"Step back, Ren."
The voice is a tectonic shift in the dark. Kaito Vane stands ten feet away. His silhouette carves a jagged wound in the city's glare. Crimson spatters his signature high collar. His hand clutches a suppressed pistol. For the moment, he is a man who has long forgotten fear.
Ren refuses to retreat. He whirls around. His obsidian-wave hair lashes in the wind as he flashes Kaito a breathless grin.
"You bought the contract, Kaito," Ren shouts over the roar of the wind. "You bought the house, the clothes, and the advanced law degree. You even bought the silence of the men who tried to kill me tonight."
Ren steps one inch further back. A piece of masonry crumbles beneath his heel and tumbles into the dark.
"But you didn't buy the exit," Ren whispers. His voice suddenly drops into a lethal, intimate register.
Kaito moves then. Not toward the gun, but toward Ren. The Shark's mask is gone. For the first time, the billionaire's eyes are wide, fractured by a terrifying, primal desperation. He reaches out, his fingers trembling.
"I didn't buy a trophy," Kaito growls, his voice cracking. "I bought a partner. Someone who could survive the water with me."
"You bought a wolf," Ren counters. He looks down at the drop, then back at the man who has spent the last month trying to own his soul. "And you forgot that a wolf would rather hit the pavement at terminal velocity than live in a cage made of your mercy."
