Chapter 36 - The Mountain of Echoes - The Mountain that Remembered

The final echo of Tez's name faded slowly into the valley.

"Tez..."

Then there was silence.

Not the peaceful silence of a forest at night.

This silence felt watchful.

As if the mountain itself had become aware of their presence.

Tez stood beneath the ancient stone pillars, staring into the dark valley.

His hand remained closed around the Guardian Seal.

It had become strangely warm.

Vaidehi noticed.

"Your seal..."

Tez opened his palm.

The small object was glowing faintly.

A soft golden light pulsed from its center.

Naman stepped closer.

"It wasn't glowing before."

Tez nodded.

"I know."

Acharya Somdev's words returned to his mind.

"The sanctuaries recognize intention before opening."

But what intention was the mountain recognizing?

And why had it called his name?

The First Step into the Mountain

Bhaskar looked at the others.

"We should not enter tonight."

Keshav immediately agreed.

"For once, I strongly support that idea."

Veer laughed quietly.

"You were the one who wanted adventure."

"Adventure is different when the mountain starts speaking."

Despite the danger, a few smiles appeared.

But Tez remained serious.

"We can't wait."

Bhaskar looked at him.

"Why?"

Tez pointed toward the distant golden light.

"Whatever awakened the sanctuary happened recently."

"If the Black Eclipse is already inside, every hour we wait gives them more time."

Bhaskar knew he was right.

After a brief discussion, they decided to enter.

They tied a strong rope between the members of the group so that no one would become separated in the darkness.

Vaidehi walked near Tez.

Naman followed closely behind.

The valley swallowed them.

The path became narrower as they went deeper.

The walls on both sides rose like enormous black cliffs.

Moonlight could no longer reach the ground.

Only their lamps provided light.

The wind moved strangely through the rocks.

Sometimes it sounded like a whisper.

Sometimes like a distant cry.

Keshav looked around nervously.

"Do you think the stories about this place are true?"

Somesh answered quietly.

"What stories?"

"That the mountain remembers people."

Somesh glanced at the walls.

"I don't know."

Then he added,

"But I would not be surprised."

After nearly an hour, they found a small clearing.

A narrow stream flowed through it.

Everyone stopped to drink.

Aditi checked the water carefully before allowing the others to fill their vessels.

Tez sat on a flat stone.

He looked exhausted.

Vaidehi sat beside him.

"You've been quiet."

Tez gave a faint smile.

"I am thinking."

"About your father?"

"About everything."

He looked toward the mountain.

"The first time I came here, I thought I was searching for answers."

"And now?"

Tez looked at the Guardian Seal.

"Now I'm beginning to think the answers may be searching for me."

Vaidehi smiled softly.

"That sounds like something my grandfather would say."

Tez laughed.

"He is becoming difficult to escape."

"So am I."

Tez looked at her.

Vaidehi smiled.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she quietly added,

"You don't have to carry everything alone."

Tez's smile faded into something more thoughtful.

"I have spent a long time alone."

"I know."

"And sometimes I still feel like I am."

Vaidehi looked at him.

"Then look around."

Tez did.

Naman was helping Keshav fill the water vessels.

Aditi was preparing herbs.

Bhaskar was checking the rope.

Everyone was there.

Vaidehi continued,

"You aren't alone anymore."

Tez looked at her for several seconds.

"Thank you."

She nodded.

"Always."

Neither realized how important that simple word would become.

The Hidden Passage

They continued after resting.

Soon, Tez noticed something strange.

The Guardian Seal was glowing more brightly.

He followed its direction.

It led toward a large stone wall.

"There is something behind this."

Bhaskar examined the wall.

"It looks solid."

Tez placed his palm against the stone.

The golden light spread across its surface.

A faint symbol appeared.

Seven flames surrounding a lotus.

Vaidehi stepped forward.

"That's the Guardian mark."

Tez pressed the symbol.

For several moments, nothing happened.

Then the mountain trembled.

A deep grinding sound echoed through the valley.

The stone wall slowly moved inward.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Cold air rushed out.

Naman looked at Tez.

"How did you know?"

"I didn't."

"You simply trusted the seal?"

Tez nodded.

"Perhaps it trusted me first."

They entered.

The passage descended into darkness.

Unlike the natural caves above, this tunnel had been carefully built.

The walls were smooth.

Small lamps had been carved into the stone at regular intervals.

Most were empty.

Yet some began glowing as Tez passed them.

One after another...

golden flames appeared.

No oil.

No wick.

No human hand.

The ancient passage was awakening.

Aditi whispered,

"It has been waiting."

Tez looked ahead.

"For whom?"

No one answered.

The First Memory

The deeper they went, the warmer the air became.

