Chapter 174 - 174: The Vital Pulse Trap

Dex stepped back a pace and slipped his hand into the inner pocket of his cloak, his fingers tracing the cold, smooth surface of the small crystal vial containing the Sacred Nectar, the extract of the World Tree, the legendary antidote he had wagered his life to obtain. He was ready to end this nightmare now.

But while Dex prepared to extract the antidote and uncork it, Lumia moved with extreme caution around the marble bed. She was not looking at Marcus, she was examining with meticulous care the strange magical and mechanical instruments surrounding him. These were no ordinary medical devices like those found in the capital's hospitals; they were a complex and disturbing blend of mechanical engineering, magical crystals, and black runic lines pulsing with a faint light.

Suddenly, in a motion too swift for the human eye to catch, Lumia seized Dex's wrist in a cold iron grip, precisely at the moment he was about to tip the vial over his father's mouth.

"Stop, Dex! Stop immediately!" Lumia whispered in a voice sharp as ice. "You cannot heal him now, not the complete healing you are planning."

Dex looked at her sharply, his eyes blazing with the fury of a severed moment, unable to comprehend her intervention. "What do you mean? You said his core is drying out! Every second brings him closer to the point of no return and death. The antidote is in my hand, let us end this."

Lumia did not retreat before his anger. She pointed her slender finger at an extremely fine metal bracelet, barely visible, secured tightly around Marcus's left wrist, and at a chain of small crystals, clear as glass, fixed by fine silver pins into the marble directly above his chest, precisely above the position of his core.

"Look at these sensors carefully, Dex, and use your Sight to see beyond the metal," Lumia explained quickly, passing her hand slowly above the instruments without actually touching them, her silver energy revealing a complex network of red binding mana lines emanating from the bracelet and crystals toward the vault's ceiling. "They are not designed to monitor his health for the purpose of saving him. They are designed to monitor the 'level of incapacitation', or more precisely, to monitor any 'sudden improvement.'"

Lumia continued her brilliant analysis, her voice taking on a tone of dark admiration for the trap's complexity: "These devices are connected directly, and wirelessly through mana waves, to the palace's main alarm network. Sylvester, in his diseased suspicion and the paranoia of betrayal that blinds him, has programmed a conditional trigger into this array. If the heart rate rises suddenly to indicate recovery, or if the crystals detect that the mana core has reclaimed its energy or begun to overcome the poison in a short time, the magical alarms throughout the entire palace will sound instantly. The system will interpret that as external intervention to save the Duke."

Dex froze where he stood, the blood draining from his face as he grasped the scale of the catastrophe he had been about to commit. "A smart cage..." he muttered with bitterness. "He is not merely waiting for his death, he wants to guarantee his death even if someone somehow manages, by some miracle, to bypass the guards and shadow killers and reach this place. The real trap was inside my father's body itself."

Dex bit his lower lip with force until he tasted the salt of blood. The situation was maddeningly complex. The antidote he possessed, drops of the World Tree's Nectar, was far too powerful and fantastically concentrated. A single drop was capable of producing a biological and energetic revolution in Marcus's body, an immediate explosion of vitality and purity that would expel the poison violently, a magical electromagnetic burst impossible to conceal from sensitive detection instruments like these.

"We face two lethal choices then," said Dex, running his hand through his hair, his mind working with the speed of a besieged military commander. "Either we leave him to die, which is an impossible and absolutely rejected option. Or we heal him completely now, and face an entire army of palace guards, mercenaries, and shadow killers while trapped deep underground, with my father still in rapid convalescence, too weak to fight with us or even to flee."

"There is a third option, Dex," said Lumia, her silver eyes gleaming with a sharp intelligence and cosmic cunning befitting a being who had lived thousands of years. "An option that demands a surgeon's precision and a sniper's patience. Do not 'heal' him in the sense of restoring full energy and a vital explosion. Perform a 'foundation repair' only."

Dex looked at her with a question mixed with hope, waiting for elaboration.

Lumia continued in a lowered voice: "The World Tree's Nectar is not merely a chemical antidote that eliminates poisons, it is a primal building material, the raw essence of life itself. Rather than using it as a single dose to detonate its power and purge the poison all at once in an open war that would destroy the instruments, use your mana control to dilute the Nectar. Use it as a slow and covert catalytic agent. Make the antidote infiltrate the cells drop by drop, quietly repairing the damaged tissue of the heart, and isolating the poison in small pockets rather than fighting and expelling it immediately."

Lumia drew closer, her eyes widening with enthusiasm for the plan: "We will make his body recover 'from the bottom upward,' covertly. He will build new immunity and strengthen the core very slowly, without raising the overall mana level in a way that triggers the alarm. To Sylvester's instruments, Lord Marcus will appear to still be dying slowly, but in reality, he will be in the process of building a new army inside his own body."

Dex smiled, a bloody, harsh, and savage smile that his young features had never known before. He had understood the game.

"I understand," said Dex, looking at the vial in his hand as though it were a weapon of mass destruction. "We give him the weapon and let him complete the war from within, killing the poison slowly, under the radar, in the darkness."

Dex drew out the crystal vial and uncorked it with extreme care. The plan was clear and perfect now: plant the seed of life and resistance in the deepest point of the dying body, and depart in silence like a ghost on the wind, before the treacherous farmer Sylvester could realize that the scorched earth he was standing on had been stolen from beneath his feet, and that the harvest of death he had been awaiting had transformed into seeds of a vengeance that would burn his world to ash.
