Chapter 3 - AN UNEXPECTED GUEST

The message came without warning.

Adrian stared at his phone for a long moment, his gaze steady, his expression unreadable. It wasn't that he didn't understand what he was seeing.

It was that he understood it too clearly.

"Adrian, I'm coming back. I'll be attending Greenwood University from now on. Dad said I should stay at your place."

Silence settled around him as he read it again, slower this time, as if confirming that the meaning wouldn't change.

"…Stay at my place?"

The words left his mouth quietly, measured, like he was testing their weight rather than questioning them.

His brows narrowed slightly.

Not rejection.

Not acceptance.

Just hesitation.

He typed back, his movements calm and deliberate.

"Did your father really say that?"

The reply came almost instantly.

"Of course. He said you'd take care of me."

Adrian paused, his thumb hovering briefly over the screen before lowering. Something about it felt… decided already. Like the outcome had been determined before he had even been informed.

"…This is getting complicated."

But he didn't refuse.

Because he already knew who she was.

The airport was crowded.

People moved in every direction, voices overlapping, announcements echoing through the wide, open space. The air carried a constant hum of motion and impatience.

But Adrian stood still.

Waiting.

His posture was relaxed, his expression calm, as if he were simply another person passing time.

Then—

he saw her.

A girl walking through the crowd, her presence cutting through the noise without effort. Blonde hair flowed behind her, catching the light with each step. Her features were soft, almost gentle, her expression composed.

But her eyes—

they were steady.

Certain.

Like she already knew exactly where she belonged.

Adrian's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Lily Hart."

Seven years.

And yet he recognized her instantly.

At that exact moment, Lily slowed.

Her eyes locked onto him.

Her steps faltered, then stopped completely.

…Adrian?

Her chest tightened slightly, a faint, unfamiliar pressure building beneath her calm exterior.

He looks different.

More mature.

Sharper.

Without thinking, she raised her hand and waved.

"Adrian!"

And then she ran.

Her suitcase rolled loudly behind her as she pushed through the crowd without hesitation, ignoring everything else in her path. There was no distance in her movement, no restraint, no second thought.

She ran straight toward him.

Like nothing had changed.

[Ding!]

The cold sound cut through Adrian's thoughts as the system activated.

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

[New Mission Assigned]

[Target: Lily Hart]

[Primary: Stabilize Target Emotional State]

[Secondary: Establish exclusive physical intimacy within 7 days]

[Penalty: Emotional collapse via "irreversible personal loss condition"]

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his thoughts paused.

"…So it's layered."

Not just emotion.

Control.

Lily stopped in front of him, closer than expected, her presence immediate and overwhelming in a way that felt natural to her, but not to the situation.

Then she smiled.

"Adrian… you really came."

There was no awkwardness in her voice. No hesitation. It was as if the seven years between them had simply… not existed.

"…It's been a while, Lily."

For a brief moment, she just looked at him.

Then—

she stepped forward and hugged him.

It was natural.

Warm.

Immediate.

There was no hesitation in her movement, no uncertainty in her intent.

Adrian stiffened slightly—just for a moment—before returning the gesture. His arms moved carefully, controlled, measured. He didn't push her away.

But he didn't fully give in either.

A screen appeared above her.

[Target: Lily Hart]

[Favorability: 60 (Love)]

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Sixty?"

That wasn't normal.

That wasn't gradual.

That was already… deep.

A memory surfaced briefly.

A younger version of them, standing beneath an orange sky, laughter echoing softly between them.

"When we go to the same university… let's get married."

"…You really remembered that."

Her voice was softer now, but there was something direct beneath it, something that didn't allow avoidance.

"Did you miss me?"

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"Of course."

A simple answer.

Delivered without pause.

"We were apart for seven years."

Her expression softened immediately, satisfaction settling into her features like something that had finally been confirmed.

Outside, they got into a taxi.

Lily sat close.

Too close.

The space between them barely existed, her presence pressing into his naturally, as if distance itself felt unnecessary to her.

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[Target Favorability Increased: +10]

[Status: Unstable]

Adrian's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Unstable already?"

The system didn't pause.

[SYSTEM WARNING]

[Target Emotional Deviation Increasing]

[Target: Lily Hart]

[Thought Frequency Spike Detected]

[Obsession Seed Formation: 10%]

"…Ten percent?"

Too fast.

This wasn't Emily.

This was acceleration.

If left unchecked—

this wouldn't stabilize.

It would spiral.

Adrian leaned back slightly, his eyes unfocused as his thoughts aligned.

If I pull away, she'll overthink.

If I ignore her, it will worsen.

If I miscalculate—

it collapses.

His fingers shifted slightly, then stilled.

There was only one direction.

Not safe.

Not ideal.

Just necessary.

Adrian reached for her hand.

Their fingers interlocked naturally, warmth passing between them without resistance.

Lily froze for a brief second.

Then she looked down at their hands.

"…Why are you holding my hand?"

There was no rejection in her voice.

Only curiosity.

Adrian met her eyes calmly.

"Because…"

A brief pause.

"…we're getting married someday anyway."

No hesitation.

No embarrassment.

Just quiet certainty.

Lily went silent.

Then her expression softened.

Not surprised.

Relieved.

Like something unsettled inside her had finally found its place.

Her fingers tightened around his.

…He remembers.

Seven years.

And he didn't forget.

Without saying anything, she leaned her head against his shoulder, her body relaxing completely, as if this position was the most natural place she could be.

Like she belonged there.

[Ding!]

[Evaluation: Stabilized (Temporary)]

[Target Status: Controlled]

Adrian exhaled quietly, the tension in his chest easing just slightly.

"…So this is how it works."

Not freedom.

Not control.

Balance.

A careful, fragile balance that required constant adjustment.

Because now he understood something clearly.

With someone like Lily, passivity wasn't peace.

It was risk.

And control—

wasn't kindness.

It was survival.

But even then, this wasn't stable.

It only felt that way.

Because it was contained.

For now.
