Chapter 70 - CHAPTER 70: PROOF OF EXISTENCE

Silence had become dangerous.

Not because it meant nothing—

but because it could mean anything was missing.

Kelvin

Kelvin stood very still.

He didn't call out again.

He learned that calling didn't guarantee presence.

"…We need a rule," he said quietly.

Laura

Laura looked at him.

"What kind of rule?"

Kelvin answered:

"A way to confirm who is actually here."

Kael

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"You want verification protocol," he said.

Kelvin nodded.

"Yes."

System reaction

USER-DEVELOPED COUNTERMEASURE DETECTED

Kelvin frowned.

"…It's listening again."

Keira

Keira stepped closer.

"…What if it ignores the rule?" she asked softly.

Kelvin paused.

"…Then we make a stronger one."

Nancy (still unseen, but present)

A faint voice came—

delayed.

"…You're thinking like it's human," Nancy said.

Kelvin turned sharply.

"Nancy?"

Silence.

Then—

"…I'm here," her voice came again, slightly offset in timing.

Kelvin relief

"…Okay," he exhaled.

"We need structure."

The plan begins

Kelvin looked at Kael first.

"Say something only you would say."

Kael blinked once.

"I do not rely on uncertainty for conclusion."

Kelvin nodded.

"Good."

He turned to Laura.

"Your turn."

Laura

Laura thought for a moment.

Then:

"If I don't question it, I don't trust it."

Kelvin nodded again.

Keira

Keira hesitated.

"…I don't know what to say," she whispered.

Kelvin softened slightly.

"Say what you feel."

Keira looked down.

Then quietly:

"I'm scared of disappearing."

System reaction

EMOTIONAL VARIANCE RECONFIRMED

IDENTITY SIGNATURES RECORDED

Kelvin final step

Kelvin took a breath.

"…Now we repeat."

He looked around.

"One voice at a time. No guessing. No assumption."

A pause.

"If you hear someone, they answer their signature."

First test

Kelvin spoke:

"Kael."

Kael answered immediately.

"Present."

No delay.

No distortion.

Second test

Kelvin:

"Laura."

Laura responded:

"Here."

Slight delay—but consistent.

Third test (risk moment)

Kelvin hesitated.

"…Keira."

Silence.

Longer than before.

Kelvin's chest tightened.

"…Keira?"

Then—

her voice:

"I'm here."

But it came slightly off timing.

Still present.

But unstable.

System reaction

SIGNATURE PROTOCOL ACCEPTED

PERCEPTION LINK STABILIZED (PARTIAL)

Kelvin realization

"…It worked," he whispered.

Kael nodded.

"Partially."

Nancy interruption

Nancy's voice came again—

stronger now.

"…I can hear you more clearly," she said.

Kelvin turned.

"Nancy—are you stable?"

A pause.

"…I think so," she replied.

Laura warning

Laura frowned.

"…This won't last."

Kelvin looked at her.

"Why?"

Laura answered:

"Because the system will learn the rule."

Kael confirms

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"It will adapt to identification."

System escalation

COUNTERMEASURE ANALYZED

ADAPTIVE RESPONSE INITIATED

Kelvin realization

"…So we don't have time," he said.

Kael replied:

"Correct."

Final moment

For a brief moment—

they could all still reach each other.

Not perfectly.

Not safely.

But enough to confirm:

They were still there.

Still separate.

Still real.

And Kelvin understood something critical:

The system wasn't just breaking them apart.

It was learning how they refused to stay apart.
