one hand. Although she had already known through investigation that the relationship between Mikoto and Yukiko was very good, witnessing it with her own eyes was still too painful.

Just as she wanted to retreat temporarily to avoid the brunt of it, Mikoto's next words froze her feet like a spell.

"Ahhh~ Since you aren't moving back, Yukiko, the Dorm Supervisor will definitely arrange a new roommate for me. You know my personality; ordinary people can't get along with me at all. They'd probably have to move out in a few days~"

Mikoto shrugged helplessly and let out a long sigh. Beside her, Yukiko didn't actually agree with those words; she always felt Mikoto underestimated her own personal charm.

However...

"Ordinary people? It looks like you already have some candidates in mind, Mikoto? Let's hear them~"

Yukiko asked with a grin. At this moment, the eavesdropping Kuroko was both expectant and fearful.

If she weren't a non-Strength-type Ability User, the school wall she was clutching would have probably had holes dug into it by her fingers.

Hearing Yukiko's question, Mikoto lowered her head and pretended to think in silence for a moment. She did have a candidate, but not "some"—just one.

"Kuroko, maybe. She's a very good junior, and I quite like her..."

"Onee-sama!!!"

Before Mikoto could finish, Kuroko's demonic way of calling out reached her ears. Startled, Mikoto hurriedly turned her head toward the source of the sound.

And Kuroko, teleporting via Space Movement, unexpectedly appeared in the air behind Mikoto and hugged her from behind.

"Onee-sama! Kuroko is so happy! I'll go apply to the Dorm Supervisor right now! I'll try for the day after tomorrow... no, tomorrow... I'll move in with my luggage today!!!"

With Kuroko's enthusiasm, Mikoto's dormitory was about to burst with new vitality. In contrast, Chinatsu's side was as quiet as ever; after all, Sha Danshan hadn't returned to the dorm many times before moving out.

Furthermore, Chinatsu lived in the Tower Dormitory within Academy City. The number of students staying there was significantly lower than on Mikoto's side. Chinatsu was already prepared to stay in the dorm alone even through the second year.

In fact, the Dorm Supervisor of the Tower Dormitory hadn't planned to arrange a new roommate for Chinatsu, until a transfer student appeared and also chose the Tower Dormitory in Academy City.

Tokiwadai, school gate.

This transfer student had long black hair, and the aura of a well-bred young lady about her was even stronger than that of most students at Tokiwadai.

With one hand, she flicked open a fan, which slightly obscured half of her face.

"Tokiwadai, I, Kongo Mitsuko, have arrived!"
