Chapter 2
The Void in the Azure Heart
The mist of the mountain pass was thick, clinging to Lin Tian's robes like the cold touch of a ghost. He walked until his legs felt like lead, eventually sinking onto a jagged, moss-covered stone. The silence of the wilderness was a sharp contrast to the bustling halls he had just left—halls he had built stone by stone.
He stared at his trembling hands. For fifty years, these hands had balanced ledgers, refined divine pills in secret, and held the hand of a frightened ten-year-old girl named Xia Ning.
*"Brother Tian, will the Azure Cloud Sect ever be big again?"*
*"Brother Tian, look! I broke through! This is all because of your pills!"*
The memories played like a flickering scroll in his mind. He remembered sharing his last spirit-grain bun with her when they were hiding from debt collectors. He remembered teaching her the basics of leadership while he stayed up until dawn managing the sect's dying trade routes. He had loved her with the quiet, steady devotion of a man who believed they were a team.
Then, the image shattered. Replacing the warmth were those frost-bitten eyes in the council hall. The way she leaned into Ye Fan. The way she called his fifty years of sacrifice "consideration."
"Xia Ning..." Lin Tian whispered, his voice cracking before hardening into something like flint. "You think you've outgrown me. You think you've discarded a useless stone to pick up a piece of gold. You will regret this. I promise you, by the time the sun sets on your glory, you will realize that without me, you are nothing but a beautiful bird with clipped wings."
He took a deep breath, clearing the emotional fog. It was time to stop being a martyr.
"System," he called out internally. "Are you still there? Or did you leave me too?"
**[Ding!]**
**[The Heavenly Tycoon System is always online, Host. I was merely waiting for you to stop acting like a sentimental fool.]**
Lin Tian let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Fair enough. Show me the status. Let's see what's left of me."
**[System Status: Heavenly Tycoon]**
* **Host:** Lin Tian
* **Current Realm:** 3rd Level Foundation Establishment (Suppressed)
* **True Status:** Hidden Alchemy Grandmaster / Sovereign of Trade
* **System Points:** 50,000 (Accumulated from 50 years of secret management)
**[Core Abilities:]**
* **Divine Eye of Investment:** Rank SSS. (Can see the 'Fate Aura' and 'Profit Potential' of any person, sect, or treasure).
* **Monopoly Domain:** Any territory managed by the Host gains a 500% increase in resource production.
* **Celestial Alchemy (Passive):** 100% Success rate for Rank 1–6 Pills.
* **Market Manipulation:** The ability to influence the value of spirit stones and rare materials in a 1,000-mile radius.
**[Current Evaluation:]** An apex predator in a sheep's skin. Host has spent 50 years investing in a "Bad Debt" (Xia Ning). Total loss of emotional capital.
"What do you think, System?" Lin Tian asked, leaning his head back against the cold rock. "What's the move?"
**[Host, I warned you years ago,]** the System's voice echoed with a mechanical sass. **[I explicitly stated that Xia Ning was a 'Low-Return/High-Risk' asset. Her character stats showed a 90% chance of arrogance inflation once she reached the Void Refinement realm. You chose to ignore the data because she was your 'favorite character.']**
Lin Tian closed his eyes. In his previous life on Earth, he had been a titan of industry, a man who could smell a bad deal from a mile away. When he died and reincarnated into the world of "The Rise of the Dragon Sovereign," he recognized the story. He knew Ye Fan was the lucky protagonist. But he had fallen for the "Side Character" Xia Ning. He wanted to change her tragic fate from the original novel, where her parents were murdered and she became a mere concubine in Ye Fan's harem.
He had succeeded. He saved her parents' sect. He made her the most powerful woman in the region. And in doing so, he had become the very "villain" in her eyes—the obstacle to her new love.
"I was a businessman who forgot to check the contract," Lin Tian muttered. "I won't make that mistake again."
**[Host, do you remember Mu Rongxue from two years ago?]** the System asked.
"Rongxue?" Lin Tian's eyes widened slightly. Two years ago, during a secret trade mission to the **Star-Fall Empire**, he had met a young woman leading a dying, 9th Grade sect. She was calm, incredibly intelligent, and had handled a crisis with a grace that even Xia Ning lacked.
**[Correct. Mu Rongxue. Her 'Falling Lotus Sect' is currently the lowest-ranked sect in the Eastern Border. Even beggars do not seek shelter there. However, she carries the 'Golden Aura of Eternal Investment.' If you join her, the returns will be... infinite.]**
Lin Tian stood up, his white hair fluttering.
"The Falling Lotus Sect. It's located in the **Cloud-Mist State**, right? Let's go. I've built a 3rd Grade Sect from scratch once. Doing it again with a 9th Grade Sect will be a walk in the park."
**The Azure Cloud Sect: A Hollow Palace**
Back in the magnificent Council Hall of the Azure Cloud Sect, the celebration had died down. Xia Ning sat on her throne, but for some reason, the jade felt colder than usual. A strange, hollow sensation was gnawing at her chest. She told herself it was just the stress of the day.
