Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 : The Board That Chooses Who Remains

Veron Academy was no longer the same.

In the wake of the collective trial, something imperceptible shifted within its walls.

The students were no longer mere trainees; they had been reduced to variables on the brink of final resolution.

At dawn, a single notice was posted across every hall:

> *"The Elite Trial begins tonight."*

Directly beneath it:

> *"Survival is not a right… it is a consequence."*

No one offered further explanations.

Because in this place, explanations were considered a weakness.

The Trial of Death (The Elite Begins)

That night, the students were herded into a single hall.

But this time, it was no classroom.

It was a sealed arena, devoid of any visible exit.

And in its center:

A colossal chessboard.

But it was different.

Every square was illuminated, each glow tethered to a faint, rhythmic pulse beneath the floor.

It was as if the board itself were alive.

The system's voice echoed:

"This is the Elite Trial."

A pause.

"Each player will face a direct opponent."

Then, the addendum:

"But not everyone will advance to the second round."

The silence that followed was far crueler than any threat.

♟️ The Arrival of the First Student

He entered.

Without announcement.

Without applause.

Yet, the moment he crossed the threshold, the very atmosphere of the room shifted.

It was as if the Academy itself had paused for a fraction of a second just to observe him.

The First Student.

The same unnerving calm.

The same gaze that sought nothing… because it already knew everything.

A student whispered from the crowd:

"He isn't participating in the trial…"

"He *is* the system."

Then, he looked directly at him.

And for the first time…

Their eyes met.

It wasn't a challenge.

It wasn't fear.

It was something far more dangerous:

**A mutual acknowledgment of existence.**

♟️ The Confrontation Begins

His name was called.

Not as a student's name.

But as a "direct participant."

He took his seat before the board.

The first student sat opposite him.

No words.

No pleasantries.

---

The first move.

Calm.

Flawless.

---

Then, the reply.

Faster.

Deeper.

---

From that moment on, the match began to morph into something else entirely.

It was no longer just chess.

It was a war of perception.

---

Every move the First Student made seemed designed not merely to win…

but to test his reactions.

---

He began to understand:

*"He isn't trying to defeat me…"*

*"He's trying to figure out who I am."*

♟️ A Silent Escalation

As the game progressed, the hall began to change in silence.

Every powerful move caused the light in a specific square to dim.

It was as if every decision carried a tangible weight.

In the background, a student began to break down during another match.

But no one looked away.

Because all eyes were fixed here.

For the first time, the First Student spoke in a low voice:

"You are different from the rest."

A pause.

"But you are not yet complete."

He didn't reply.

But inside him, something began to stir rapidly.

Not anger.

But a new awakening.

 ♟️ The Moment of Fracture

In the middle of the match…

He found an opening.

A real opening.

A tiny, rare mistake by the First Student.

But instead of exploiting it immediately…

He stopped.

For the first time.

He stopped.

---

Inside his mind, he heard the old man's voice from the past:

*"Don't look at the move… look for the trap."*

He altered his decision.

He stepped back.

And in that exact moment…

The first student smiled.

A very brief smile.

As if the very thing he had been waiting for had just occurred.

---

"Good."

That was all he said.

---

Then, he completely changed the shape of the game.

 ♟️ The Deferred End

The match wasn't over yet.

But everyone understood one thing:

This was no ordinary test.

It was a direct selection of who would become part of the next tier.

---

The final result was not announced.

But the system stated:

"The outcome is not yet sealed."

---

Then, it added:

"But we have found one capable of enduring."

---

And the First Student's gaze remained locked on him alone.

As if to say:

*"The real phase begins when the Academy ends."*
