Chapter 20: When the World Sees
Emily no longer felt the ground beneath her. The instant something inside her gave way, everything else followed—the pressure, the voices, the fear—collapsing into something deeper, something heavier. It wasn't losing control, it was becoming something else.
Darkness surged—not outward alone, not merely around her, but through her. Her breath caught as her vision splintered, the world fracturing into shards of shadow and light. For a brief moment she saw everything anew, the street, the houses, the people behind their curtains. She felt their heartbeats, their breaths, their terror.
Emily gasped as the sensation overwhelmed her. "Make it stop…" she whispered, barely audible.
But the shadows only thickened, rising higher and darker until they swallowed the streetlights, plunging the block into an unnatural dusk. Inside, curtains twitched and lights blinked on. People were waking, watching.
"Emily!" Lena's frantic voice cut through the chaos. "Look at me!"
Emily tried…but it felt like trying to hold onto air while being pulled underwater. "I can't" she shook her head. "I can't tell where I end anymore."
The darkness had become part of her.
Her mate clasped her wrist, firm and grounding, yet distant as though reaching through mist. "Emily, listen, you're still in control. Focus."
She forced a nod. "I'm trying…" But the shadows reacted, surging outward in a shockwave that rattled windows until glass shattered.
Someone screamed. The sound struck Emily like a blade. She froze. "No…" horror laced her voice. She hadn't meant harm, panic roared as she realized people were seeing this destruction.
"Emily, stop!" Lena's plea was desperate. "You're scaring them…please…"
"I don't know how!" Emily shouted, tears blurring her sight.
A tall observer frowned. "It's spreading beyond the field."
The second man stepped back. "We need to contain it now."
"Try" her mate snapped, stepping before her, though uncertainty trembled in his voice.
The mark on Emily's arm seared. Agony lanced through her as she sank to her knees. The shadows pulsed alive, crawling along walls and ground, hungry. Streetlights popped one by one, each blast drawing more terror.
Emily felt every fear, every breath of panic. It fed something within her. "I don't want this," she whispered. But deep inside, something did.
A wave of realization crashed through her. The shadows pulsed in response.
Her mate crouched before her, voice urgent. "Emily, look at me." She obeyed, and for a heartbeat his eyes were everything. "Stay with me. You're not this—you're stronger."
Her chest tightened. "You didn't think that before," she whispered.
Pain flickered in his expression. "I was wrong," he said, quietly honest.
Emily's breath caught. "I needed you," she murmured. "And you left."
Silence fell. The shadows stilled, listening. "I know," he said, voice rough. "I'll spend my life fixing that if I have to."
Part of her wanted to believe him. The darkness recoiled in response.
Suddenly the taller man lunged through the edge of the shadows. "Enough!" he commanded.
The air compressed around them, a physical force slamming into Emily. Power surged through her—not fear, but raw strength. Her eyes darkened, and the shadows exploded outward in a massive pulse, tearing through the last barrier and swallowing the block in utter night.
For a moment, everyone was blind, breathless. Then it stopped. The darkness hovered, suspended, waiting.
Emily lifted her head. Her breathing evened, the tears had ceased. When she spoke, her voice was calm and cold. "Leave."
The word echoed through the gloom. The taller man froze, then understanding softened his features. "…It's begun," he whispered.
The second man backed away. "We're done here."
Her mate said nothing. He simply watched her, really watched. The girl he'd known was gone.
The shadows retreated, folding back into her as though they belonged there. The street reemerged, scarred and silent—shattered windows, flickering lights, stunned onlookers.
Emily stood at the center of it all. No hiding. No pretending. The world had seen her true power—and nothing would ever be the same again.