Suddenly, the heavy doors swung open. **Elder Han**, the man in charge of the sect's internal resources, rushed in with a panicked expression.
"Sect Leader! I apologize for the interruption, but it is the first of the month," Elder Han said, bowing quickly. "We need the quota for the **Heaven-Cleansing Pills**. The inner disciples are at a critical junction in their training. They need the pills to stabilize their foundations."
Xia Ning frowned. "Why are you asking me? Usually, the Grand Elder handles the distribution."
"But Sect Leader... Lin Tian is gone," Elder Han said, his voice trembling. "And he didn't leave the keys to the secret vault or the delivery schedule for the Alchemy Master."
Xia Ning waved her hand dismissively. "Lin Tian was just a middleman. I have the pills. He gave them to me before the meeting."
She turned to Ye Fan, who was lounging on a side chair, flirting with two young female disciples—**Liu Er** and **Su Mei**, the "Twin Flowers" of the sect.
"Ye Fan," Xia Ning said. "I gave you the storage ring with this month's pill quota to safeguard. Give Elder Han the distribution amount."
Ye Fan froze for a second, then put on a charming, slightly sheepish smile. "Ah, about that, my dear Xia... I noticed that Liu Er and Su Mei were struggling with their bottlenecks. As the new Grand Elder, I thought it best to support our brightest talents. I gave them 20% each. And, well, I needed to solidify my own Nascent Soul, so I consumed 20% myself."
The hall went deathly silent.
"You... you used 60% of the sect's entire monthly quota?" Xia Ning's voice rose, a flicker of anger in her eyes. "Ye Fan, those pills are refined by the 'Hidden Master' specifically for the Foundation and Core Formation disciples! There are only 100 pills a month! You used sixty of them on three people?"
Ye Fan stood up, walking over to Xia Ning and taking her hand. His voice was soft, persuasive. "Xia, don't be so narrow-minded. One Nascent Soul expert like me is worth a thousand Foundation trash disciples. Besides, isn't the 'Hidden Master' your loyal follower? Just ask him for more. Why be so stingy over a few pebbles?"
Elder Han's face turned purple. "Pebbles?! Sect Leader, those pills are the only reason we rose to the 3rd rank! Without them, our breakthrough success rate will drop by 70%! How can Grand Elder Ye be so careless?"
"Careless?" Ye Fan's eyes turned cold, his Nascent Soul pressure flaring. "Are you questioning me, Elder?"
Elder Han gasped, stepping back. He looked at Xia Ning, expecting her to rebuke Ye Fan. But Xia Ning looked at Ye Fan's handsome face, remembered how he had "saved" her life, and sighed.
"Elder Han, be quiet," Xia Ning said, though her heart felt heavier. "Ye Fan is right. His strength is the sect's strength. Go... tell the disciples the delivery was delayed. We will make it up next month."
"Delayed?!" Elder Han exploded, his loyalty finally snapping. "Sect Leader, you are being blinded! Lin Tian never missed a single pill in fifty years! He would starve himself to ensure the disciples had their resources! And now you let this... this newcomer eat the sect's future?"
"Leave!" Xia Ning shouted, her Void Refinement power shaking the room.
Elder Han turned on his heel and stormed out, his heart full of bitterness. As he left, he muttered loud enough for the guards to hear: "The Azure Cloud rose because of a silent dragon, but it will fall because of a loud peacock."
**The Looming Shadow**
Later that night, Xia Ning stood on her balcony, looking toward the distant peaks. The silence was deafening. Usually, at this hour, Lin Tian would bring her a cup of 'Spirit-Calming Tea' and a report on the sect's finances.
Now, there was nothing but the sound of Ye Fan laughing with the other girls in the distance.
"Elder Chen," she called out to the shadows.
A shadowy figure appeared. "Yes, Sect Leader?"
"When exactly does the 'Hidden Alchemy Master' arrive?" Xia Ning asked, her voice tinged with a hidden anxiety. "Lin Tian always said the Master lives in deep seclusion and only delivers the pills to the Grand Elder's chamber on the third day of the month."
"That is correct, Sect Leader," Elder Chen replied. "In two days, the Master should appear."
Xia Ning nodded, trying to calm her racing heart. "Good. When he arrives, I will personally welcome him. I will explain that Lin Tian has been removed for his incompetence. Surely, a Master of his caliber would prefer to deal with a Void Refinement Sect Leader like me rather than a Foundation Establishment waste."
"Let us hope so, Sect Leader," Elder Chen said, though his voice lacked conviction.
"Let us hope he comes fast. Without those pills... the Azure Cloud Sect will start to bleed."
Xia Ning looked out into the dark. For the first time in her life, she felt a cold shiver of doubt.
She didn't know that miles away, the "Hidden Master" was sitting by a campfire, sharing a simple meal with a System, planning the rise of a new empire—and the total bankruptcy of the old one.
