Chapter 16 - Episode 16: The Version You Accept

You're agreeing to what she became because of it.

The words stayed on his screen.

Didn't fade.

Didn't soften.

He didn't look away.

Not from the message.

Not from her.

"You changed," he said finally.

Lesica didn't react.

Not immediately.

"Yes."

No defense.

No explanation.

Just truth.

"Because of that night."

Another pause.

"Yes."

He swallowed slightly.

"And you're saying… this—" his hand lowered, gesturing faintly between them, "—is because I didn't stop you."

A small shift in her expression.

Not denial.

Recognition.

"It's because you didn't choose me."

That again.

Precise.

Specific.

Different from not caring.

Different from not knowing.

"You think I'm choosing now," he said.

"I know you are."

"How?"

A pause.

Then—

"You didn't walk away when it got uncomfortable."

Silence.

Because that was true.

He could have left.

He didn't.

"That doesn't mean I accept everything," he said.

Lesica's gaze sharpened slightly.

"It means you're willing to see it."

"That's not the same thing."

"No," she agreed quietly.

"It's the part before it."

That didn't sit well.

"Before what?"

A beat.

"Before you decide if I'm still someone you would've turned around for."

That question—

that one—

cut deeper than the rest.

Because it wasn't about the past anymore.

It was about now.

He looked at her.

Really looked this time.

At the way she held herself.

The way she spoke.

The way she controlled things without forcing them.

"You're not the same," he said.

"No."

"And you expect me to just… accept that?"

"I expect you to understand it."

"That's not easier."

"It's not supposed to be."

Silence.

Because now—

this wasn't tension.

It was weight.

Choice.

His.

The phone buzzed again.

He didn't pick it up immediately.

"Read it," Lesica said softly.

No control this time.

Just… permission.

He looked down.

"If you walk away now, you prove nothing changed."

A beat.

"If you stay, you're not choosing her."

His brow tightened.

"You're choosing the version of yourself that finally can."

That…

that hit differently.

Because now—

this wasn't about her.

It was about him.

Who he was then.

And who he was now.

He looked up at her again.

"You knew this would happen," he said.

Lesica didn't deny it.

"I knew you'd reach this point."

"And the messages?"

A pause.

Then—

"They're just making sure you don't avoid it again."

That answer sat heavier than expected.

"You're working with them."

Not a question.

A statement.

Lesica didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

That should've felt like a loss of control.

But it didn't.

Because now—

everything made sense.

The timing.

The pressure.

The way nothing felt random.

"You set this up."

"I continued it."

That distinction mattered.

More than he wanted it to.

"And if I walk away?" he asked.

A pause.

Then—

Lesica stepped back.

Not blocking him.

Not closing distance.

Opening it.

"You'll leave the same way you did before."

Silence.

"And you?" he asked.

This time—

her answer came slower.

"I won't be there when you realize it."

That landed.

Hard.

Because now—

this wasn't control.

It was consequence.

Real.

Final.

His phone buzzed one last time.

He didn't need to read it.

But he did anyway.

"This is the moment you didn't take last time."

A beat.

"What you do now decides everything after."

The room went still.

No pressure.

No movement.

Just choice.

He looked at her.

Then at the door.

Then back at her.

And this time—

he didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward.

Not because she guided him.

Not because the messages pushed him.

But because—

for the first time—

he understood what he hadn't before.

And chose differently.

Cliffhanger:

Lesica didn't move.

Didn't react.

Just watched him step closer—

like she'd already seen this version of him once before.

And wasn't sure yet—

if it would end the same way.
