Chapter 24 - THE VICTIM IS THE PROBLEM

The steady rhythm of the monitor beside him was the only thing confirming that he was still there, still breathing, still alive.

Her eyes moved slowly over him, taking in the bandage across his forehead, the faint bruising already forming along his jaw and the rise and fall of his chest that seemed heavier than it should have been. 

The sheet covered most of his body but she didn't need to see the wound to remember it. 

She had already seen enough.

She took a few more steps closer, as if the room demanded it, her hand instinctively tightening around the edge of her sleeve before she let it fall again.

You really didn't have to come save me. 

A faint breath left her mouth.

I told you…this arrangement doesn't require… anything beyond what's necessary.
