Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The Mentor

Kevin stood in the bustling kitchen of the Krusty Krab, his Toon Form on full display as he worked alongside Colette and SpongeBob. It was already 9:30 PM, only half an hour until closing and the dinner rush had died down to a few lingering customers.

When he had first walked in earlier that evening in his cartoonish green-tinted Toon Form, the entire staff had frozen in shock.

SpongeBob's eyes had bulged out comically, Colette nearly dropped a plate, and the new hires Horst and Pompidou stared like they'd seen a ghost.

Kevin had simply laughed and reassured them, "Relax, everyone. It's still me. I have the power to switch between my Noid and Toon forms whenever I want. This is just the Toon version. I'm fine."

After the initial surprise wore off, the team accepted it surprisingly quickly, this was a world full of toons, after all.

Now, with the kitchen running smoothly and no new orders coming in, Kevin washed his hands and stepped out of the kitchen.

"You two got this," he told Colette and SpongeBob. "I'll be at the club for a bit. Call me if anything comes up."

He changed into fresh clothes in his office and walked next door to the Ink & Paint Club. The place was lively tonight. The event Holli had mentioned was in full swing, the club was packed with toons and Noids laughing, drinking, and chatting under dim, colorful lights.

Kevin made his way backstage. Holli spotted him immediately and lit up.

"Kevin!" She hurried over and kissed his cheek. She turned to the two women beside her. "You already know Jessica. This is my friend Raven, Raven Sinclair."

Raven, a striking woman with dark hair and a confident smile, extended her hand. "Nice to meet you, Kevin."

Before Kevin could reply, Jessica Rabbit's voice, a husky purr that could melt ice, cut in, "Holli, why is Kevin in toon form? Wasn't he a Noide just last month? Was he... was he killed by a toon?" Her voice held a genuine tremor of concern beneath its usual sultry tone.

Holli turned to Kevin with sudden worry. "Wait, she's right. I didn't even notice because we've been so busy with each other. What happened?"

Kevin smiled reassuringly and squeezed her hand. "It's okay. It's one of my powers. I can switch between Noid and Toon forms whenever I want. I'm perfectly fine."

Before anyone could ask more questions, the backstage door opened again. A slender white rabbit with large blue eyes, a pink nose, a tuft of red hair, red overalls, yellow gloves, and a blue bow tie with yellow polka dots bounced in.

"Jess-i-ca!" the rabbit exclaimed, practically bouncing with energy. He enveloped Jessica in a hug before turning to the others. "Evening, everyone! Hope I'm not late."

"Roger!" Jessica purred, ruffling his ears gently. "No, you're just in time. Everyone, this is my wonderful husband, Roger Rabbit."

Roger, ever the gentleman, went around shaking hands, his movements a blur of friendly enthusiasm. "A pleasure, a pleasure!"

Kevin shook his hand with a friendly smile. "Good to meet you, Roger."

After a few minutes of light conversation, Kevin excused himself. "I have to meet someone here tonight. I'll catch up with you all later."

He left the backstage area and found a quiet corner table with a good view of the stage.

He texted the number he had been given for his mentor, letting them know he was waiting at the corner table.

While waiting, Roger suddenly appeared nearby, looking around.

Roger smiled gratefully and sat down. "Hiya Kevin! Can I grab this seat for a quick second? Waiting for someone myself, and they haven't shown up yet. Just for a bit."

Kevin waved. "Come sit if you want. I'm waiting for someone too."

Roger slid into the chair, pulling out his own sleek, futuristic phone. He glanced at the screen, a small frown playing on his lips, before typing out a quick message. Kevin, still checking his own empty inbox, happened to catch a glimpse of Roger's screen. The conversation on display, with its distinctive blue bubbles, scrolled past. His eyes snagged on a phrase, then another.

"...mentor for toon force…"

"…waiting at the corner table…"

A jolt of recognition, cold and precise, shot through Kevin. He slowly lowered his phone, a wry smile creeping onto his face. "Wait… by any chance, are you looking for someone you're supposed to teach Toon Force to?"

Roger blinked, then looked shocked. "Yes! How did you—?"

Kevin just smiled. Roger stared at him for a second, then facepalmed dramatically.

"Oh no… So you were supposed to be my student?"

They both laughed at the coincidence just as the stage lights brightened. Jessica Rabbit and Raven stepped onto the stage for their duet. The crowd cheered as the two performers began a smooth, seductive song together.

Kevin and Roger stopped talking and simply enjoyed the performance. After the duet ended, Raven took the microphone for one of her famous storytelling sessions, a strange but beloved tradition at the most of the clubs here.

After the applause died down, Raven stepped forward, her voice a rich, smoky contralto that effortlessly commanded attention. "Good evening everyone! Tonight, I have a tale for you..."

As Raven's captivating voice filled the room with a mysterious tale, Kevin and Roger continued their conversation in low tones.

"So, where should we practice?" Kevin asked.

"My house in Springfield would be perfect," Roger replied. "It's quiet and has plenty of space for chaotic Toon Force training."

They agreed on weekends for the main sessions, with flexibility for emergencies. Roger promised to start with basic control exercises to help Kevin unlock and understand his dormant Toon Force.
