Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Preliminary Evaluation

The man didn't leave the school.

Not immediately.

Instead—

He observed.

From a distance.

Second floor.

Hallway corner.

Minimal visibility.

Maximum coverage.

His tablet remained active.

Data updated in real time.

Subject: Jared Alonzo

Status: Active

Classification: Irregular

"…reaction speed improved," he murmured.

"…behavioral pattern: non-standard."

He replayed the cafeteria interaction.

Frame by frame.

Eye movement.

Speech timing.

Response delay.

Everything—

Too precise.

"…no hesitation," he noted.

"…no confusion."

A pause.

"…no fear."

That was the anomaly.

Most subjects—

At this stage—

Showed instability.

Uncertainty.

Emotional fluctuation.

Jared showed none.

Instead—

He analyzed.

Adjusted.

Adapted.

"…growth rate exceeds projection," the man said.

He tapped his tablet.

A new window opened.

Authorization Required

He entered a code.

Connection established.

A voice came through.

Distorted.

Filtered.

"…report."

The man stood still.

"…Subject 47 has been located."

Silence.

"…status?"

"…active and responsive."

"…deviation?"

A pause.

"…significant."

Silence deepened.

"…define."

The man's eyes shifted slightly—

Toward the direction of Jared's classroom.

"…he is aware."

Another pause.

Longer.

Heavier.

"…impossible," the voice replied.

"…unlikely," the man corrected.

"…clarify."

"…he has identified observation patterns."

Silence.

"…and?"

"…he did not react emotionally."

Another pause.

"…what did he do?"

The man answered simply.

"…he adjusted."

Silence.

Then—

"…continue observation," the voice said.

"…no interference."

A brief pause.

"…yet."

Connection terminated.

The screen went dark.

The man lowered the tablet slightly.

"…interesting," he repeated.

Because this—

Was not normal.

Subjects were supposed to grow.

But not like this.

Not this fast.

Not this clean.

Meanwhile—

Inside the classroom—

Jared stopped writing.

"…something changed," he muttered.

Iris glanced at him.

"…again?"

"…external variable shifted."

"…you mean the creepy guy?"

"…yes."

"…I still don't like him."

"…agreement noted."

Jared looked toward the window.

Empty.

But the feeling—

Still there.

Watching.

Measuring.

Observer confirmed.

Intent: evaluation.

"…this isn't random," Jared said.

"…you keep saying that."

"…because it isn't."

He tapped his pen lightly against the desk.

Once.

Twice.

Thinking.

Faster than before—

But more careful now.

If they are observing—

Then they have expectations.

If expectations exist—

Then tests will follow.

Jared's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…next phase incoming," he murmured.

"…why do you say things like that so casually?" Iris asked.

"…pattern recognition."

"…I hate your patterns."

"…noted."

Jared leaned back slightly.

Calm.

But alert.

Because now—

He wasn't just experimenting anymore.

He was being evaluated.

And if someone was evaluating him—

Then sooner or later—

They would push him.

The only question was—

How far?
