Chapter 23 - The Stolen Scroll - The Secret of the Scroll

The courtyard of Gurukul Tapovan remained awake long after midnight.

Oil lamps burned outside every hut.

Senior disciples quietly searched the grounds while younger students slept, unaware of the danger surrounding them.

No one spoke loudly.

The teachers wanted to protect the peace of the gurukul for as long as they could.

Tez stood beside Rishi Anand, thinking about everything he had seen in the ruined shrine.

Arvan...

The kind traveler who had smiled at everyone...

was The Raven.

It was difficult to believe.

"You were right to trust your instincts," Rishi Anand said quietly.

"But remember, Tez..."

"An enemy is most dangerous when he wears the face of a friend."

Tez nodded.

"I understand now."

Before sunrise, Acharya Vedant called Tez, Rishi Anand, and three senior disciples to the library.

He carefully closed the heavy wooden doors behind them.

No one else was allowed inside.

The old teacher walked toward a stone wall behind the bookshelves.

He placed his hand on a carved lotus.

A soft grinding sound echoed through the room.

Slowly, a hidden section of the wall moved aside.

Behind it was a small chamber lit by a single oil lamp.

Tez stared in amazement.

"I never knew this room existed."

"Very few people do," Acharya Vedant replied.

"This chamber has protected the history of the Guardians of the Eternal Flame for centuries."

Inside were old maps, clay seals, copper plates, and bundles of palm-leaf manuscripts.

Everything had been carefully preserved.

Acharya Vedant picked up an ancient copper plate covered with beautiful Sanskrit inscriptions.

"This is older than our gurukul itself," he said.

"It tells the beginning of a forgotten story."

The Acharya gently placed the copper plate on a wooden table.

"Many centuries ago," he began, "when Bharat was divided into many kingdoms, knowledge was considered more valuable than gold."

"Wise teachers travelled from one kingdom to another."

"They carried medicine, science, astronomy, philosophy, and sacred teachings."

"But not every ruler respected wisdom."

"Some desired knowledge only to gain power."

Tez listened carefully.

"So the Guardians protected that knowledge?"

"Yes."

"They were not kings."

"They were not conquerors."

"They were protectors."

"They believed that wisdom should serve humanity, never pride."

Rishi Anand added,

"They came from different kingdoms, different families, and different traditions."

"But they were united by one promise."

"What promise?" Tez asked.

Acharya Vedant answered,

"To keep the Eternal Flame alive."

Tez looked puzzled.

"I still don't understand what the Eternal Flame is."

The Acharya smiled.

"It is not an ordinary flame."

"It is a symbol."

"A symbol of truth..."

"...wisdom..."

"...and righteousness."

"It reminds every generation that knowledge must be used with compassion."

He paused before continuing.

"To protect their greatest secrets, the Guardians divided them into two parts."

He picked up a small cloth and unfolded it.

Inside was a simple drawing.

One side showed a rolled manuscript.

The other showed a leather pouch.

"The first part was the Scroll of Agni."

"The second..."

He looked directly at Tez.

"...was placed inside a leather pouch."

Tez instinctively touched the pouch hidden beneath his clothes.

"My father knew."

"Yes."

"Devadatta was chosen because he was a man of honesty and courage."

Tez's eyes filled with emotion.

"He never told me."

"He could not."

"The fewer people who knew, the safer the secret remained."

Tez lowered his head.

"So... my family died protecting this secret."

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Finally, Rishi Anand answered softly,

"They died protecting hope."

"They believed that one day, the right person would carry the responsibility forward."

Tez's voice trembled.

"What if I am not that person?"

The sage looked into his eyes.

"Do you remember the injured deer you saved?"

"Yes."

"Did you help it because someone ordered you to?"

"No."

"Do you remember risking your life to save little Govind during the storm?"

"Yes."

"Did you do it because you wanted praise?"

"No."

Rishi Anand smiled.

"That is why you are worthy."

"A person's destiny is not decided by birth."

"It is decided by character."

Tez remained silent.

For the first time since the destruction of Suryanagari, he stopped asking,

'Why did this happen to me?'

Instead, he began asking,

'What must I do now?'

Acharya Vedant carefully rolled up the drawing.

"There is one more truth you must know."

"The Scroll of Agni alone cannot reveal the hidden sanctuary."

"Neither can the leather pouch."

"They are incomplete."

"When joined together..."

"They reveal the path to Agni-Kshetra."

"What is Agni-Kshetra?" Tez asked.

The Acharya looked toward the small oil lamp burning in the chamber.

"It is not a palace."

"It is not a treasury."

"It is a hidden sanctuary created by the Guardians."

"A place where the greatest knowledge of ancient Bharat was protected."

"Knowledge that could heal kingdoms..."

"...or destroy them if it fell into the wrong hands."

Tez understood why the Order of the Black Eclipse was desperate to obtain both keys.

They were not searching for wealth.

They were searching for power.

At that moment, a knock sounded on the library door.

One of the senior disciples entered hurriedly.

"Acharya!"

"What is it?"

"We have searched the entire gurukul."

"And?"

"We found something unusual."

He placed an iron key on the table.

"It was hidden beneath the western gate."

Rishi Anand picked it up.

"This belongs to our outer gate."

The disciple nodded.

"There are no signs of forced entry."

"The gate was unlocked..."

"...from inside."

The room became silent.

Tez looked from the key to the teachers.

"You mean..."

Rishi Anand finished the sentence.

"Someone inside the gurukul helped the enemy."

"But who?" Tez asked.

"We trust everyone here."

Acharya Vedant sighed.

"That is what worries me."

Later that evening, Tez walked alone through the quiet gardens.

The weight of the leather pouch felt heavier than ever.

He sat beneath the same mango plant that Acharya Vedant had once used to teach patience.

He closed his eyes.

"I promise you, Father," he whispered.

"I will protect this secret."

"I don't know where this path will lead."

"I don't know if I am strong enough."

"But I will never let your sacrifice be forgotten."

A gentle breeze moved through the leaves above him.

For a brief moment, Tez felt as though his father's presence was beside him.

It gave him strength.

He stood up with renewed determination.

No matter what lay ahead...

He would not run from his destiny.

Far away, hidden beneath the roots of an ancient banyan tree outside the gurukul, a narrow underground passage stretched into darkness.

A cloaked figure walked silently through the tunnel.

In his hands rested the Scroll of Agni.

He stopped before a stone door carved with the symbol of a black eclipse.

Removing the hood from his head, he smiled.

It was The Raven.

"So..."

he whispered,

"They have finally begun to remember the truth."

He carefully placed the stolen scroll into a wooden case.

"But they are already too late."

The stone door slowly opened.

Darkness waited beyond it.
