Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Boundary Violation

They didn't wait long.

That was intentional.

By afternoon—

Jared was called out again.

"…Jared Alonzo."

The voice wasn't the professor's.

Calm.

Flat.

The observer.

Silence fell over the room.

Iris looked at him immediately.

"…don't go."

"…not optional," Jared replied.

"…I mean it."

"…noted."

But he stood anyway.

Because now—

Avoidance wasn't possible.

The hallway felt different.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Jared followed the observer without speaking.

Turn after turn.

Until—

They stopped.

Same room.

But not the same atmosphere.

The door closed behind them.

Locked.

"…you violated protocol," the observer said.

No introduction.

No delay.

"…define protocol," Jared replied.

A pause.

Then—

"…unauthorized amplification."

Silence.

Jared didn't deny it.

"…confirmed," he said.

The observer studied him.

Longer than before.

"…side effects?" he asked.

"…instability."

"…specific."

"…cognitive overload, motor delay, visual disturbance."

A pause.

Then—

"…and yet you continued."

"…yes."

Silence.

The observer stepped closer.

"…why?"

Jared answered immediately.

"…optimization."

A pause.

Then—

"…incorrect."

Silence.

"…this is not optimization," the observer continued.

"…this is deviation."

Jared's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…results improved," he said.

"…temporarily."

Another step closer.

"…you're burning capacity."

Silence.

"…define," Jared said.

"…you are accelerating beyond stable thresholds," the observer replied.

"…your system is not designed to sustain it."

A pause.

"…then it will adapt," Jared said.

That—

Was the wrong answer.

The observer's expression didn't change.

But something shifted.

"…or it will collapse," he said.

Silence.

Jared didn't respond.

Because now—

There was uncertainty.

Small.

But present.

The observer turned slightly.

Walked toward the table.

Placed something down.

A new folder.

"…next assessment," he said.

Jared paused.

"…immediate?"

"…yes."

"…current condition: unstable."

"…intentional."

Silence.

Jared understood.

This isn't just a test.

This is pressure.

Forced adaptation.

"…begin," the observer said.

Jared didn't move.

Not immediately.

Because now—

This wasn't about proving intelligence.

It was about survival.

He opened the folder.

The problem inside—

Was worse.

Highly complex.

Time-sensitive.

No margin for error.

Jared's vision flickered again.

Instability increasing.

But he started anyway.

Because stopping—

Wasn't an option.

Time passed.

Minutes blurred.

His thoughts raced—

Too fast.

Too loud.

But he forced control.

Line by line.

Step by step.

Until—

He finished.

Barely.

Jared placed the paper down.

Hand shaking slightly.

"…complete," he said.

The observer reviewed it.

Long silence.

Then—

"…acceptable."

Jared exhaled slowly.

"…but inefficient," the observer added.

Silence.

"…you forced growth," he continued.

"…and lost control."

A pause.

"…that makes you predictable."

Jared's eyes sharpened.

Predictable.

That word—

Was unacceptable.

The observer stepped back.

"…final warning," he said.

"…unauthorized methods will not be tolerated."

A pause.

"…next violation—"

Silence.

Then—

"…will result in removal."

The word landed heavily.

Jared didn't ask what it meant.

He already knew.

The observer turned.

Walked to the door.

"…adapt properly," he said.

"…or don't adapt at all."

The door opened.

Then closed.

Silence.

Jared stood there.

Alone.

Hand still shaking.

Mind still racing.

But now—

There was something new.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

But pressure.

Real pressure.

And for the first time—

The system pushed back.

Hard.
