Chapter 183 - 183: The Mystery of the Blue Flames

Lord Marcus descended with extreme slowness and a majesty befitting the gods of ancient legend from the heart of the golden tempest that had raged through the Chamber of Stillness, until his feet touched the shattered marble floor. His feet were bare, yet the moment his soles made contact with the cold, cracked stone, something happened that transcended familiar laws of physics.

A visible pulse wave of pure golden energy spread from beneath his feet like the roots of a colossal tree of light, penetrating the cracks in the floor, climbing the collapsing walls, and reaching the ceiling that had been on the verge of falling. In a fraction of a second, this energy stabilized the entire space.

The cascade of falling debris froze in midair, and the vault settled as though time itself had been frozen by a single word from this man. The place was no longer on the brink of collapse, it had come under the dominion of the Imperial Domain of a Natural Disaster standing on the threshold of rank SSS.

Marcus drew a deep breath, his broad chest rising and falling with slow and majestic deliberateness. He filled his lungs, dormant and poisoned for long months, with the room's mana-saturated air. With this first inhalation, he felt a cascade of life flow through his pathways.

He felt strength surge through every vein, every artery, every cell of his body. It was not merely physical strength, it was cosmic sight. He felt the movement of dust particles, the vibrations of air molecules, and the pulse of the deep earth beneath the palace.

He understood with complete clarity that he had not merely healed, he had pierced the ceiling of his human limits. Even in the prime of his youth, in the days of his military glory when he was known as "the Lion of the West" and led armies across plains of blood, he had never felt this savage vitality and absolute dominion over the elements.

Yet, in a manner that inspired astonishment, the first thing to capture Marcus's attention after fully reclaiming his consciousness and the veil of the coma lifting, was not his new divine power, nor the destruction that had befallen the secret vault, nor even the presence of the strange silver-haired girl (Lumia) standing in the corner enveloped in a terrifying void aura. His eyes, which had returned to their natural deep blue yet still retained a hidden golden radiance, were fixed entirely on the young man standing directly before him.

"Dex..." Marcus's voice cracked as he spoke his son's name. It was not the weak or trembling voice of a convalescing patient, it was deep, rough, and majestic, like the grinding sound of colossal mountain rocks deep in the earth.

In a motion far too fast for an ordinary human eye to follow, with the instinct of a seasoned warrior awakening in an unknown environment, Marcus's rough hand shot out like a steel vice and seized his son's right wrist with sudden and violent force. The grip carried the weight of a mountain.

The pressure of the clasp nearly crushed Dex's wrist bone to powder in a fraction of a second, had it not been for Dex's immediate instinctive response. In the same moment of contact, and at an equal speed, Dex enveloped his entire arm in a dense and compressed layer of Blue Phoenix Mana, transforming his skin and bones into something resembling a shield of solidified flame to withstand his father's pressure.

Marcus raised his son's restrained arm upward, bringing it to eye level, examining it with deep astonishment and mounting suspicion that rose like black smoke. The blue flames danced around Dex's arm, writhing and pressing against Marcus's golden aura without extinguishing or retreating.

They growled with cold menace, as though they were a living entity that refused to yield even to the greatest power in the world.

"This mana..." Marcus began with absolute sternness, his sharp and frightening gaze cutting through Dex's blue eyes, attempting to dive into the depths of his soul and read what lay hidden. "It does not belong to the Williams family. It belongs neither to our blood, nor to our history, nor to the land we govern."

Marcus paused for a moment, his analytical mind, that of a military commander, retrieving memories from the distant past. "I was present the day of your birth, Dex. Your first cry shook the palace walls. And in your fifth year, in my capacity as Duke of this province, I summoned the senior mages of the Imperial Palace and the priests of the Temple of Balance to examine your spiritual core.

They spent days studying your pathways, and all of them confirmed, categorically and without exception, that your core possessed a complete and innate affinity with the elements of Earth and Water. That was your genetic nature. Earth for the Williams family's solidity in the face of enemies, and Water for the flexibility of the mind in politics and war. That was your natural gift, inherited from your ancestors and from me personally."

Marcus tightened his grip slightly around Dex's blue-flaming wrist and brought his face closer until his warm breath struck his son's face. His eyes were narrowing with intense focus. "But this that I see now... this accursed blue flame... it makes me feel as though a cold sun, a dead sun that refuses to go out, is burning inside my room and in the blood of my son.

This flame, it is terrifyingly pure, savagely boundless, and so arrogant that it is attempting to devour the golden mana of my own leaking from my hand. It resembles no fire I have ever seen in my life, not the red flames of the Empire's mages, and not the black fires of the dark elves."

Marcus released his son's wrist slowly and stepped back half a pace, but his eyes did not leave Dex's face. "You know the ancient laws of magic in this world as well as I do, my son, or perhaps less. A person's elements do not change simply, as a noble changes his shirt.

They do not shift through brutal training, nor by drinking potions, nor even through exposure to lethal physical trauma. The elements are the essence of the soul, and elements only change if something has shaken the very fabric of the soul to its foundations, something that destroyed the spiritual structure and rebuilt it from nothing."

Marcus's final question hung in the room's heavy air, carrying the anxiety of a father who feared his son might have paid a demonic price for this power, but also carrying the cold doubt of a warrior-commander who accepts no unknown variables. Marcus knew well that his son Dex, before the supposed assassination attempt, had been virtually "giftless" in terms of violent combat, merely a young noble lacking the ironclad will required to reach high levels of magical mastery.

How had this weak young man transformed overnight into someone bearing a blue fire that made even an SS+ rank holder, considered a god among men, feel a primal dread and a shiver down his spine at its touch? Was this truly Dex? Or had some other entity, an ancient specter from the ages of darkness, occupied his son's body and seized his memories? That was the harrowing question circling in the awakened Lion's mind, awaiting an answer that might determine the fate of their relationship forever.