Then Tez saw something unusual on the wall.

A carving.

He stepped closer.

His breath caught.

It showed a village.

Houses.

Fields.

A large banyan tree.

A family standing outside a home.

Tez recognized it immediately.

Suryanagari.

His childhood home.

His mother was there.

His father stood beside her.

And a younger Tez was playing near the doorway.

Tez reached toward the carving.

"No..."

Vaidehi came beside him.

"What is it?"

"My home."

The image suddenly began to glow.

The stone seemed to soften.

The sounds of his childhood filled the tunnel.

His mother's laughter.

His father's voice.

The sound of cattle.

Children playing.

Temple bells.

The smell of freshly cooked food seemed to fill the air.

Tez closed his eyes.

For one beautiful moment, he was home again.

Then came the fire.

The sounds changed.

People screamed.

Houses burned.

His mother called his name.

His father shouted for him to run.

Tez stumbled backward.

"Stop!"

The image continued.

He saw his father fighting.

He saw flames spreading across the village.

He saw himself running.

Then...

everything disappeared.

Tez dropped to his knees.

His breathing became uneven.

Vaidehi knelt beside him.

"Tez."

He could not answer.

His hands trembled.

"I saw it again."

"The night everything was lost."

Vaidehi gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You are here."

He looked at her.

"Not there."

"Here."

Tez slowly regained control of his breathing.

He nodded.

"Thank you."

The mountain spoke again.

This time, the voice was clearer.

"The past seeks revenge."

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

"The future seeks protection."

Tez stared at the dark passage ahead.

Then came the final words.

"Choose."

The tunnel split into two paths.

On the left, golden light revealed scenes from Suryanagari.

His father.

His mother.

His lost home.

Everything he had ever wanted back.

On the right were scenes of strangers.

Children running from burning homes.

Villagers crying.

People trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

Families fleeing from attackers.

Tez understood.

This was not a normal path.

It was a test.

The Choice

Naman looked at Tez.

"You don't have to do this."

Tez stared at the left path.

His heart begged him to follow it.

What if the mountain could return his family?

What if there was a secret hidden inside these memories?

What if his parents were not truly dead?

For one terrible moment, hope defeated reason.

He stepped toward the left.

Vaidehi said nothing.

She knew this decision belonged to him.

Tez stopped.

He looked at his father's face in the glowing memory.

Then he remembered the letter.

"The past cannot be protected."

"The future can."

His father had known this moment might come.

Tez slowly turned away from Suryanagari.

"I cannot change what happened."

His voice shook.

"But I can stop it from happening to someone else."

He stepped toward the right-hand path.

The golden light exploded through the tunnel.

The memories of Suryanagari disappeared.

The mountain became silent.

Then a deep voice spoke.

"Chosen."

A hidden doorway appeared before them.

Vaidehi smiled.

"You passed."

Tez looked at her.

"We passed."

She nodded.

"Yes."

The Guardian Chamber

The doorway opened into a massive underground chamber.

Everyone stared in wonder.

Hundreds of small lamps illuminated the walls.

The ceiling rose far above them.

At the center stood a circular stone platform.

Seven symbols were carved around its edge.

One symbol was glowing.

A flame surrounded by a circle.

Vaidehi stepped closer.

"The Flame of Courage."

Tez looked at it.

"It isn't the same as the crystal we found beneath Anandpur."

"No."

"This is different."

Somesh examined the carvings.

"The sanctuary may contain a different form of the Guardian teaching."

At the far end of the chamber stood seven stone doors.

Six remained closed.

One had begun to open.

Behind it was darkness.

A cold wind flowed from the opening.

Then...

they heard footsteps.

Everyone turned.

The Black Eclipse Arrives

A group of armed men entered the chamber.

Their faces were covered.

Black symbols were painted across their clothing.

The Black Eclipse.

Bhaskar immediately drew his weapon.

"Stay together!"

The soldiers spread across the chamber.

At their center stood the same masked commander Tez had encountered beneath Anandpur.

He slowly removed his mask.

His eyes were cold.

"You have made this much easier for us."

Tez stepped forward.

"You poisoned Anandpur."

The man smiled.

"And you destroyed our work."

"You won't leave this place with the Flame."

The commander laughed.

"We don't need to."

He raised a dark object.

A broken black seal.

The Guardian chamber reacted immediately.

The golden flames flickered.

Tez's expression changed.

The commander looked directly at him.

"We only need you."

Tez tightened his grip around his Guardian Seal.

"Why?"

The man's smile disappeared.

"Because the sanctuary will open completely..."

"...only for the person carrying the true Guardian Seal."

Silence.

Then the commander gave a signal.

The Black Eclipse soldiers charged.

And the ancient chamber erupted into chaos.
