Chapter 222 - 222: The Heir's Ring

After three full days of hard and continuous work, night and day without rest, the historic fortress of Seiron had reclaimed its ancient calm and imposing solemnity.

Its courtyards had been completely cleansed of the traces of blood and destruction, the shattered walls repaired with magic and stone, and the guards loyal to Sylvester replaced by new elements chosen with extreme care for their absolute loyalty to Seiron and to the Williams family.

On the morning of the fourth day, with the rising of the sun, the enormous bronze bells of the fortress tolled with a resonant and harmonious sound, its echo reverberating through the surrounding valleys. It was no alarm for war this time, but a sacred, formal summons to a great assembly: a gathering to redraw the province's future.

The Great Hall within the palace, which had long witnessed in its dark corners the murmured conspiracies of Sylvester and his allies, was now shining in its finest form. The high stone walls were draped with dark blue banners bearing the golden lion's crest.

The stained glass windows reflected the morning light to paint it in warm colors across the polished marble floor.

The hall was teeming with attendees, not an inch of standing room remained. All the leaders of the subsidiary clans from throughout the province had come in their formal attire, the cavalry regiment commanders in their gleaming medal-covered armor.

The new senior merchants who had proven their integrity, the representatives of craftsmen's guilds, and most importantly, elected representatives from the common people and the farmers. Everyone had come from every corner, laden with hopes and expectations, to offer loyalty and renew their covenant with the victorious leadership.

At the head of the vast hall, on a platform raised several steps, stood the ancient throne crafted from rare cedar wood inlaid with pure gold and emerald. On this throne sat Lord Marcus Williams.

The scene was magnificent to a breathtaking degree. Marcus no longer appeared as that sick, emaciated, pale man who had been slowly dying in his bed weeks ago. He had reclaimed his full magical and physical health.

His thick gray hair was carefully styled and swept back like a lion's mane, his beard trimmed with dignity. He wore a complete and ornate armor gleaming under the lights, with a crimson royal cape draping from his broad shoulders. More important than his outward appearance was his aura, an aura of power at rank SS+: a rank reached only by the absolute elite across the Empire in its entirety.

This aura was not visible to the naked eye, but it was felt. It filled the vast hall with a gentle, warm, yet simultaneously overwhelming and majestic, pressure, reminding everyone without a single word that the man seated before them was the living legend: the unconquerable Lion of the West.

And directly beside the throne, standing upright with pride, was Dex. The young man wore a formal suit crafted specifically for him representing the future greatness of the Williams family: a pitch-black jacket, embroidered with exquisite precision in silver and blue threads forming patterns resembling phoenix wings.

Dex wore no crown and carried no drawn sword, yet his calm bearing and the piercing gaze of his eyes overflowed with a royalty and a magnetism surpassing any crown forged from gold. The visual contrast and spiritual harmony between the father seated with mountain-like gravity and the son standing like a calm and sacred fire was a painting radiating power and stability.

Marcus raised his right hand slowly, and the Great Hall fell silent at once. Thousands of people held their breath, and heads bowed in respect and reverence awaiting the Duke's first word.

"Noble people of Seiron, loyal companions in arms, faithful sons of my province—"

Marcus began his address. His voice was commanding and deep, reverberating through the hall's chambers like quiet thunder.

"In the past months, a fierce black storm swept over us, a storm that nearly uprooted our foundations and destroyed everything we built across generations. We learned a harsh and painful lesson: that the betrayal of a brother and the treachery of a close kinsman is harder and more agonizing than the sword of an external enemy.

We tasted the bitterness of fear, but today we stand here, we survived thanks to the blood of the loyal knights and citizens who sacrificed their lives, and we survived thanks to, a miracle I never anticipated."

Marcus paused briefly, and turned to look at Dex. The harsh and warrior's expression dissolved from his eyes, replaced by a warm, sincere, paternal smile, filled with an immeasurable and indescribable pride.

"I have governed this great land for long decades. I fought demonic beasts in the dark mountains, repelled invaders from our borders, and built the walls. I believed myself the sole protector of you all. But today, before you all, and with complete humility, I confess one single truth:

I failed to protect you from the enemy who slept under my own roof. And I would not be standing among you today, and Seiron would not have been liberated, were it not for the courage, intelligence, and power of this young man standing beside me."

Marcus extended his left hand before everyone, and with a slow, deliberate motion, removed a large and ancient ring from his index finger. This was the Lion's Eye Ring. It was no mere piece of jewelry, it was a priceless artifact crafted from pure magical gold, at its center a massive red ruby radiating an inner light, surrounded by a raised engraving of a roaring lion.

This ring is the symbol of absolute authority in the province, the sole magical key controlling the defensive arrays of the city's walls, and the official seal that makes any document an irrevocable law.

The commanders and senior mages in the hall gasped. They had grasped the true meaning of this motion. The handing over of the ring in the Duke's lifetime was something that had never once occurred in the family's history. Was Lord Marcus about to abdicate his throne willingly, at the very peak of his power?

Marcus seized Dex's right hand and raised it high before the astonished eyes of all.

"Dex has proven, in the most difficult moments and the darkest of days, that he is not merely my son of flesh and blood, but has proven with conclusive evidence that his will is stronger than mine, his heart purer, and his mind wiser and more judicious.

He faced lethal poison and returned victorious, he faced the greatest treason and crushed it without mercy. And most importantly, he faced the temptation of power and gold yesterday, and abstained from them to feed his people."

Marcus lowered his hand, and with slow, solemn care, placed the Lion's Eye Ring on Dex's right index finger. The moment the ring settled in its place, Dex felt a warm magical pulse flow through his veins, as though the ring were recognizing him as the new master, and for a moment, hazy images of the city's walls and their complex magical mechanisms flooded his mind.

"From this historic moment, on this auspicious day, I declare Dex Williams the sole legitimate heir to the throne of Seiron, and the actual and absolute commander of the Western Province's administrative affairs," Marcus announced in a decisive voice admitting no debate.

"I will remain the sword of the Empire defending the borders, but the governance of the city and its people is a trust upon his shoulders. From this moment, his word is my word, his decision is my decision, and his sword is my sword.

Whoever obeys him and follows his commands has obeyed me and preserved my goodwill, and whoever defies him or dares to challenge him has invited the Lion's wrath upon himself and his family's descendants forever."

A sacred silence reigned for a single second, before Commander Okon moved. He stepped one pace forward, placed his right fist on his chest over his heart, and knelt slowly with complete military discipline before Dex.

"My soul and my sword in sacrifice for the Heir!" Okon cried out.

That was the signal. Like waves of the sea breaking on the shore in rhythmic succession, the cavalry regiment commanders followed with their kneeling, then the subsidiary clan leaders who bowed their proud heads, then the senior merchants, until the vast hall was entirely kneeling, thousands of people bowing as one body in reverence and homage.

"Glory to the young Lord! Glory to Dex Williams! Long live the Williams family!"

The voices thundered like a storm, shaking the walls of the ancient palace, announcing the beginning of a new era.

Dex looked downward at the kneeling crowds, then raised his right hand and gazed at the glowing red ruby in the Lion's Eye Ring.

He felt in that moment an indescribable weight, a weight not arising from the magical gold encircling his finger, but the weight of the souls and fates of hundreds of thousands of human beings, families, children, and soldiers who had now become suspended from his decisions and under his direct responsibility.

Dex clenched his fist with force until his knuckles went white, embracing this weight with complete acceptance. He raised his eyes to meet his father's proud ones, and gave a slow, deep, unwavering nod.

It was not merely a gesture of gratitude, it was a sacred promise, and a silent oath, to protect this great legacy and lead Seiron toward a glory it had never known before. Even if it cost him burning the entire world with his phoenix flames.
